Photoallergic hand eczema due to benzydamine.

Hand eczema is a very frequent pathology in Dermatology. We report the case of a 65-year-old woman who developed a photoallergic eczema on her hands due to benzydamine present in her gynecological washing solution. It is probably an under-diagnosed cause of hand dermatitis. It also draws attention to the importance of a good anamnesis in dermatology.

[The dangers of olaquindox. Photoallergy, chronic photosensitive dermatitis and extreme increased photosensitivity in the human, hypoaldosteronism in swine].

The antibiotic olaquindox, an ingredient added to porker feed to increase overall performance, caused a photoallergic contact eczema and subsequently a chronic photosensitive dermatitis with increased UV-A- and UV-B-sensitivity in a breeder of small pigs. Through the use of sun creams he developed an additional (photo)allergic contact eczema to the sunscreens contained in the creams.

Phototoxicity and photoallergy in man.

Photosensitivity is the broad term used to denote adverse reactions to the sun. These reactions may be phototoxic or photoallergic. Phototoxic reactions are much more common than photoallergic reactions. Phototoxic reactions may be photodynamic or nonphotodynamic in nature, the primary difference being that photodynamic reactions require oxygen. Porphyrins are examples of molecules which produce photodynamic responses. The 8-methoxypsoralen photobinding to DNA is an example of a nonphotodynamic reaction. The UVB sunburn response is the most common phototoxic reaction, and it appears to be nonp

Occurrence of plant sensitivity among patients of photodermatoses: a control-matched study of 156 cases from New Delhi.

BACKGROUND: Photodermatitis is an abnormal response to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). The photoallergic contact dermatitis caused by plant allergens is a serious cause of morbidity in India. Airborne contact dermatitis is the classical presentation of plant-induced dermatosis, which may become difficult to differentiate from chronic actinic dermatitis in chronic cases. The rapid growth of parthenium weed in India and its ill effects on the population make it important to detect all cases of parthenium sensitivity, which in some cases might simulate photodermatitis. AIMS: This study aims to dete

Investigation of photosensitive disorders.

Investigation of photodermatosis is based primarily on the history and clinical findings, histological, immunological and biochemical findings are variably helpful depending on the clinical picture. Formal testing for photosensitivity may be the only definitive test proving photosensitivity on occasion. This article delineates the important features which allow classification of patients which then enables appropriate treatment.

Comparison of racial distribution of photodermatoses in USA academic dermatology clinics: A multicenter retrospective analysis of 1080 patients over a 10-year period.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies at single academic institutions have identified variations in the prevalence of photodermatoses among racial groups. The purpose of the study was to compare the distribution of photodermatoses between Whites and Blacks at four academic medical centers in the USA. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed at four institutions' general dermatology clinics using diagnoses consistent with the International Classification of Disease (ICD), Ninth and Tenth Revisions, codes related to photodermatoses between August 2006 and August 2016. A total of 9736 charts w

Photodermatoses: Exploring Clinical Presentations, Causative Factors, Differential Diagnoses, and Treatment Strategies.

Photodermatoses encompass a group of skin diseases triggered by exposure to UV radiation. Most frequently, these conditions are subcategorized as either photocontact dermatitis (PCD) or photoallergic dermatitis. Although generally non-life threatening, photodermatoses can severely diminish a patient's quality of life and cause considerable distress. Photocontact dermatitis, also known as photoallergy, represents a type of allergic contact dermatitis that develops following exposure to an inciting topical, oral, or environmental allergen with subsequent exposure to sunlight. The distinctive cha

Common environmental contact allergens in Singapore.

Contact allergens produce three types of reactions. The commonest reaction is allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). The commonest contactants in Singapore causing ACD are, in decreasing order of importance, nickel, fragrances, neomycin, lanolin, colophony, flavine, rubber chemicals, paraphenylenediamine, clioquinol and chromates. Another type of allergic contact reaction is immunologic contact urticaria (ICU). ICU is an IgE mediated mechanisms. Contact allergens causing ICU in Singapore are proteinaceous foodstuffs and rubber latex products. Photoallergic contact dermatitis is occasionally seen i

Contact dermatitis II. Clinical aspects and diagnosis.

Contact dermatitis (CD) is an altered state of skin reactivity induced by exposure to an external agent. "Eczema" and "dermatitis" are often used synonymously to denote a polymorphic pattern of inflammation of the skin characterized, at least in its acute phase, by erythema, vesiculation and pruritus. Substances that induce CD after single or multiple exposures may be irritant or allergic in nature. The clinical presentation may vary depending on the identity of the triggering agent and the reactivity of the subject, but in all cases the lesions are primarily confined to the site of contact. A

[Adverse cutaneous reactions induced by exposure to woods].

