[The frequency of bacteria in human gallstones].

INTRODUCTION: Complications caused by lost gallstones within the abdominal cavity are well known. Abscesses, perforation of the gastro-intestinal tract were all described in the literature, but gallstones were found in hernial sac, or even in sputum after it penetrated through the diaphragm into the respiratory tract. These complications can develop between several weeks to several years postoperatively. Most complications can be treated surgically only. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty gallstones and bile samples were collected from 50 patients who underwent cholecystectomy (36 female / 14 male,

The Brucella pathogens are polarized bacteria.

Brucella pathogens are responsible for brucellosis, a worldwide zoonosis. They are facultative intracellular pathogens characterized by their asymmetric division and their unipolar growth. This growth modality generates poles with specialized functions (through polar recruitment of polar adhesins or of cell cycle regulators) and progeny cells with potentially different fates.

Bacteria and their toxins tamed for immunotherapy.

Bacterial toxins share the ability to enter host cells to target various intracellular proteins and to modulate host immune responses. Over the last 20 years, toxins and their mutated variants, as well as live attenuated bacteria, have been exploited for vaccination and immunotherapy of various infectious, malignant and autoimmune diseases. The ability of Bordetella pertussis adenylate cyclase toxin to translocate its adenylate cyclase domain across the host cell membrane, as well as the pathways of intracellular trafficking of Bacillus anthracis lethal and edema toxins, Shigella dysenteriae s

The role of anaerobic bacteria in bacteremia.

Anaerobic bacteria remain an important cause of bloodstream infections and account for 1-17% of positive blood cultures. This review summarizes the epidemiology, microbiology, predisposing conditions, and treatment of anaerobic bacteremia (AB) in newborns, children, adults and in patients undergoing dental procedures. The majority of AB are due to Gram-negative bacilli, mostly Bacteroides fragilis group. The other species causing AB include Peptostreptococcus, Clostridium spp., and Fusobacterium spp. Many of these infections are polymicrobial. AB in newborns is associated with prolonged labor,

Mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria.

The treatment of bacterial infections is increasingly complicated by the ability of bacteria to develop resistance to antimicrobial agents. Antimicrobial agents are often categorized according to their principal mechanism of action. Mechanisms include interference with cell wall synthesis (e.g., beta-lactams and glycopeptide agents), inhibition of protein synthesis (macrolides and tetracyclines), interference with nucleic acid synthesis (fluoroquinolones and rifampin), inhibition of a metabolic pathway (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole), and disruption of bacterial membrane structure (polymyxins

[Identification and reclassification of methylotrophic bacteria].

Species status of the already described methylotrophic bacteria has been specified, and new isolates have been identified. The bacteria under study are classified as those from Methylobacterium genus on the basis of a set of diagnostic characteristics (they are capable to assimilate, besides methanol, other organic substances; to realize serine cycle of one-carbon compounds assimilation, to form rast-coloured colonies; they can form rosy-coloured colonies). As a result of the study of phenotypical characteristics in 14 strains of Methylobacterium and sequence-analysis of the gene 16S pRNA two

The role of anaerobic bacteria in sinusitis.

The normal oropharyngeal flora contained aerobic and anaerobic bacteria that can cause respiratory infections including sinusitis. Some of these bacteria can interfere with the growth of potential pathogens and may play a role in preventing infections. Anaerobic bacteria emerge as pathogens as the infection becomes chronic. This may be the result of the selective pressure of antimicrobial agents that enable resistant anaerobic organisms to survive, and from the development over time of conditions appropriate for anaerobic growth, which include the reduction in oxygen tension and an increase in

The role of anaerobic bacteria in tonsillitis.

This review summarizes the information that supports the potential importance of anaerobic bacteria in tonsillitis. Some anaerobic bacteria possess interfering capability with Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) and other pathogens. The possible role of anaerobes in the acute inflammatory process in the tonsils is supported by several observations: anaerobes have been isolated from the cores of tonsils of patients with recurrent GABHS and non-GABHS tonsillitis (NST); the recovery of anaerobes as predominant pathogens in abscesses of tonsils, in many cases without any aerobic bacteria;

The consequences of suppression of anaerobic bacteria.

