BACKGROUND: Although three quarters of reproductive-age women see a health provider annually, less than half receive recommended contraceptive counseling services. We sought to explore providers' perspectives on the challenges to contraceptive counseling in primary care clinics to develop strategies to improve counseling services.
METHODS: A qualitative, focus group (n = 8) study was conducted in November and December 2007; 48 of 90 providers practicing in four primary care clinics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center participated. Providers included physicians, nurses, and pharmaci

BACKGROUND: Islamic beliefs are associated with decreased contraceptive use compared to other religions, and Muslim women's contraceptive needs are often unmet. Research is needed to provide an in-depth understanding of the complex set of barriers to Muslim women's contraceptive use. Therefore, we aimed to explore Muslim women's awareness and experiences with family planning in Saudi Arabia and investigate barriers to contraceptive use and access to family planning.
METHODS: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with women in a public hospital, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between

Each year approximately 7 % of women experience hypertensive disorders during pregnancy which can result in adverse events for both the mother and child. Previous research suggests that contraception at the time of conception can also predispose one to hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. The objective of this study was to examine the association between contraceptive use at the time of conception and hypertensive complications during pregnancy. A total of 2,395 women aged 18-45 years participated in the 2007-2009 Michigan Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System. Contraception at the t

Because contraception affects not only the risk of unplanned pregnancy but also that of sexually transmitted infections, the choice of particular methods is important to future fertility. However, certain trade-offs are necessary. Contraceptives with the best record of preventing pregnancy provide little protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Conversely, those barrier methods with higher failure rates for pregnancy can reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting an STD. For example, condoms used correctly and consistently provide the best protection against infection. Althou

The COVID-19 pandemic in the United States caused disruptions in care seeking and delivery during the spring of 2020, including for contraceptive care. We examined how some individuals experienced and responded to barriers to accessing contraceptive care by conducting a content analysis of relevant Reddit posts. We collected 2666 posts by scraping relevant subreddits from February 1, 2020, to April 15, 2020, and filtering by selected keywords. Among the 101 posts on contraception and the COVID-19 pandemic, we explored three main themes: barriers to accessing general healthcare during the early

OBJECTIVES: To assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of general practitioners in New South Wales regarding the provision of emergency contraception.
DESIGN: Randomised group comparison of 100 rural and 100 urban general practitioners (GPs) by questionnaire.
RESULTS: Eighty-four rural and 76 urban GPs responded. More rural GPs were knowledgeable about emergency contraception than urban GPs (95% v. 78%), and more women knew about it than men. More urban GPs frequently prescribed emergency contraception than rural GPs (26% v. 6%) and female GPs prescribed it more readily than male GPs (

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and reproductive health care should empower and enable all individuals to have a sex life that is as safe and pleasurable as possible. Achievement of this goal for adolescents is often impeded by regional and sociocultural barriers.
OBJECTIVES: To review global barriers to provision of effective counselling and care of adolescents seeking advice on contraception and sexual and reproductive health and identify elements of best practice that can be adapted to meet their needs at regional level.
METHODS: Experts with clinical experience and a scholarly background in the pro

INTRODUCTION: Avoiding unintended pregnancies is important for the health of adolescents living with HIV and has the additional benefit of preventing potential vertical HIV transmission. Health facility providers represent an untapped resource in understanding the barriers and facilitators adolescents living with HIV face when accessing contraception. By understanding these barriers and facilitators to contraceptive use among adolescent females living with HIV, this study aimed to understand how best to promote contraception within this marginalized population.

The majority of adolescents initiate sexual activity during their teenage years, making contraception an important aspect of routine adolescent health care. Despite common misperceptions, all available methods of reversible contraception are appropriate for adolescent use. Contraceptive side effects profiles and barriers to use of certain methods should be considered when providing contraceptives to adolescents. In particular, ease of use, confidentiality, and menstrual effects are main concerns of adolescents. Contraceptive counseling with adolescents should describe method efficacy, discuss

