Content-specific fronto-parietal synchronization during visual working memory.

Lateral prefrontal and posterior parietal cortical areas exhibit task-dependent activation during working memory tasks in humans and monkeys. Neurons in these regions become synchronized during attention-demanding tasks, but the contribution of these interactions to working memory is largely unknown. Using simultaneous recordings of neural activity from multiple areas in both regions, we find widespread, task-dependent, and content-specific synchronization of activity across the fronto-parietal network during visual working memory. The patterns of synchronization are prevalent among stimulus-s

Role of the dorsal premotor cortex in rhythmic auditory-motor entrainment: a perturbational approach by rTMS.

Synchronization of body movements to an external beat is a universal human ability, which has also been recently documented in nonhuman species. The neural substrates of this rhythmic motor entrainment are still under investigation. Correlational neuroimaging data suggest an involvement of the dorsal premotor cortex (dPMC) and the supplementary motor area (SMA). In 14 healthy volunteers, we more specifically investigated the neural network underlying this phenomenon using a causal approach by an established 1-Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocol, which produces a foc

Altered development and network connectivity in a human neuronal model of 15q11.2 deletion-related neurodevelopmental disorders.

The chromosome 15q11.2 locus is deleted in 1.5% of patients with genetic epilepsy and confers a risk for intellectual disability and schizophrenia. Individuals with this deletion demonstrate increased cortical thickness, decreased cortical surface area and white matter abnormalities. Human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neural progenitor cells from 15q11.2 deletion individuals exhibit early adhesion junction and migration abnormalities, but later neuronal development and function have not been fully assessed. Imaging studies indicating altered structure and network connectivity i

Cortico-striatal synchronization in human focal seizures.

Although a number of experimental and clinical studies have pointed out participation or an even more prominent role of basal ganglia in focal seizures, the mode of interaction between cortical and striatal signals remains unclear. In the present study, we took stereoelectroencephalographic (SEEG) recordings in drug-resistant epilepsy patients, to qualitatively and quantitatively analyse the ictal striatum activity as well as its synchronization with cerebral cortex. Eleven patients who underwent SEEG evaluation were prospectively included if they fulfilled two inclusion criteria: (i) at least

Are there distinctive EEG Signatures of tinnitus-related emotional distress? Evidence from spectral parameterization and source-level functional connectivity.

Subjective tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of an external acoustic source. This study used resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) to characterize abnormal neural oscillatory activity and electrophysiological features potentially associated with tinnitus-related emotional distress. Resting-state EEG data were collected from patients with tinnitus and healthy controls. Spectral parameterization was applied to separate aperiodic and periodic components and to extract the alpha center frequency. At the same time, source-level phase-locking value (PLV) was calculated to asses

Resting state eyes-closed cortical rhythms in patients with locked-in-syndrome: an EEG study.

OBJECTIVE: Locked-in syndrome (LIS) is a state of complete paralysis, except for ocular movements, which results from ventral brainstem lesions. Patients typically are fully conscious. Here we tested the hypothesis that electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms are abnormal in LIS patients, possibly due to an impaired neural synchronization between brainstem and cerebral cortex. METHODS: Resting state eyes-closed EEG data were recorded in 13 LIS subjects and 15 cognitively normal control subjects. With reference to the individual alpha frequency (IAF), the bands of interest were delta (IAF-8 to I

Influence of common synaptic input to motor neurons on the neural drive to muscle in essential tremor.

Tremor in essential tremor (ET) is generated by pathological oscillations at 4-12 Hz, likely originating at cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathways. However, the way in which tremor is represented in the output of the spinal cord circuitries is largely unknown because of the difficulties in identifying the behavior of individual motor units from tremulous muscles. By using novel methods for the decomposition of multichannel surface EMG, we provide a systematic analysis of the discharge properties of motor units in nine ET patients, with concurrent recordings of EEG activity. This analysis allowed

Propagation of beta bursts from the motor cortex to the motor units of multiple upper-limb muscles.

Beta band (13-30 Hz) oscillations have been closely associated with motor control, yet their precise functional significance remains a subject of debate. Recent research suggests that beta activity occurs in transient bursts, which may better capture its role in movement regulation than sustained oscillations. Although cortical and subcortical beta bursts have been extensively studied, their transmission to muscles-particularly in the upper limb-remains poorly understood and has been limited by traditional bipolar EMG techniques. In this study, we used high-density surface electromyography (HD

Interhemispheric desynchronization of spontaneous spike-wave discharges by corpus callosum transection in rats with petit mal-like epilepsy.

Wistar rats of a strain inbred for spontaneous generalized non-convulsive seizures present EEG spike-wave discharges (SWDs), 7-10 c/sec, occurring about once/min and lasting about 15 sec. They are bilateral and synchronous and can be recorded over the entire neocortex and in the lateral thalamic nuclei. After corpus callosum section, only a few bilateral SWDs persisted. Asymmetrical SWDs were most often recorded: bilateral SWDs starting asynchronously, or unilateral SWDs, which were also seen to alternate abruptly between hemispheres. The thalamic SWDs were always synchronized with the ipsilat

From Signal Stacking to Dynamic Coupling: A Critical Review of Wearable EEG-EMG Fusion Brain-Computer Interfaces for Stroke Rehabilitation.

