Working in a nursing home leads to specific problems for caregivers. For example, being confronted with an ageing body and a declining mind or enduring inadequate work organisations can cause occupational exhaustion and burnout. The quest for job satisfaction at work then becomes a challenge.

BACKGROUND: Practitioners working with clients who have experienced trauma are vulnerable to experiencing both vicarious trauma and vicarious posttraumatic growth (PTG). A survey was conducted in which treatment providers who work with adults seeking help for substance abuse were asked about their experience of vicarious trauma and vicarious PTG. It was hypothesized that vicarious trauma and vicarious PTG would be positively associated with each other, that personal history of trauma and years of working with clients who had experienced trauma would be positively associated with vicarious trau

BACKGROUND: The work of midwives is emotionally challenging. Midwives share moments of joy, when a baby is born, and attend complex events of loss and trauma. Exposure to childbirth complications, emergencies, and loss can affect their professional quality of life and functioning. This aspect of midwives' practice has not been sufficiently researched.
AIM: To examine the associations between exposures to traumatic events, post-traumatic symptoms, and personal resilience with professional quality of life and organizational commitment among hospital midwives.
METHODS: Participants in this cros

BACKGROUND: Nurses have frequent interactions with traumatized individuals and may develop secondary traumatic stress (STS). Similarly, nursing students are at risk for STS development while completing clinical training.
PURPOSE: To critique and synthesize available research on the prevalence, severity, and experience of STS and its associated factors in prelicensure nursing students.
METHODS: The Whittemore and Knafl integrative review methodology was used to perform structured searches of 6 electronic databases.
RESULTS: Twenty-five studies met the inclusion criteria. Findings revealed a

Direct support professionals (DSPs) are deemed by existing literature as vital support to persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). They may be exposed to the traumatic experiences of people with IDD with potential psychological implications. Secondary traumatic stress (STS) has been studied among related professionals across human services, but little is known among DSPs. The current study examines the prevalence of STS in a sample of DSPs. The results suggested that DSPs are exposed to traumatic experiences, and exposure to a greater number of traumatized clients is sign

BACKGROUND: Resilience may protect against the negative consequences of psychologically challenging occupational exposures in firefighters. There is a limited understanding of how firefighter resilience may differ from civilians and contextual factors, which may influence firefighter resilience.
AIMS: Determine differences in resilience between firefighters and civilians and to identify contextual factors affecting firefighter resilience.
METHODS: This cross-sectional examination included career firefighters and civilians not in emergency or care service occupations. Participants completed t

In addition to traditional first responders such as police, firefighters, and paramedics, there are many other workers who carry an occupational responsibility to respond to trauma. Such professions include but are not limited to correctional officers, frontline homeless shelter staff and security, harm reduction and supervised consumption site workers, and search and rescue teams. Research has demonstrated that individuals in these professions experience similar trauma-responses to first responders, albeit often without the same support and safeguards. The study described in this protocol pap

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic pain management presents significant emotional challenges for clinicians due to the complex and prolonged nature of the conditions they treat. This editorial aims to explore how emotional stressors, such as compassion fatigue, emotional labor, and ethical dilemmas, impact both clinician well-being and patient outcomes. It also emphasizes the need for effective strategies to address clinician stress and enhance overall care quality.
RECENT FINDINGS: Healthcare professionals working in chronic pain management are particularly susceptible to emotional stress, which can

Poor wellbeing and burnout are significant issues among health-care professionals (HCPs) and may contribute to unsafe practice. In this exploratory study, we aimed to: provide the first investigation of the combined and unique influences of these psychological factors in predicting safe practice; confirm the role played by mindfulness in relation to wellbeing, burnout and safe practice; and investigate whether values and self-compassion predict additional variability above and beyond mindfulness skills. Ninety-eight NHS staff completed measures of wellbeing, burnout, perceived safety of practi

OBJECTIVE: Compassion is widely regarded as an important component of high-quality healthcare. However, its conceptualization, use, and associated outcomes in the care of people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) have not been synthesized. The aim of this review is to scope the peer reviewed academic literature on the conceptualization, use, and outcomes associated with compassion in the care of PwMS.
METHODS: Studies were eligible for inclusion if reporting primary research data from quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods studies on the conceptualization, use, and outcomes associated with c

Experiencing meaning and fulfillment in healthcare work is recognized as important for those in nursing, medicine, respiratory therapy, social work, and other health disciplines. Critically, moral distress, compassion fatigue, staff burnout, and individual health have all been linked as related phenomena when such experiences are compromised. And yet, we may question whether we truly understand the meaning of meaningfulness and fulfillment. What calls health providers to come to work, again and again, despite the complex and difficult situations that they have to deal with? What are sources of

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to examine the perceptions and experiences of family members of emergency first responders (EFRs) with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
INTRODUCTION: Research indicates that rates of PTSD in EFRs are approximately double civilian rates; however, little is known about the resultant effects on their family members. This review identifies the qualitative literature and data examining the perceptions and experiences of families with a current or former EFR family member with diagnosed or undiagnosed PTSD.

Secondary traumatic stress (STS) has been studied in therapists, spouses, and mainly in children of traumatised individuals. To date, the relationship between children's posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and their parents' mental health outcomes have been understudied, and specifically, long term STS symptoms of parents of war veterans were not investigated. The current study examined PTSD symptoms among veterans of the 2014 Israel-Gaza war and STS among their parents, five years after the war. The control group consisted of veterans from combat military units who were on active du

INTRODUCTION: The psychological impact of treating individuals who have undergone severely traumatic experiences is known as secondary traumatic stress (STS). It has been well characterized by mental health therapists and social workers. Analysis of STS in surgeons and medical students is limited to merely a handful of studies, with only 1 paper describing STS in trauma surgeons and two describing STS in medical students. This review aims to provide a comprehensive account of existing work on STS, identify gaps in knowledge of STS in surgeons and medical students, and distinguish STS from othe

BACKGROUND: Maternity services have limited formalised guidance on planning new services such as midwifery group practice for vulnerable women, for example women with a history of substance abuse (alcohol, tobacco and other drugs), mental health challenges, complex social issues or other vulnerability. Continuity of care through midwifery group practice is mostly restricted to women with low-risk pregnancies and is not universally available to vulnerable women, despite evidence supporting benefits of this model of care for all women. The perception that midwifery group practice for vulnerable

The present study examined the intergenerational transmission of the Holocaust trauma in relation to levels of secondary traumatization and event centrality across three generations in a cross-sectional survey. Participants included 92 Holocaust survivor-offspring-grandchild triads (Holocaust G1-G2-G3) and 67 comparison triads (Comparison G1-G2-G3). Holocaust G1 reported higher levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms relative to Comparison G1. Holocaust G2 and G3 reported significantly higher secondary traumatization relative to Comparison G2 and G3, respectively. Holocaust G3

The extant literature has illustrated that protective service workers experience negative repercussions associated with their job (including the development of secondary traumatic stress; STS) and may utilize maladaptive coping mechanisms. Developing an improved understanding of factors that might explain the relationship between STS and the utilization of maladaptive coping mechanisms is warranted. This study sought to examine emotion regulation and distress tolerance as potential mediators between STS and the utilization of maladaptive coping mechanisms. Participants were 152 elder protectiv