PURPOSE: In sub-Saharan Africa, sexually active adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) experience high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) and low levels of contraceptive use, but the effect of IPV on contraceptive use is not well understood.
METHODS: In the Girl Power-Malawi study, AGYW aged 15-24 were recruited from 4 health centers in Lilongwe, Malawi, and followed for 1 year. At baseline, AGYW were assessed for IPV using the modified Conflict Tactics Scale. AGYW reported contraceptive method use at 6 and 12 months, characterized as barrier, non-barrier, or any modern method. Modifie

BACKGROUND: Pakistan is the world's sixth most populated country, with a population of approximately 208 million people. Despite this, just 25% of legitimate couples say they have used modern contraceptive methods. A large body of literature has indicated that sexual satisfaction is a complex and multifaceted concept, since it involves physical and cultural components. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of influencing factors in terms of contraceptive self-efficacy (CSE), contraceptive knowledge, and spousal communication on the adoption of modern contraceptive methods for

Although contraceptive research has markedly decreased in the United States, it has continued in other countries. The emphasis has been on the development of long-acting, noncoitally related contraceptives, including the progestogen-only and progestogen-estrogen vaginal rings. The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device is highly effective and, like other contraceptives, may contribute to a decrease in the incidence of pelvic inflammatory disease. There is a great need for more effective, acceptable barrier contraceptives. The vaginal condom does not appear to be acceptable to many couple

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) have high rates of unintended pregnancies and are at higher risk for HIV infection compared to older women of reproductive age. Using a socio-ecological model approach, this research investigated perceptions of contraception services among AGYW who had been recipients of a combination HIV-prevention intervention, to better understand factors affecting their access to and use of contraception services.
METHOD: Qualitative methods used in this study included focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-dep

Women with physical disabilities face unique challenges often not addressed by gynecologists regarding choices of contraceptive method. Interactions between some hormonal methods of contraception and disability-related medications, inability to use barrier methods because of limitations in manual dexterity, potentially elevated risk for DVT, and need for menstrual management are factors that complicate decisions about contraceptive methods for this growing population. Objective: This study assessed similarities and differences in the use of and satisfaction with different methods of birth contr

BACKGROUND: Low socioeconomic status is one of many barriers that may limit access to family planning services. We aimed to examine the relation between household income and contraceptive methods among female youth in Canada.
METHODS: Our study population included sexually active females aged 15-24 who were trying to avoid pregnancy. We used cross-sectional data from the 2009-2010 and 2013-2014 cycles of the Canadian Community Health Survey to compare household income and other sociodemographic covariates for those using oral contraceptives, injectable contraceptives, condoms or a dual method

Selection of a method of contraception in patients with liver disease can be complicated. Tubal ligation should be considered in the setting of chronic liver disease for those patients who have completed families. Multiple reversible methods of contraception are currently available but may affect hepatic disease. Estrogen-containing contraceptive methods are contraindicated in patients with acute liver disease. Progestin contraceptives appear to be safe and multiple delivery systems are available. With rare exception, barrier methods and the intrauterine device may be offered as alternative me

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe barriers to provision of postpartum permanent contraception at patient, hospital, and insurance levels.
RECENT FINDINGS: Permanent contraception remains the most commonly used form of contraception in the United States with the majority of procedures performed during birth-hospitalization. Many people live in regions with a high Catholic hospital market share where individual contraceptive plans may be refused based on religious doctrine. Obesity should not preclude an individual from receiving a postpartum tubal ligation as recent studies find that operative ti

In Malawi, 50% of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) have had a first child by age 19 and 45% report their pregnancies as unintended or mistimed. Yet, uptake of contraception remains low. Understanding how interactions with social ties impact AGYW contraceptive use might explain low uptake beyond individual and environmental factors. Data are from Girl-Power, a study among sexually active AGYW, aged 15-24, in Malawi. We used logistic regression models to examine whether contraceptive communication and social norms (descriptive and injunctive) were associated with contraceptive use (non-ba

BACKGROUND: Female Sex Workers (FSWs) are predisposed to a broad range of social, sexual and reproductive health problems such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs)/HIV, unintended pregnancy, violence, sexual exploitation, stigma and discrimination. Female sex workers have unmet need for contraceptives and require comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) prevention interventions. Existing programs pay little attention to the broad sexual and reproductive health and rights of these women and often focus on HIV and other STIs prevention, care and treatment while neglecting their re