This structured critical review examines wearable brain-computer interface (BCI) systems that integrate electroencephalographic (EEG) and electromyographic (EMG) signals for post-stroke motor rehabilitation. The central engineering problem is the spatio-temporal heterogeneity between cortical and muscular signals, which limits the reliability and generalizability of conventional EEG-EMG fusion. We review acquisition and synchronization methods, data-, feature-, and decision-level fusion, deep-learning architectures, wearable implementation, and clinically oriented closed-loop rehabilitation. Switching state to engage and sustain attention: Dynamic synchronization of the frontoparietal network.

Sustained attention (SA) is essential for maintaining focus over time, with disruptions linked to various neurological and psychiatric disorders. The oscillatory dynamics and functional connectivity in the dorsal frontoparietal network (dFPN) are crucial in SA. However, the neuronal mechanisms that control the level of SA, especially in response to heightened attentional demands, remain poorly understood. To examine the role of rhythmic synchronization in the dFPN in SA, we recorded local field potential and single unit activity in ferrets that performed the 5-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task

Structural bases of intracortical processes underlying the synchronization of epileptic potentials in the sensorimotor areas of the neocortex in rats.

Studies in long-term isolated areas of the rat neocortex were performed to investigate the dynamics of the numbers and areas of nerve cell bodies in layer V and to compare these data with the degree of synchronization of epileptic discharges evoked by application of penicillin. Decreases in the number of pyramidal neurons with body areas of 200-350 microm2 in isolated strips after maintenance for 30 and 90 days led to decreases in the degree of synchronization of epileptiform potentials. Large pyramidal neurons are known to have long horizontal axon collaterals, spreading into layers V and VI

Relationship of sigma activity to sleep interictal epileptic discharges: a study in children affected by benign epilepsy with occipital paroxysms.

INTRODUCTION: By applying spectral analysis techniques we recently showed that Interictal Epileptic Discharges (IEDs) are modulated by sleep spindle synchronization mechanisms (sigma activity, SA, 12. 0-16.0 Hz). This finding applies to both benign epilepsy of childhood with rolandic spikes (BECRS), to symptomatic epilepsy of childhood strongly activated by sleep and to the Landau-Kleffner syndrome. These results are quite different from those found in adult partial epileptic patients where slow wave activity (SWA, 0. 5-4.5 Hz) plays the main role in the modulation of IEDs during sleep. This f

[Electrographic activity in rats during elaboration of fine distinctions].

A definite correlation has been found between the background EEG, the sensory afterdischarge (SAD) of the visual cortex and the nature of the animals' behaviour. Calmer rats with a well pronounced SAD exhibited activation of a certain type of hygienic movements, as fine differentiations were presented. As a rule, the movements were accompanied by EEG synchronization. At the same time positive conditioned reflexes persisted, in spite of an increased number of collisions. In restless animals, as the stress situation became stronger, forced movements appeared against the background of EEG desynch

Auditory Rhythm Encoding during the Last Trimester of Human Gestation: From Tracking the Basic Beat to Tracking Hierarchical Nested Temporal Structures.

Rhythm perception and synchronization to periodicity hold fundamental neurodevelopmental importance for language acquisition, musical behavior, and social communication. Rhythm is omnipresent in the fetal auditory world and newborns demonstrate sensitivity to auditory rhythmic cues. During the last trimester of gestation, the brain begins to respond to auditory stimulation and to code the auditory environment. When and how during this period do the neural capacities for rhythm processing develop? We conducted a cross-sectional study in 46 neonates (24 male) born between 27 and 35 weeks gestati

Spatiotemporal properties of cortical haemodynamic response to auditory stimuli in sleeping infants revealed by multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy.

Multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used as a neuroimaging tool to study functional activation of the developing brain in infants. In this paper, we focus on spatiotemporal dynamics of cortical oxygenation changes during sensory processing in young infants. We use a 94-channel NIRS system to assess the activity of wide regions of the cortex in quietly sleeping three-month-old infants. Auditory stimuli composed of a random sequence of pure tones induced haemodynamic changes not only in the temporal auditory regions, but also in the occipital and frontal regions. Analyses of

Spike-wave rhythms in cat cortex induced by parenteral penicillin. I. Electroencephalographic features.

Surface and depth recordings were made in 21 cats with generalized, parenteral penicillin induced epileptiform activity often assuming spike-wave forms, to obtain information on the structural substrate of "spontaneous" spike-wave rhythms. Recordings were made from neocortex, medial and lateral thalamus, hippocampus and brainstem reticular formation. Epileptiform activity first appeared in cortex and subsequently projected to depth structures. Occasionally, focal discharges could be seen in subcortical structures, but these generally did not spread to cortex. No consistent "pacemaker" was iden

Nonlinear dynamics of a corticothalamic coupled neural mass model reproduce the mechanism of 40 Hz ASSR generation.

Auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) provide a powerful tool for investigating oscillatory dynamics and network synchronization along the auditory pathway. However, existing neural mass models of 40 Hz ASSR have largely focused on cortical microcircuits or macroscopic phenomenology, while neglecting the closed-loop regulation formed by thalamocortical feedforward transmission and thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN)-mediated feedback inhibition. To address this, we constructed an Auditory Corticothalamic Neural Mass Model (ACT-NMM) that investigates cortical pyramidal neurons (Pyr), parvalbumin-
