The impact of personal and outdoor temperature exposure during cold and warm seasons on lung function and respiratory symptoms in COPD.

RATIONALE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients often report aggravated symptoms due to heat and cold, but few studies have formally evaluated this. METHODOLOGY: We followed 30 Boston-based former smokers with COPD for four non-consecutive 30-day periods over 12 months. Personal and outdoor temperature exposure were measured using portable and Boston-area outdoor stationary monitors. Participants recorded daily morning lung function measurements as well as any worsening breathing (breathlessness, chest tightness, wheeze) and bronchitis symptoms (cough, sputum colour and amoun

Balsam fir (Abies balsamea) needles and their essential oil kill overwintering ticks (Ixodes scapularis) at cold temperatures.

The blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, vectors Borrelia burgdorferi, a bacterium that causes Lyme Disease. Although synthetic pesticides can reduce tick numbers, there are concerns about their potential effects on beneficial insects, such as pollinators. Plant-based pest control agents such as essential oils could provide an alternative because they have low environmental persistency; however, these products struggle to provide effective control. We found a new natural acaricide, balsam fir (Abies balsamea) needles, that kill overwintering I. scapularis ticks. We extracted the essential oil

Predictive modeling for growth of non- and cold-adapted Listeria monocytogenes on fresh-cut cantaloupe at different storage temperatures.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to determine the growth kinetics of Listeria monocytogenes, with and without cold-adaption, on fresh-cut cantaloupe under different storage temperatures. Fresh-cut samples, spot inoculated with a 4-strain cocktail of L. monocytogenes (∼3.2 log CFU/g), were exposed to constant storage temperatures held at 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 °C. All growth curves of L. monocytogenes were fitted to the Baranyi, modified Gompertz, and Huang models. Regardless of conditions under which cells grew, the time needed to reach 5 log CFU/g decreased with the elevated storage tempe

Is cold the new hot in sudden unexpected death in epilepsy? Effect of low temperature on heart rate of rats with epilepsy.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the commonest cause of seizure-related mortality in people with refractory epilepsy. Several risk factors for SUDEP are described; however, the importance of including low temperatures as risk factor for SUDEP was never explored. Based on this, the aim of this study was to evaluate the heart rate of rats with epilepsy during low temperature exposure. Our results showed that low temperature clearly increased the heart rate of rats with epilepsy. Taken together, we concluded that exposure to low temperatures could be considered important risk factor

Cold-induced anthocyanin regulation in horticultural crops: mechanistic basis, trade-offs, and decision-driven temperature management in plant factories.

With the expansion of modern horticultural production systems, anthocyanins have attracted increasing attention for their dual role in imparting vibrant coloration and delivering health-promoting benefits. Preharvest temperature management, particularly controlled low-temperature exposure, has emerged as an effective strategy to enhance anthocyanin accumulation in horticultural crops. Despite extensive molecular insights, decision-driven temperature management (DDTM) frameworks that integrate species-, genotype-, and operational parameter-specific strategies for plant factory applications rema

Cold-Water Immersion Impairs Power Earlier than Strength Through Time-Dependent Reductions in Intramuscular Temperature in Human Dorsiflexor Muscles.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to investigate the time- and intramuscular temperature-dependent changes in neuromuscular function throughout 1 h of cold-water immersion (CWI) at 10°C. It was hypothesized that acute CWI (<30 min) would not affect neuromuscular function due to limited reductions in intramuscular temperature, whereas prolonged CWI (>30 min) would impair muscle contractility by drastically reducing intramuscular temperature. METHODS: Twelve healthy participants (nine males and three females) partook in a randomized crossover design study involving 1-h CWI at 10°C of their lower leg, with

The role of stem respiration in cold-acclimation of winter-dormant Quercus robur trees under large air temperature fluctuations.

Cold acclimation of leaf respiration often increases respiration rates at a given temperature after temperature declines. Whether a similar response occurs in stems and contributes to frost tolerance remains unknown. We evaluated stem CO2 efflux (Es) and cold acclimation in dormant Quercus robur trees in a climate chamber with day/night air temperatures progressively decreasing week-by-week from 20/10 °C to 5/-10 °C and then progressively increasing back to 20/10 °C over 9 weeks. Cold hardening was evidenced by lower cell damage at sub-freezing temperatures compared with trees kept in a greenh

CORE™ wearable sensor: Comparison against gastrointestinal temperature during cold water ingestion and a 5 km running time-trial.