Various adverse cutaneous reactions may occur as a result of exposure to wood dust or solid woods. These include allergic contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis and, more rarely, contact urticaria, photoallergic and phototoxic reactions. Also cases of erythema multiforme-like reactions have been reported. Contact dermatitis, both allergic and irritant, is most frequently provoked by exotic woods, e.g. wood of the Dalbergia spp., Machaerium scleroxylon or Tectona grandis. Cutaneous reactions are usually associated with manual or machine woodworking, in occupational setting or as a hobb

Surprising results of patch testing with the baseline series in patients with photocontact allergy to ketoprofen.

OBJECTIVE: Photoallergic reactions due to topical ketoprofen are common. As some simultaneous contact allergies have been described in the literature, we aimed to get an overview of the pattern of reactivity towards common allergens in the baseline series in ketoprofen-photoallergic individuals. METHODS: Using our database, we found 94 patients with photocontact allergy to ketoprofen diagnosed during 1999-2018. Approximately 12 800 patients patch tested with the baseline series during the same time frame served as controls. Data on patch testing with the baseline series of 518 individuals bel

Photodermatitis with minimal inflammatory infiltrate: clinical inflammatory conditions with discordant histologic findings.

Dermatoses associated with cutaneous photosensitivity are a group of photodistributed skin eruptions caused or exacerbated by light. Multiple clinical variants of photosensitive dermatoses have been characterized including polymorphous light eruption, chronic actinic dermatitis, solar urticaria, phototoxic and photoallergic dermatitis, reticular erythematous mucinosis, acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, and dermatomyositis. As there may be significant overlap among the clinical presentation of these conditions, the specific diagnosis of individual photodermatosis relies heavily on characteri

Contact Allergy to Oxidized Linalool and Oxidized Limonene is Over-represented in Individuals with Photocontact Allergy to Ketoprofen.

Simultaneous contact allergies are common in individuals with photocontact allergy to ketoprofen. The rate of contact allergy to the fragrance substances oxidized linalool and oxidized limonene in ketoprofen-photo-allergic individuals were investigated in comparison with the corresponding rates in individuals without photo-contact allergy to ketoprofen, using Fisher's exact test. A total of 4,021 patients were routinely tested with oxidized linalool; of whom 190 (4.7%) tested positively. For oxidized limonene the numbers were 3,797 patients and 111 positive reactions (2.9%). A total of 19 cont

Prospective Multi-Centre Photopatch Test Study of Photoallergy to Sunscreens and NSAIDs in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Whilst photopatch testing is recognized as the investigation of choice for photoallergic contact dermatitis, changes in potential photoallergen exposure and variables within the photopatch test technique, have led to challenges in its usage within dermatology. OBJECTIVES: The main objectives of this study were to determine the nature and prevalence of topical photoallergens in Europe and investigate the variable of photoallergen occlusion time before irradiation, on photopatch testing outcomes. METHODS: A prospective multi-centre study of photopatch testing to sunscreens, non-ste

Assay of contact photosensitivity to musk ambrette in guinea pigs.

This study reports the induction of contact photodermatitis to musk ambrette, 2-methoxy-3,5-dinitro-4-methyl-t-butylbenzene, in guinea pigs. Photoallergic contact dermatitis was assayed using 2 alternative induction methods. Successful photosensitization was achieved only when the nuchal skin was stripped with scotch tape before application of musk ambrette and ultraviolet radiation. Induction methods utilizing nonstripped nuchal skin which induce photosensitivity to potent photoallergens were ineffective for musk ambrette. Phtotoxicity tests to musk ambrette at concentrations between 1 and 50

Photopatch testing of 182 patients: a 6-year experience at the Mayo Clinic.

BACKGROUND: Photopatch testing is important for diagnosing photoallergic contact dermatitis. Although results of photopatch testing have been presented from many European centers, there have been few reports of the results of photopatch testing in the United States. OBJECTIVE: To review the Mayo Clinic's recent experience with photopatch testing, identify common photoallergens, and compare our current and previous findings. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed records of patients who underwent photopatch testing at the Mayo Clinic between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2005 (N = 182). RE

Cutaneous allergic reactions to tattoo ink.

Tattoo artists use many compounds to create tattoo pigment and several allergic reactions can occur as a result of these additives. The compositions of many inks have been identified; however, as new mixtures are created it becomes difficult to identify the specific ingredients in a particular ink. Allergic reactions to a particular pigment can manifest in several ways including allergic contact dermatitis and photoallergic dermatitis. Subsequently, tattoo ink or pigment allergy reactions can be classified as acute inflammatory reactions, allergic hypersensitivities, and granulomatous, licheno
