Postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder and behavioral insomnia in children: A Co-occurrence analysis and new research perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The Cognitive and Emotional Model of Young Children's Insomnia (CEMYCI) associates parental psychopathology with childhood sleep disorders. However, postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PP-PTSD) related to birth-related trauma has been little studied in this context. OBJECTIVE: To examine the co-occurrence between maternal PP-PTSD and behavioral insomnia in children aged 6 to 48 months. METHODS: A preliminary cross-sectional study included 674 mother-child dyads. PP-PTSD was assessed using the PCL-S scale and behavioral insomnia using the DIMS subscale of the SDSC. Analyses

Mechanistic research on the vestibular-hippocampal pathway in neurodegenerative diseases: an integrative perspective from molecular to behavioral levels.

This paper systematically reviews the pivotal role and bidirectional regulatory mechanisms of the Vestibular-hippocampal pathway in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer's disease), focusing on the common comorbidity of vestibular dysfunction and cognitive decline. Evidence spanning molecular to behavioral levels indicates that vestibular signal loss can induce hippocampal atrophy and spatial memory impairment through neuroinflammation, impaired synaptic plasticity, and disrupted theta rhythms. Conversely, hippocampal degeneration further impairs vestibular

Research Note: Effects of environmental sound stimulus on behavioral responses, cortisol levels, and horizontal immunity of transferred pullets.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of prolonged exposure to varying levels of music or noise on the behavioral, physiological, and immune responses of pullets following their transfer to an egg-laying facility. A total of 240 one-day-old Hy-Line Brown pullets were randomly assigned to five groups: 0 dB sound stimulation, low-decibel music (65-75 dB), high-decibel music (85-95 dB), low-decibel noise (65-75 dB), and high-decibel noise (85-95 dB) stimuli. Pullets received music or noise stimuli 10 h per d from 1-day-old to 16-wk-old and were then transferred to the egg-laying fa

How transparent is behavioral intervention research on pathological gambling and other gambling-related disorders? A systematic literature review.

AIMS: To review the transparency of reports of behavioral interventions for pathological gambling and other gambling-related disorders. METHODS: We used the Transparent Reporting of Evaluations with Nonrandomized Designs (TREND) Statement to develop the 59-question adapted TREND questionnaire (ATQ). Each ATQ question corresponds to a transparency guideline and asks how clearly a study reports its objectives, research design, analytical methods and conclusions. A subset of 23 ATQ questions is considered particularly important. We searched PubMed, PsychINFO and Web of Science to identify experi

Principles for defining adverse events in behavioral intervention research: lessons from a family-focused adolescent drug abuse trial.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral intervention research has lagged behind biomedical research in developing principles for defining, categorizing, identifying, reporting, and monitoring adverse events and unanticipated problems. PURPOSE: In this article we present a set of principles for defining adverse events and how they were applied in a large national multi-site family therapy study for substance-using adolescents, The Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) Effectiveness Study. METHODS: The BSFT Effectiveness study tested how BSFT compares to Treatment as Usual (TAU) for the treatment of drug-abusi

Rumination and vomiting in the developmentally disabled: a critical review of the behavioral, medical, and psychiatric treatment research.

Medical and psychiatric research regarding the treatment of vomiting and rumination among developmentally disabled individuals was selectively reviewed. Because of serious methodological flaws which pervade the psychiatric literature, claims for the effectiveness of psychiatric interventions for vomiting and rumination cannot be justified. Medical interventions (e.g., pharmacological and surgical interventions) were found to be effective when rumination was attributable to a specific organic pathology. In the absence of identified organic pathology for rumination, medical interventions are of

Older adults' compliance with mobile ecological momentary assessments in behavioral nutrition and physical activity research: pooled results of four intensive longitudinal studies and recommendations for future research.

BACKGROUND: Mobile Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is increasingly used to gather intensive, longitudinal data on behavioral nutrition, physical activity and sedentary behavior and their underlying determinants. However, a relevant concern is the risk of non-random non-compliance with mobile EMA protocols, especially in older adults. This study aimed to examine older adults' compliance with mobile EMA in health behavior studies according to participant characteristics, and prompt timing, and to provide recommendations for future EMA research. METHODS: Data of four intensive longitudinal

Determinants of health-seeking behavior of people on institutional delivery: evidence from qualitative research.

BACKGROUND: Institutional delivery is an evidence-based option that substantially reduces risks to mothers and newborns. However, the existing literature provides an incomplete account of the determinants that influence individuals' choices about institutional delivery. This study explores the determinants (facilitators, barriers) of health-seeking behavior for institutional delivery in Nepal. METHODS: This study employed a focused ethnographic design, which allowed for an in-depth understanding of participants lived experiences in relation to health seeking behavior to institutional delivery

Gaze behavior during walking in older adults: A systematic review of eye-tracking research.

OBJECTIVE: Visual information is highly important for walking, a complex skill involving coordination of sensory, cognitive, and motor systems. Older adults exhibit changes in visual processing and eye movements, as well as gait. However, only recently has measuring eye movements during walking been widely accessible with wearable eye trackers. The objective of this review is to evaluate eye tracking metrics that can be collected during walking tasks and eye movements associated with walking in older adults. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search to identify eligible studies examining eye

[Application of motor behavior evaluation method of zebrafish model in traditional Chinese medicine research].

