Pseudophakia retards axial elongation in neonatal monkey eyes.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the affect of removing the crystalline lens and implanting an intraocular lens on the axial elongation of a neonatal eye. METHODS: Monocular lensectomy coupled with the implantation of a monofocal or multifocal intraocular lens was performed on 21 neonatal rhesus monkeys. Fellow eyes were randomized to part-time occlusion therapy or no treatment. Longitudinal axial elongation of the pseudophakic eyes was then compared to that of the fellow eyes, to the eyes of 19 monkeys made monocularly aphakic as neonates, and to the eyes of 39 normal monkeys. RESULTS: At 5 weeks of ag

A comparative analysis of the influence of refractive error on image acuity using three eye models.

PURPOSE: To analyse and compare image acuity for different refractive errors generated by either altering axial length or corneal curvature and using three human eye models with two pupil sizes. METHODS: Three different eye models, Liou-Brennan, Goncharov and Navarro, were used. Simulations were made (using Ansys Zemax OpticStudio 22.3) for real pupil sizes of 3 and 6 mm with refractive errors ranging from -2 to +2 D in 0.25 D increments. Refractive errors were simulated by varying axial length or corneal curvature. Root mean square (RMS) values were used to determine image acuity. RESULTS:

Axial length measurements after cataract surgery in adults.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of the study was to check the difference in eye axial length before and after cataract surgery and to find out the possible correlation with refraction changes. The axial length was measured by ultrasound before and after cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation. Keratometry measurements were also performed. The study comprised 32 eyes. The mean difference in axial length was 0.53 mm. The mean difference in keratometry was 0.37 D. There was no correlation between these values. CONCLUSION: The changes in axial length are not due to corneal curve changes. P

Redefinition of high myopia: the relationship of axial length measurement to myopic pathology and its relevance to cataract surgery.

Owing to growing confusion over the true incidence of RD in HM after cataract surgery, a new definition for HM has been formulated based on measurement of axial length. Of 38 noncataractous phakic eyes with treated RD, 45% were found to have axial lengths more than 1 mm longer than would be expected from the eye's refraction. Of 180 moderate to highly myopic eyes examined 2 years after extracapsular extraction with lens implantation, 2 were found to have developed RD. Using the historic definition for HM by refraction (spectacle equivalent of -6.0 dptr or more), the incidence of RD was found t

Retinoscopic (refractive) estimation of axial length in paediatric aphakia: a comparison with ultrasonic measurement.

AIM: To compare paediatric axial length values estimated from the aphakic refraction alone with axial length values measured by ultrasound. METHODS: Retrospective institutional medical record review of paediatric aphakic patients 12 years of age and younger with documented ultrasonic axial length and objective refraction (retinoscopy) within 3 months of each other. An estimate of axial length was made from the aphakic refraction alone (with an assumed average keratometry value of 44 dioptres) for all patients. RESULTS: 149 eyes of 102 paediatric aphakic patients were identified. The ultrason

Ocular echometry in the diagnosis of congenital glaucoma.

Thirty-three eyes of 18 normal infants and children and 36 eyes of infants in whom congenital glaucoma had been diagnosed were measured by echometry. The anterior chamber depth, vitreous length, and axial length were notably greater in glaucomatous eyes, while the lens thickness was smaller in glaucomatous eyes. The axial length of normal eyes was found to increase with age. The confidence interval of the normal growth curve allows the prediction of the maximum normal axial length for any given age. In congenital glaucoma cases in which the visual fields and daily pressure curve cannot be eval

Ocular axial length in children with unilateral congenital cataract.

Ocular axial length and thickness were measured in 12 children (age 4 to 418 days, median 103 days) with unilateral congenital cataract who were referred to St. Erik's Eye Hospital during 1991-1994. The measurements were performed in both eyes with A-scan ultrasonography before cataract extraction. In 4 children measurement of the axial length was repeated 1 to 4 months after the unilateral cataract extraction. All eyes with congenital cataract were shorter than the normal fellow eye. The individual axial length differences showed a mean value +/- SEM of 1.03 +/- 0.16 mm. This difference was s

[Comparison of ultrasound and optic biometry with respect to ocular refraction after cataract surgery].

In the prospective study of 56 patients with cataract (67 eyes) the authors compared axial length biometry) regarding to postoperative refraction of the eyes. Dioptric power of the intraocular lens (IOL) was determined by SRK II. formula. The difference between predicted and actual postoperative refraction in the spherical equivalent were compared 3 months postoperatively. Axial length measured by ultrasound differed significantly from the axial length measured by optical biometry (p = 0.016). Dioptric power of IOL calculated according to the axial length measured by ultrasound was significant

Corneal diameter and axial length in congenital glaucoma.

The corneal diameter was recorded and the ocular axial length measured by A-scan ultrasonography in 31 eyes of 17 children (ages 0.05 to 7.0 years) who had undergone or were about to undergo surgery for primary congenital glaucoma. These measurements were also done in 60 normal eyes of 33 children (ages 0.20 to 9.6 years) undergoing nonophthalmic surgery. Both measures were usually greater than normal in the glaucomatous eyes. However, the corneal diameter was more sensitive than the axial length in identifying congenital glaucoma. The axial length measurement did not provide additional useful

Association Between Ocular Dominance and Anisometropic Hyperopia.

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE: Anisometropia, a relative difference in the refractive state of the two eyes, is common in hyperopic patients. We investigated the association between ocular dominance (sighting dominance) and refractive asymmetry in patients with hyperopia. METHODS: This retrospective study included 223 hyperopic patients with a mean age of 10.1 ± 3.6 years (range 3 to 21 years). Refractive error was measured with cycloplegic refraction, and axial length was measured with IOLMaster® (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA). Ocular dominance was assessed with the hole-in-the-card test. The a