Five km running time-trials (TT) are associated with rapid and significant increases in core body temperature (TC). For such races, real-time feedback from pre-exercise and exercise TC may be helpful in the design of an optimal pacing strategy aimed at limiting the possibility of developing heat-related illnesses. This study compared measurements of TC obtained with a wearable device, the CORE™, to those of a gastrointestinal pill (GI pill), during cold water ingestion and a 5 km running TT. Twelve participants (25 ± 4 yrs) ingested 7.5 mL/kg fat-free mass of 4 °C water over the first 5 min of

Tokishakuyakusan ameliorates lowered body temperature after immersion in cold water through the early recovery of blood flow in rats.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: 'Cold feeling' is a subjective feeling of unusual coldness that aggravates fatigue, stiffness, and other symptoms, thereby reducing quality of life. Tokishakuyakusan (TSS) is a Kampo medicine reported to improve cold feeling and is used to treat symptoms aggravated by cold feeling. However, the mechanism of action of TSS is unclear. Cold feeling may involve reduced blood flow and subsequent inhibition of heat transport. Therefore, elucidating the effects of TSS on blood flow is one of the most important research topics for clarifying the mechanism of action of T

Feasibility Study of a Novel High-Flow Cold Air Cooling Protocol of the Porcine Brain Using MRI Temperature Mapping.

Early, prehospital cooling seeks to reduce and control the body temperature as early as possible to protect the brain and improve patient outcome in cardiac arrest, stroke, and traumatic brain injury. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of localized cooling of the porcine brain by using a novel high-flow cold air protocol, which utilizes the close proximity between the nasal cavity and the brain. Five adult pigs were anesthetized and temperature change was mapped before, during, and after cooling by using the proton resonance frequency method on a 3 T Siemens Magnetom Skyra system. C

Minor Decrease of Core Temperature in Shivering Volunteers Over a 3-Hour Exposure to Cold, Wet, and Windy Conditions.

ObjectiveHypothermia increases mortality among trauma patients. It is difficult to identify hypothermia in conscious patients due to the limited availability of diagnostic equipment yielding accurate measurements. Shivering is a symptom associated with hypothermia, and it serves as a parameter for clinical staging of hypothermia. Because shivering is part of the body's response to counteract hypothermia, the resulting thermogenic effect and expected cooling rates in shivering individuals warrant further investigation. This study aimed to describe core temperature trajectories in a setting of c

Physiological disorders in cold-stored 'Autumn Sense' hardy kiwifruit depend on the storage temperature and the modulation of targeted metabolites.

This study aimed to elucidate the effects of storage temperature on various fruit quality attributes, physiological disorders, and associated metabolites in the 0.5, 3, or 10 °C stored hardy kiwifruit. Peel pitting, which was highest in the 0.5 °C stored fruit, was identified as a chilling injury symptom of hardy kiwifruit. Proline and branched-chain amino acid contents showed higher values at 0.5 °C stored fruit as chilling responses. On the other hand, fruit shriveling and decay were highest in the 10 °C after 5 weeks of storage. The 10 °C storage induced fruit ripening during 3 weeks, but f

Hemolytic disease and reticulocytopenia of the newborn attributable to maternal immunoglobulin G anti-M reacting optimally at cold temperatures.

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) attributable to anti-M is rare, although case reports implicate anti-M in varying severities of HDFN, including fetal hydrops and intrauterine death. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the case of a newborn with HDFN associated with an atypical immunoglobulin (Ig) G anti-M that reacted best at cold temperatures. The maternal antibody detected in pregnancy was not reactive at 37°C, and a direct antiglobulin test (DAT) on red blood cells (RBCs) from the newborn was negative, suggesting an anti-M that should not have been clinically releva

The Expression of the Cold Shock Protein RNA Binding Motif Protein 3 is Transcriptionally Responsive to Organ Temperature in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Mild hypothermia, i.e. maintenance of organ temperature by up to 8°C lower than body temperature, is a critical strategy for exerting some functions of the cells and organs normally, and is an useful therapy for recovering properly from some diseases, including myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest, brain injury, and ischemic stroke. Nevertheless, there were no focusses so far on organ temperature and potential responses of gene expression to organ temperature in organs of homeothermic animals that survive under normal conditions. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to assess organ

Combined stimuli of cold, hypoxia, and dehydration status on body temperature in rats: a pilot study with practical implications for humans.

OBJECTIVE: As human thermoregulatory responses to maintain core body temperature (Tcore) under multiple stressors such as cold, hypoxia, and dehydration (e.g., exposure to high-altitude) are varied, the combined effects of cold, hypoxia, and dehydration status on Tcore in rats were investigated. The following environmental conditions were constructed: (1) thermoneutral (24 °C) or cold (10 °C), (2) normoxia (21% O2) or hypoxia (12% O2), and (3) euhydration or dehydration (48 h water deprivation), resulted in eight environmental conditions [2 ambient temperatures (Ta) × 2 oxygen levels × 2 hydra

Temperature thresholds in assessment of the clinical course of acquired cold contact urticaria: a prospective observational one-year study.

Cold contact urticaria is the second most common subtype of physical urticaria. Cold stimulation standardized tests are mandatory to confirm the diagnosis. The aim of this study is to define the utility of determining thresholds (critical time and temperature) in assessment of the clinical course of typical acquired cold contact urticaria. Nineteen adult patients (10 women and 9 men; mean age 45 years) were included in the study and the diagnosis was confirmed with the ice-cube test and TempTest 3.0. Patients were treated continuously for 1 year with 20 mg/day rupatadine (anti-H1). Thresholds
