CONTEXT: Lack of appreciation of cultural differences compromises care for seriously ill African American patients, yet training programs for clinicians in providing culturally appropriate care is lacking. The goals of this study were to partner with a southern, African American community to create a training program for clinicians on how to communicate in a culturally congruent and respectful way with older southern, African Americans with serious illness and at end of life, and test program delivery feasibility.
METHODS: Community Based Participatory Research guided the equitable partnershi

Although the process of dying is a universal human experience, it often magnifies individuals' unique cultural differences. Persons experiencing homelessness (PEHs) have unique barriers, challenges, and wishes for end-of-life care. There is insufficient evidence about how to provide culturally congruent advance care planning (ACP) through advance directive (AD) completion for PEHs. This study addressed this knowledge gap, and its findings serve as the basis for developing additional strategies to promote a satisfying ACP experience for this population when they complete an AD. The purpose of t

BACKGROUND: Changes in Polish demographic data with a growing number of culturally and linguistically diverse patients stipulate new directions in medical education to prepare future physicians to work effectively across cultures. However, little is known about Polish medical students' willingness to gain cross-cultural knowledge and skills, desire to get engaged in interactions with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds, expectations and needs concerning cross-cultural training as well as challenges they face in the path to cultural competence.
METHODS: Therefore, in this study, we cond

Changes in the language and terminology used to refer to individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), as well as how best to discuss issues of sexual and gender identity, can prove challenging for health care providers due to (1) lack of training; (2) interdisciplinary issues; and (3) prejudices on personal and institutional levels. Given the importance of language in the relationship between health care provider and patient as well as the myriad ways in which language can reflect knowledge, skills, and attitudes, we contend that language is both a facilitator and

BACKGROUND: Cultural competence is an essential dimension of contemporary health care delivery, particularly in diverse, multicultural societies. South Africa, with its rich linguistic and cultural plurality, presents a unique context in which culturally responsive care is critical for equitable health outcomes. Despite growing international attention to cultural competence in health professions education, little research has explored this domain within optometry education in sub-Saharan Africa.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess self-reported levels of cultural competence, specifically pr

It is well appreciated that the social determinants of health are intimately related with health outcomes. However, there is a paucity of literature that explores these themes comprehensively for the indigenous people within Micronesia. Certain Micronesia-specific factors, such as transitions from traditional diets, the consumption of betel nut, and exposure to radiation from the nuclear bomb testing in the Marshall Islands, have predisposed certain Micronesian populations to an increased risk of developing a variety of malignancies. Furthermore, severe weather events and rising sea levels att

In Islamic law, Bulūgh (puberty) separates childhood from adulthood, yet English-language scholarship on it is sparse and fragmented. We reviewed primary juristic compendia of the four canonical schools of Islamic jurisprudence (Ḥanafī, Mālikī, Shāfi'ī, Ḥanbalī), synthesized biomedical literature on pubertal markers, and analyzed bioethical implications through case studies. All four schools accept iḥtilām (ejaculation) in males and ḥayḍ (menstruation) or ḥaml (pregnancy) in females as definitive; inbāt (pubic hair) and breast development are conditional in some schools. Absent physical signs,

We present findings from town hall meetings held with ethnically diverse Black prostate cancer (CaP) survivors in 2022 and 2023. Four town halls (total participants, N = 265) focused on diagnosis, treatment, psychosocial support, and overall survivorship. Moderated by a long-term CaP survivor, each session featured a panel that included medical providers (urologic oncologists and clinical psychologists), as well as CaP survivors of American, Caribbean, and African origin and their spouses. Surveys captured demographic data, clinical information, CaP-specific details (for survivors only), and p

Young transgender men (YTM) remain underserved by HIV prevention efforts. It is estimated that 3% of transgender men have an HIV diagnosis despite a rate of only 0.4% among the U.S. population, and young people account for more than half of new HIV diagnoses. We conducted in-depth interviews with a sample of participants who used MyPEEPS YTM to assess acceptability and perceived usefulness of the app. Qualitative analysis of the interviews was guided by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and allowed us to identify app benefits including HIV prevention reinforcement and faci

BACKGROUND: A variety of approaches are available that provide cultural competency education for practicing physicians. There is, however, still a need for additional, innovative approaches that address continuing education and professional improvement regarding cultural competency for physicians after their training.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential impact on established clinicians of writing an extended case narrative on cultural competency.
METHODS: We conducted structured interviews of physician contributors (n = 14) to a book of cases on cultural competency. Authors were invited to co

AIM: To explore the transformative learning experiences of postgraduate nursing students engaging in an Aboriginal culture and history module, through an analysis of a critical reflection assessment, in particular the student development of cultural awareness and culturally safe practice.
BACKGROUND: Despite mandated inclusion of Aboriginal cultural content in Australian nursing curricula, culturally unsafe practices and racism persist. Transformative learning, underpinned by critical reflection, can challenge fixed assumptions and promote cultural awareness and culturally safe care.

BACKGROUND: People from ethnically minoritised backgrounds are significantly over-represented within the criminal justice system, as are those with personality difficulties. The offender personality disorder pathway offers services for people with personality difficulties associated with serious offending and aims to work in a culturally attuned way with individuals from ethnically minoritised backgrounds.
AIMS: To establish a baseline of how culturally informed formulations are within our services.

For persons at risk for and experiencing amputations, accessible and cost-effective healthcare plays an essential role in prevention and rehabilitation. In Trinidad and Tobago, amputations continue to rise, despite the national healthcare system's attention to prevention, making the country a relevant case for providing insights into experiences of amputations within a healthcare system. The study used a basic interpretive, qualitative design with interviews conducted with 17 persons with lower-limb amputations and 17 relatives across Trinidad and Tobago. Thematic analysis revealed five themes

Transgender persons who undergo masculinizing hormone therapy experience a wide array of dermatologic effects as they initiate and maintain testosterone therapy. Acne is one of the most common adverse effects for many transmasculine patients receiving testosterone. Acne can worsen body image and mental health, with significant impact on quality of life in transgender patients. Specific training and awareness are needed for a clinically and culturally competent encounter while providing care for the transgender patient. This article provides a practical guide for the treatment of testosterone-i

Modern Western societies are characterized by a considerable cultural and ethnic diversity whereby different groups and minorities live side by side. However, not all people are viewed in the same light by the autochthonous population. This is particularly true in the case of Muslim immigrants, who are often prone to negative stereotyping and prejudice. This has become increasingly apparent since the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and the subsequent attacks in various Western countries. This study seeks to analyze the relation between female nurses and those labeled by nurses as "Muslim fa
