Review of leptospirosis notifications in Queensland 1985 to 1996.

To provide an overview of leptospirosis in Queensland, the World Health Organization/Food and Agriculture Organization Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Leptospirosis undertook a study of notifications of the disease from 1985 to 1996. The review encompassed information drawn from notifications to Queensland Health and questionnaires sent to doctors. Notifications were highest between February and July and the highest population rates were identified in the Central West and Peninsula Health Regions. Ninety-one per cent of notifications were for males. At risk population groups

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on compulsory notification of meningitis during the first wave of the pandemic in Brazil: an ecological study using P-score.

BACKGROUND: Meningitis is listed as one of the diseases requiring compulsory notification in Brazil. It can affect all age groups and also has no seasonality. Cases can be recorded in all months of the year and in all states of Brazil. Despite its importance, the obligation of immediate notification may have been compromised by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the immediate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on compulsory notifications of meningitis in Brazil and its states during the first wave of the pandemic. DESIGN AND SETTING: This was an ecological s

Traditional and Web-Based Technologies to Improve Partner Notification Following Syphilis Diagnosis Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in Lima, Peru: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Patient-initiated partner notification (PN) following the diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection is a critical component of disease control in men who have sex with men (MSM) sexual networks. Both printed and internet-based technologies offer potential tools to enhance traditional partner notification approaches among MSM in resource-limited settings. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the effect of 2 different PN technologies on notification outcomes following syphilis diagnosis among MSM in Peru: a Web-based notification system and patient-deliv

[A multicenter study regarding schizophrenia patients' notification of the diagnosis].

Over 10 years have passed since the Japanese term for "schizophrenia" was changed from "seishin-bunretsu-byo" to "togo-shiccho-sho" in 2002. An awareness survey targeting doctors suggested that notification of the diagnosis has been encouraged since the Japanese name for schizophrenia was changed. However, no heuristic surveys targeting patients themselves have clarified an increased notification rate, and no multicenter studies of the notification rates have been conducted in recent years. This study targeted schizophrenia patients and their attending physicians to investigate the status of n

Blood donor notification rate in a blood bank in Veracruz, Mexico.

Blood banks are primarily responsible for providing safe blood, but they also indirectly act to prevent the spread of infectious diseases by notifying blood donors of positive screening results. The notification process differs between countries and notifications rates are generally low. This study sought to analyze the notification rate of healthy and infection-positive donors who donated blood at CETS-Veracruz. A total of 41790 donors were analyzed, 1585 (3.79%) were positive for one or more of the screened infection markers. Only 4163 (9.96% of the total) were notified about their serology

Under-reporting of notifiable infectious disease hospitalizations in a health board region in Ireland: room for improvement?

Rapid notification of infectious diseases is essential for prompt public health action and for monitoring of these diseases in the Irish population at both a local and national level. Anecdotal evidence suggests, however, that the occurrence of notifiable infectious diseases is seriously underestimated. This study aims to assess the level of hospitalization for notifiable infectious diseases for a 6-year period in one health board region in Ireland and to assess whether or not there was any under-reporting during this period. All hospital in-patient admissions from 1997 to 2002 inclusive with

Temporal trends in legionellosis national notification data and the effect of COVID-19, Switzerland, 2000-2020.

The notification rate of legionellosis in Switzerland and other European countries has markedly increased over the last 20 years. Here, we investigated the Swiss notification data on legionellosis from 2000 to 2020 in regards of overall time trend, content and data quality. We further explored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the reported case numbers using an interrupted time series approach. Between 2000 and 2020, 5980 cases were included in our analysis. The annual crude notification rate for legionellosis cases increased from 1.1/100,000 population (CI: 0.9-1.4) in 2000 to 5.6/100,00

Rising incidence of gonorrhea in Taiwan amid the COVID-19 pandemic: a nationwide surveillance study.

Background The protracted battle against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a profound impact on various facets of society. The epidemiology of several diseases underwent alterations following the implementation of social restrictive strategies and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI). Methods In response to these changes, we conducted a retrospective nationwide surveillance study to investigate the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections during the pandemic. Weekly incidences of gonorrhea, syphilis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and enterovirus were extracted from the n

Pertussis notifications decline in Australia during COVID-19 non-pharmaceutical interventions, 2020-2021.

BACKGROUND: Following implementation of coronavirus diseases 2019 (COVID-19) non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) in early 2020, declines in the incidence of other respiratory pathogens have been reported. This study aimed to assess the impact of these interventions on pertussis notifications in Australia. METHODS: We compared monthly national notification rates for pertussis during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020 and 2021) to those during the three pre-pandemic years (2017 to 2019). Incidence rate ratios (IRR) by age group and jurisdiction were calculated for 2020 and 2

Evaluation of the surveillance system for invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in the Netherlands, 2004-2016.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced surveillance for confirmed cases of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) was introduced in the Netherlands in 2003, in which reference laboratory data (NRLBM) are linked with notification data (OSIRIS). The quality of surveillance information is important for public health decision making. Our objective was to describe the system and evaluate it for data completeness and timeliness. METHODS: Cases reported in the surveillance system from 2004 to 2016 were included. For the notification data, we used information on serogroup, vaccination status, mortality, and country of i

Sensitivity of the Swedish statutory surveillance system for communicable diseases 1998-2002, assessed by the capture-recapture method.

To assess the sensitivity of the Swedish surveillance system, four notifiable communicable diseases in Sweden were examined during 1998-2002 with the two-sources capture-recapture method, based on parallel clinical and laboratory notifications. The sensitivity (proportion of diagnosed diseases actually being notified) was highest for salmonellosis (99.9%), followed by meningococcal infection (98.7%), and tularaemia (98.5%). For penicillin-resistant pneumococci, introduced as a notifiable disease in 1996, the overall sensitivity was 93.4%--increasing from 86.5% in 1998 to 98.5% in 2002. The sys

Time trends of positivity rates from foodborne pathogen testing in Switzerland, 2003 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis are important foodborne diseases in Europe, including in Switzerland. In 2014, notification rates for Switzerland were 92.9 per 100 000 population for campylobacteriosis and 15.2 per 100 000 population for salmonellosis. These notification rates originate from laboratory-based surveillance whereby positive test results are reported to the National Notification System for Infectious Diseases. Consequently, notification rates do not directly correspond to the disease burden among the population as the number of positive tests depends on patients'

Report of the National Influenza Surveillance Scheme, 2020-2021.

This report describes influenza surveillance activities in Australia in 2020 to 2021 and the impact which coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) related public health and social measures (PHSMs) had on influenza notifications. Data were extracted from several sources constituting the National Influenza Surveillance Scheme. In 2020 and 2021, a range of PHSMs were instituted across Australia to reduce the spread of COVID-19. These measures had a substantial impact on influenza circulation during this time. Laboratory-confirmed influenza notifications in these years were the lowest reported to the N