Anaerobic bacteria such as Bacteroides fragilis, Peptostreptococcus species, and Fusobacterium species, when accompanied by aerobic bacteria or in the presence of dead tissue, can cause severe infections. This article discusses the most common type of anaerobic infection, i.e., infection after colonic contamination of the abdominal cavity and soft tissues. Colonic anaerobes rarely cause infections as solitary pathogens. Mixed infections of aerobes and anaerobes are treated by source control, surgical drainage and debridement, and combination antibiotic therapy. Antimicrobial treatment should c

[Interaction of bacteria with mercuric compounds].

We investigated the interaction of mercuric compounds with the bacteria Corynebacterium ammoniagenes, Micrococcus luteus, and Mycobacterium smegmatus capable of producing hydroxylamines (R-NOH) and 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol-2,4-cyclopyrophosphate (MECP), which are prone to form free radicals. The interaction of these substances with Hg2+ ions and their dynamics during the mercuric poisoning of bacteria was studied by EPR and NMR. Under stress conditions induced by lowering pH or generation of active oxygen species, the bacteria and, especially, their mutants with enhanced sensitivity to oxidativ

Colonization of the canine skin with bacteria.

Abstract  Aspects of colonization of the canine skin with bacteria are reviewed. Owing to variability in sampling techniques, anatomical sites involved and lack of temporal studies, there is still controversy as to which bacteria are residents or transients on the canine skin. The establishment of the cutaneous flora is determined by the ability of bacteria to adhere to canine corneocytes, to use available nutrients from skin secretions and to resist challenge from competing bacteria. Variations in humidity and temperature due to environment, skin folds or differences in the haircoat are also

[Chromates: resistance and detoxification in bacteria].

Derivatives of hexavalent chromium (chromates and dichromates) are highly toxic and have been shown to be mutagens and carcinogens. These compounds are often disposed to the environment as a result of diverse industrial procedures. The presence of chromates selects bacterial strains possessing chromate resistance determinants, commonly carried by plasmids. Some bacteria are able to reduce hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium which is much less toxic. Bacterial strains combining both properties, resistance to and reduction of chromate, are potentially useful for decontamination of sewage o

Pathogenic anaerobic bacteria and the environment.

The distribution of pathogenic anaerobes in the environment and the relationship with diseases in animals are discussed. A distinction between the spore-bearing anaerobes (clostridia) and the Gram-negative non-spore-forming anaerobes is necessary. The main habitat of clostridia is the soil but they are also found in dust, sewage, rivers, lakes, sea water, milk, vegetables, fresh meat, fish, insects and the intestinal tract. The Gram-negative non-spore-forming anaerobic bacteria are also widely distributed among animals, principally on mucous membranes of the alimentary tract. After a general i

Vaginal colonization by bacteria and yeast.

A number of different factors have been found to influence the microflora of the vagina. Studies showing an increased rate of colonization associated with pregnancy, menses, oral contraceptive use, and estrogen replacement therapy illustrate the influence of hormones, glycogen content, and pH on vaginal colonization. The microorganisms found in the vagina may also be dependent on the existence of specific attachment sites, which may differ in the various areas of the vagina. Vaginal colonization appears to be altered in patients with diabetes mellitus, those receiving steroid therapy, and immu

The role of bacteria in periodontal diseases.

The dental literature contains ample scientific data supporting the concept that periodontal diseases are infectious diseases. The formation of plaque on and around the teeth represents a massive accumulation of bacteria that are usually present in the oral cavity. This bacterial colonization is relatively independent of food intake, degree of salivation, mastication, or malocclusion.Although experimental studies have not defined the group of bacteria or a specific pathogen that is responsible for chronic gingivitis, it is known that the suppression of plaque is consistent with dental and peri
