Replacing ground Rhodes grass hay with soyhulls in the pelleted diet: effects on ingestive behavior, nutrient digestibility, blood metabolites, growth performance, and economic viability of intensive fattening Lohi lambs.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of replacing soyhulls (SH) for ground Rhodes grass hay (RGH) in a pelleted diet on ingestive behavior, digestibility, blood metabolites, growth performance, and economic viability of fattening Lohi lambs. A total of thirty male lambs (age: 5 months; body weight 20.4 ± 0.24 kg) were allotted to one of the three diets (n = 10 lambs/diet) under a completely randomized design. The diets were with 25% RGH inclusion (control), replacing 15% RGH with 15% SH as a fiber source (SH-15), and containing only 25% SH inclusion on a dry basis (SH-25). Ingestive behavi

Microenterprise Intervention to Reduce Sexual Risk Behaviors and Increase Employment and HIV Preventive Practices Among Economically-Vulnerable African-American Young Adults (EMERGE): A Feasibility Randomized Clinical Trial.

Economic vulnerability, such as homelessness and unemployment, contributes to HIV risk among U.S. racial minorities. Yet, few economic-strengthening interventions have been adapted for HIV prevention in this population. This study assessed the feasibility of conducting a randomized clinical trial of a 20-week microenterprise intervention for economically-vulnerable African-American young adults. Engaging MicroenterprisE for Resource Generation and Health Empowerment (EMERGE) aimed to reduce sexual risk behaviors and increase employment and uptake of HIV preventive behaviors. Microenterprise intervention to reduce sexual risk behaviors and increase employment and HIV preventive practices in economically-vulnerable African-American young adults (EMERGE): protocol for a feasibility randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Economic vulnerability, such as homelessness and unemployment, contributes to the HIV risk among racial minorities in the U.S., who are disproportionately infected. Yet, few economic-strengthening interventions have been adapted for HIV prevention in economically-vulnerable African-American young adults. Engaging Microenterprise for Resource Generation and Health Empowerment (EMERGE) is a feasibility randomized clinical trial of an HIV prevention microenterprise intervention with integrated text messages ("nudges") that are informed by behavioral economic principles. Economic Evaluation of Videoconference Group Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Behavioral Activation Therapy for Depression Versus Usual Care Among Adults With Chronic Low Back Pain Plus Comorbid Depressive Symptoms.

Chronic pain and depression are frequently comorbid conditions associated with significant health care and social costs. This study examined the cost-utility and cost-effectiveness of videoconference-based group forms of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Behavioral Activation Therapy for Depression (BATD), as a complement to treatment-as-usual (TAU), for patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) plus depressive symptoms, compared to TAU alone. A trial-based economic evaluation (n = 234) was conducted from a governmental and health care perspective with a time horizon of 12 months. P

Behavioral Economic and Staffing Strategies To Increase Adoption of the ABCDEF Bundle in the Intensive Care Unit (BEST ICU): study protocol for a multi-site stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled trial in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Despite its proven safety and effectiveness at liberation from mechanical ventilation, ABCDEF (Assess, prevent, and manage pain; Both spontaneous awakening and breathing trials; Choice of analgesia/sedation; Delirium: assess, prevent, and manage; Early mobility/exercise; and Family engagement/empowerment) bundle performance in everyday intensive care unit (ICU) practice remains disappointingly low. This evidence-to-practice gap significantly contributes to the excessively high morbidity, mortality, costs, and disparities associated with current critical care delivery. This study wi

Surveying the Economic Mind: George Katona and the Institutionalization of Psychological Economics at Michigan, 1946-1981.

Standard histories of behavioral economics locate the field's origins in the heuristics-and-biases program of the 1970s, treating earlier attempts to join psychology and economics as a prehistory that failed to take root. This article reconstructs the most sustained of those earlier attempts: the psychological economics that George Katona (1901-1981) built at the University of Michigan's Survey Research Center between 1946 and 1981. Drawing on Katona's published writings, the institutional record of the Michigan surveys, and the contemporary debates they provoked, the article argues that Katon

Confusion cannot explain cooperative behavior in public goods games.

Some scholars find that behavioral variation in the public goods game is explained by variations in participants' understanding of how to maximize payoff and that confusion leads to cooperation. Their findings lead them to question the common assumption in behavioral economics experiments that choices reflect motivations. We conduct two experiments, in which we minimize confusion by providing participants with increased training. We also introduce a question that specifically assesses participants' understanding of payoff maximization choices. Our experimental results show that the distributio

Cost-utility of cognitive behavioral therapy versus U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended drugs and usual care in the treatment of patients with fibromyalgia: an economic evaluation alongside a 6-month randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-recommended pharmacologic treatments (RPTs; pregabalin, duloxetine, and milnacipran) are effective treatment options for fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome and are currently recommended by clinical guidelines. We compared the cost-utility from the healthcare and societal perspectives of CBT versus RPT (combination of pregabalin + duloxetine) and usual care (TAU) groups in the treatment of FM. METHODS: The economic evaluation was conducted alongside a 6-month, multicenter, randomized, blinded, parallel group,

Dermatological Diseases and Household Behavioral Spillovers: A Conceptual Framework.

