This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of postoperative acupressure in the recovery of the gastrointestinal system (GIS) after caesarean section. A total of 160 primipara pregnant women delivered by caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia were randomised into four groups: group 1 (those who received acupressure), group 2 (coffee was provided three times a day), group 3 (chewed sugar-free gum for 15 min with an interval of 4 h from the second postoperative hour), and group 4 (control group). The first gas outflow and defaecation times of the women were compared among the groups. The fi

Background Postoperative ileus (POI) is a common complication following emergency laparotomy for gastroduodenal perforation and is associated with delayed recovery, prolonged hospital stay, and increased postoperative morbidity. Chewing gum acts as a form of sham feeding and may stimulate gastrointestinal motility through cephalic-vagal stimulation. Although its benefits have been demonstrated in elective abdominal surgeries, evidence regarding its role in emergency perforation surgeries remains limited. Methods This prospective comparative study was conducted in the Department of General Surg

BACKGROUND: Capsule endoscopy (CE) fails to reach the caecum in approximately 20% of patients. Data suggest that chewing-gum, simulating sham feeding, provokes the cephalic phase of gastrointestinal (GI) motor response and may increase GI motility.
AIM: To determine whether chewing-gum increases the ability of CE reaching the caecum.
METHODS: Prospective, randomized, single-blinded controlled trial. Ninety-three consecutive patients were randomized either to use chewing-gum (n = 47) or not (n = 46). All patients received the identical bowel preparation. Patients chewed one piece of gum for a

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Constipated patients have higher risk of poor bowel preparation and suffer from dysfunction of the intestinal motor. Chewing gum can stimulate gut motility and enhanced instructions can improve the quality of bowel preparation. The objective of this study was to investigate whether chewing gum combined with WeChat-enhanced instruction can increase the quality of bowel preparation in constipated patients.
METHODS: This was a single-center, endoscopist-blinded, randomized-controlled trial. Patients were assigned (1:1) to the chewing gum and WeChat-enhanced instruction (CGW)

IMPORTANCE: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are often used by smokers as an aid to stopping smoking, but evidence is limited regarding their efficacy compared with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), and no evidence is available on how their efficacy compares with that of varenicline.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether ECs are superior to NRT and noninferior to varenicline in helping smokers quit.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a randomized clinical trial conducted at 7 sites in China and including participants who were smoking at least 10 cigarettes per day and motivated to quit, not u

AIM: Elderly individuals face the risk of reductions in saliva secretion and occlusal force caused by systemic diseases or medications that can eventually result in malnutrition and systemic complications. We tested the hypothesis that regular gum chewing exercises (GCE) would enhance saliva secretion and occlusal force in an elderly population.
METHODS: A total of 12 community-dwelling elderly individuals (3 men and 9 women) participated in this study after providing informed consent. Participants carried out GCE regimens using a soft gum (GCE-S) or hard gum (GCE-H) for 2 weeks each, with a

Previous studies demonstrated that the chewing of a 2.5% (mass fraction) alpha-tricalcium-phosphate-fortified (alpha-TCP) experimental chewing gum released sufficient calcium and phosphate to eliminate any fall in the tooth mineral saturation of plaque fluid after a sucrose rinse (Vogel et al., 1998). In contrast, the chewing of a conventional sugar-free gum did not eliminate this decrease in saturation. The purpose of this study was to examine if the release of ions from plaque calcium-phosphate pools induced by this gum could provide protection during subsequent exposure to cariogenic condit

BACKGROUND: Prolonged post-operative ileus is associated with increased risk of other complications, length of hospital stays and health care related costs. Chewing gum has been shown to reduce duration of ileus in many elective surgeries, but there is a paucity of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on its effect on duration of ileus among patients undergoing emergency surgery, specifically patients with peritonitis. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of chewing gum on duration of postoperative ileus following laparotomy for gastroduodenal perforations.
METHODS: This will be a

BACKGROUND: Postoperative ileus has long been considered an inevitable consequence of gastrointestinal surgery. It prolongs hospital stay, increases morbidity, and adds to treatment costs. Chewing is a form of sham feeding reported to stimulate bowel motility. This analysis examines the value of chewing-gum therapy in treatment of postoperative ileus.
METHODS: A search for randomized, controlled trials studying elective gastrointestinal surgery was undertaken using MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, and reference lists. Outcomes were extracted including time to first flatus

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is an infectious disease with predominantly of cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans (S mutans). Xylitol is considered as one of the effective agents that can limit this dental infection. In this randomised, placebo-controlled trial, we aimed to evaluate the potential reflection of short-term xylitol consumption on pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8) and S mutans counts by ELISA and qPCR (Quantitative real-time PCR), respectively.
METHODS: In this study, 154 participants were assigned to two groups, control and xylitol. Dental examination,

BACKGROUND: Postoperative paralytic ileus is not a rare complication after lumbar spinal surgery especially in elderly patients. Chewing is a kind of sham feeding that has been reported to stimulate bowel motility, but so far there was no study showed these positive results may or may not be extrapolated to the spinal surgery population. We sought to determine whether chewing gum facilitates bowel function recovery in elderly patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery.
METHODS: Sixty consecutive elderly patients (over 60 years old) with lumbar degenerative diseases undergoing posterior lumbar f

The aim of this clinical study was to investigate the acid resistance of enamel lesions remineralized in situ by a sugar-free chewing gum containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate nanocomplexes (CPP-ACP: Recaldent). The study utilized a double-blind, randomized, crossover design with two treatments: (i) sugar-free gum containing 18.8 mg of CPP-ACP, and (ii) sugar-free gum not containing CPP-ACP as control. Subjects wore removable palatal appliances with insets of human enamel containing demineralized subsurface lesions and chewed the gum for 20 min 4 times per day for 14 day

BACKGROUND: Caffeine, widely used as an ergogenic aid, has been extensively studied regarding its dosage and timing of ingestion. However, the impact of different administration methods on caffeine's performance-enhancing effects remains relatively underexplored. This study compared the effects of caffeine administered via chewing gum versus capsules on maximal strength, muscular power, and side effects during bench press and back squat exercises.
METHODS: Sixteen resistance-trained males participated in a double-blind, randomized trial, ingesting either a 4 mg/kg caffeine capsule (CC) or pla
