Evaluation of contrast sensitivity measurements after retrobulbar optic neuritis in Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of contrast sensitivity is an important additional examination that allows the physician to achieve the full picture of a patient's quality of vision. In low-contrast conditions, more discrete visual dysfunctions may be revealed, which could be overlooked in high-contrast tests. METHODS: The examined group consisted of 33 eyes of 27 patients with multiple sclerosis. The study included patients with full or almost full visual acuity, without visual field defects or any other ophthalmic condition, and who had never undergone any ocular surgery or trauma. The reference

Contrast sensitivity deficits in inferred magnocellular and parvocellular pathways in retinitis pigmentosa.

PURPOSE: To define the contrast sensitivity deficits of patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) under testing conditions designed to emphasize threshold mediation by either the magnocellular (MC) or parvocellular (PC) pathway. METHOD: Contrast sensitivity was measured with spatially localized, narrow-band test patterns at peak spatial frequencies ranging from 0.25 to 8 cycles per degree (cpd), using a steady-pedestal paradigm (brief presentation of the test stimulus against a continuously presented luminance pedestal) and a pulsed-pedestal paradigm (simultaneous brief presentation of the test

Luminance and chromatic contrast sensitivity in dyslexia: the magnocellular deficit hypothesis revisited.

The hypothesis of a magnocellular channel deficit in dyslexia was tested. Subjects were 10-year-old dyslexics and normal readers. Psychophysical thresholds for luminance and chromatic contrasts were estimated using black and white and red and green sinusoidal gratings of various spatial frequencies, presented in static and dynamic conditions (drift and reversal). Significant group differences were found for luminance contrast, with a higher sensitivity in dyslexics. No group differences were obtained for chromatic contrast. High luminance contrast sensitivity correlated with low reading and wr

Spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity, coherent motion, and visible persistence in developmental dyslexia.

Three experiments measured spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity, coherent motion, and visible persistence in a single group of children with developmental dyslexia and a matched control group. The findings were consistent with a transient channel disorder in the dyslexic group which showed a reduction in contrast sensitivity at low spatial frequencies, a significant reduction in sensitivity for coherent motion, and a significantly longer duration of visible persistence. The results were also examined by classifying the dyslexic group into dyseidetic, dysphonetic, and mixed (dysphoneidetic) sub

[A new method of assessing contrast sensitivity in patients with eye diseases].

A new method for examining spatial contrast sensitivity (SCS) is described, making use of the display of an IBM-compatible computer, on which sinusoidal patterns are presented: achromatic and chromatic red, green, blue against the black background at a frequency of 0.5 to 22 cycles/degree. In health similarity of curves to the achromatic and chromatic patterns was observed, with the maximal sensitivity at spatial frequencies from 2 to 8 cycles/degree and a reduction at low and high spatial frequencies. In patients with the initial open-angle glaucoma the SCS at the high spatial frequencies was

Contrast sensitivity and other vision tests in the optic neuritis treatment trial.

PURPOSE: To determine the intercorrelation, prevalence of abnormality, and incremental detection value of vision tests in optic neuritis. METHODS: We calculated the linear correlation of paired vision tests and prevalence of abnormal test values from baseline and six-month measurements of Snellen visual acuity, Pelli-Robson contrast sensitivity, Humphrey Field Analyzer mean deviation, and Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue color vision in 438 patients entered in the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial from 1988 to 1991. The incremental detection value of nonvisual acuity tests was defined as their frequen

Disposable Printed CamBlobs Charts for Measuring Contrast Sensitivity in Patients With Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Contrast sensitivity (CS) is lowered in glaucoma. We aimed to assess whether a simple inexpensive CamBlobs CS test is just as effective as an established Pelli-Robson CS chart in assessing CS in people with glaucoma. METHODS: This study included two-groups of participants (27 no ocular disease and 23 glaucoma patients) who underwent CS testing using CamBlobs chart and a Pelli-Robson chart in each eye. Agreement and reliability between CamBlobs and Pelli-Robson charts were examined using Bland-Altman plots and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves to assess the diagnostic tes

Impact of Cataract on Color Vision and Contrast Sensitivity: A Clinical Review.

This clinical review examines current evidence on the effects of cataracts on color vision and contrast sensitivity (CS), the underlying optical mechanisms, and functional outcomes following cataract surgery. Evidence was synthesized from structured searches of the PubMed and Scopus databases, covering database inception to January 2026. Included studies quantitatively assessed how age-related cataract type or lens opacity density affects color vision, CS, and functional visual outcomes before and after standard phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. Cataract

Contrast sensitivity in glaucoma patients with visual field defects at different locations.

Contrast sensitivity (CS) is closely associated with vision-related quality of life in glaucoma patients. This cross-sectional study was performed to determine the relationship between CS and visual field (VF) sensitivity (VFS) according to the hemifield location of VF defects in 238 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) who underwent 24-2 standard automated perimetry and CS measurement on the same day. Of the 238 eyes, 83, 58, and 47 eyes had VF defects in the superior, inferior and both hemifields, respectively, and 50 had no VF defects in either hemifield. Significant correlation

Improvement of neural contrast sensitivity after long-term adaptation in pseudophakic eyes.

An adaptive optics (AO) system was used to investigate the effect of long-term neural adaptation to the habitual optical profile on neural contrast sensitivity in pseudophakic eyes after the correction of all aberrations, defocus, and astigmatism. Pseudophakic eyes were assessed at 4 and 8 months postoperatively for changes in visual performance. Visual benefit was observed in all eyes at all spatial frequencies after AO correction. The average visual benefit across spatial frequencies was higher in the pseudophakic group (3.31) at 4 months postoperatively compared to the normal group (2.41).

Contrast sensitivity function in patients with macular disease and good visual acuity.

INTRODUCTION: Contrast sensitivity function (CSF) may better estimate a patient's visual function compared with visual acuity (VA). Our study evaluates the quick CSF (qCSF) method to measure visual function in eyes with macular disease and good letter acuity. METHODS: Patients with maculopathies (retinal vein occlusion, macula-off retinal detachment, dry age-related macular degeneration and wet age-related macular degeneration) and good letter acuity (VA ≥20/30) were included. The qCSF method uses an intelligent algorithm to measure CSF across multiple spatial frequencies. All maculopathy eye

Binocular Summation and Suppression of Contrast Sensitivity in Strabismus, Fusion and Amblyopia.

Purpose: Amblyopia and strabismus affect 2%-5% of the population and cause a broad range of visual deficits. The response to treatment is generally assessed using visual acuity, which is an insensitive measure of visual function and may, therefore, underestimate binocular vision gains in these patients. On the other hand, the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) generally takes longer to assess than visual acuity, but it is better correlated with improvement in a range of visual tasks and, notably, with improvements in binocular vision. The present study aims to assess monocular and binocular C