The zebrafish model has attracted much attention due to its strong reproductive ability, short research cycle, and ease of maintenance. It has always been an important vertebrate model system, often used to carry out human disease research. Its motor behavior features have the advantages of being simpler, more intuitive, and quantifiable. In recent years, it has received widespread attention in the study of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)for the treatment of sleep disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, fatigue, epilepsy, and other diseases. This paper reviews the characteristics of zebrafish

Research note: Individual variability in early-life play and social behaviors of broiler chicks.

Play and social behaviors are important in behavioral development as they support neurodevelopment, social bonding, and skills development. The individual differences in performance of these behaviors in poultry are currently unknown. This study assessed individual variability of play and social behaviors in broiler chicks across the first week of life. Seventy-five chicks (25 birds/pen) were randomly placed in three pens. Continuous focal sampling of nine birds (3 chicks/pen; labeled A-I) was performed from D 1-7. The play behaviors assessed were sparring, frolicking, and worm-running, and al

Aligning Health Promotion Principles With Health Behavior Practice: Experiences With Qualitative Tuberculosis Research.

Although health promotion scholars encourage researchers in the field to adopt a broad definition of health and a wide lens on the factors which shape it, critics have noted that health promotion research continues to be focused downstream on individual health behavior, downplaying the powerful role of structural determinants. We argue that increased use of qualitative approaches in health promotion could support the shift away from clinically defined disease and towards health promotion practices which advance community well-being and empowerment. We focus on three overlapping tensions, namel

Researcher Views on Changes in Personality, Mood, and Behavior in Next-Generation Deep Brain Stimulation.

The literature on deep brain stimulation (DBS) and adaptive DBS (aDBS) raises concerns that these technologies may affect personality, mood, and behavior. We conducted semi-structured interviews with researchers (n = 23) involved in developing next-generation DBS systems, exploring their perspectives on ethics and policy topics including whether DBS/aDBS can cause such changes. The majority of researchers reported being aware of personality, mood, or behavioral (PMB) changes in recipients of DBS/aDBS. Researchers offered varying estimates of the frequency of PMB changes. A smaller majority rep

Developing an Online Tool to Promote Safe Sun Behaviors With Young Teenagers as Co-researchers.

Despite education about the risks of excessive sun exposure, teenagers in Australia are sun-seeking, with sunburn common in summer. Conversely, some regular (time-limited) exposure to sunlight (that avoids sunburn) is necessary for vitamin D and healthy bones and other molecules important for immune and metabolic health. New interventions are thus required to better support teenagers to make healthy and balanced decisions about their sun behaviors. This paper describes the development of a prototype online tool-a smartphone app-that aimed to foster safe sun practices in teenagers. We recruited

Hypercortisolemia and Depressive-like Behaviors in a Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta) Involved in Visual Research.

A 10-y-old cranially implanted rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) involved in visual research was presented for dull mentation and weight loss. Physical examination revealed alopecia and poor body conditioning, and bloodwork revealed marked hypercortisolemia (23 μg/dL). Differential diagnoses for hypercortisolemia, weight loss, and alopecia included Cushing and pseudo-Cushing syndromes. To further evaluate hypercortisolemia, we compared the urine cortisol:creatinine ratio (UCCR) at baseline and after low-dose dexamethasone suppression (LDDS) testing in the presenting animal and healthy naïve and

The dysregulated cluster in personality profiling research: longitudinal stability and associations with bulimic behaviors and correlates.

Among cluster analytic studies of the personality profiles associated with bulimia nervosa, a group of individuals characterized by emotional lability and behavioral dysregulation (i.e., a dysregulated cluster) has emerged most consistently. However, previous studies have all been cross-sectional and mostly used clinical samples. This study aimed to replicate associations between the dysregulated personality cluster and bulimic symptoms and related characteristics using a longitudinal, population-based sample. Participants were females assessed at ages 17 and 25 from the Minnesota Twin Family

Extremely frequent behavior in consumer research: theory and empirical evidence for chronic casino gambling.

The present study informs understanding of customer segmentation strategies by extending Twedt's heavy-half propositions to include a segment of users that represent less than 2% of all households-consumers demonstrating extremely frequent behavior (EFB). Extremely frequent behavior (EFB) theory provides testable propositions relating to the observation that few (2%) consumers in many product and service categories constitute more than 25% of the frequency of product or service use. Using casino gambling as an example for testing EFB theory, an analysis of national survey data shows that extre

Research Review: 'Ain't misbehavin': Towards a developmentally-specified nosology for preschool disruptive behavior.

There is increasing consensus that disruptive behavior disorders and syndromes (DBDs) are identifiable in preschool children. There is also concomitant recognition of the limitations of the current DBD nosology for distinguishing disruptive behavior symptoms from the normative misbehavior of early childhood. In particular, there appears to be substantial insensitivity to heterotypic manifestations of this developmental period and problems in identifying meaningful heterogeneity. As a result, the developmental basis for much of the current nosology may be called into question. To address these

Multivariate evaluation of health attitudes and behaviors: development and validation of a method for health promotion research.

Many self-reported measures of health status, attitudes, and knowledge used by clinicians and researchers suffer from a variety of shortcomings, including limited empirical justification, excessive complexity, assessments of nonmodifiable historic or hereditary factors, and limited utility for public health program planning. The Health Attitudes and Behavior Scale is an instrument designed to overcome many of these shortcomings and direct public health professionals toward more efficacious interventions. One hundred sixty-four subjects responded to true-false and Likert scale items related to