Background: Chronic diseases may generate behavioral responses extending beyond the affected individual. Although family health effects and behavioral spillovers have been examined in health economics and behavioral research, their relevance to dermatological disease management has received limited conceptual attention. Objective: To develop a conceptual framework distinguishing individual behavioral adaptation from household behavioral spillovers and identifying the conditions under which disease management behaviors may extend beyond the patient. Methods: This conceptual study integrates the

E2F3a transcription factor mediates behavioral, cellular, and DNA-protein regulation of cocaine reward in the nucleus accumbens.

Drug addiction is characterized by orchestrated transcriptional changes in brain reward regions, including the nucleus accumbens (NAc). The transcription factor E2F3a has emerged as a novel regulator of cocaine's rewarding effects, yet its sex- and cell-specific mechanisms, as well as its genome-wide targets, remain undetermined. Here, we investigated the motivational and reinforcing roles of E2F3a in cocaine reward using conditioned place preference (CPP) and self-administration, combined with behavioral economics and viral-mediated gene manipulation. Selective overexpression of E2F3a in D1-t

Selecting optimized behavioral interventions from an optimization randomized controlled trial on increasing COVID-19 testing for African American/Black and Latino frontline essential workers not up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccination.

BACKGROUND: African American/Black and Latino (AABL) persons suffer higher COVID-19 infection rates and adverse consequences (hospitalization, death) compared to White persons, especially among frontline essential workers who are not up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccination. Regular COVID-19 testing plays an essential role in mitigating such disparities. PURPOSE: The New York Community Action Project (NCAP), conducted in New York City between July 2022 and February 2024, was motivated by the goal of developing an effective and implementable behavioral intervention to promote COVID-19 testing among

Pathological gambling in Parkinson's disease: subthalamic oscillations during economics decisions.

Pathological gambling develops in up to 8% of patients with Parkinson's disease. Although the pathophysiology of gambling remains unclear, several findings argue for a dysfunction in the basal ganglia circuits. To clarify the role of the subthalamic nucleus in pathological gambling, we studied its activity during economics decisions. We analyzed local field potentials recorded from deep brain stimulation electrodes in the subthalamic nucleus while parkinsonian patients with (n = 8) and without (n = 9) pathological gambling engaged in an economics decision-making task comprising conflictual tri

Rx: human nature.

Why doesn't a woman who continues to have unwanted pregnancies avail herself of the free contraception at a nearby clinic? What keeps people from using free chlorine tablets to purify their drinking water? Behavioral economics has shown us that we don't always act in our own best interests. This is as true of health decisions as it is of economic ones. An array of biases, limits on cognition, and motivations leads people all over the world to make suboptimal health choices. The good news is that human nature can also be a source of solutions. Through her studies in Zambia exploring the reasons

Strengthening Social and Behavior Change in Postabortion Care: A Call to Action for Health Professionals.

Social and behavior change approaches have shown promise for addressing the demand- and supply-side challenges in postabortion care. As implementers seek to improve the quality of postabortion care, systematically integrating long-standing models and emerging approaches, including behavioral economics, human-centered design, and attribute-based models of behavior change, can promote positive health outcomes.

Dopaminergic influences on risk preferences of Parkinson's disease patients.

Clinicians are increasingly recognizing impulse control disorders (ICDs) as a complication of dopaminergic treatment in Parkinson's disease (PD). Considering the pivotal role of dopamine in reward information processing, ICDs may originate from dysregulation of reward-oriented behavior, and the behavioral changes may be reflected in shifts of psychological risk preference during decision-making. We used a behavioral economics paradigm to evaluate quantitatively the risk preferences of PD patients in levodopa on and off states. We also examined age-matched healthy controls. We found that levodo

A Nudge Theory-Based Mobile Health Intervention for Self-Management in Young and Middle-Aged Patients With Hypertension: Mixed Methods Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Young and middle-aged patients with hypertension often show poor self-management due to limited cognitive bandwidth. Mobile health apps using behavioral economics may be helpful for these patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the preliminary effectiveness and usability of a nudge-based mobile app (LeYi) for improving self-management in young and middle-aged patients with hypertension. METHODS: This mixed-methods pilot study used a single-group pre-post design. Thirty participants completed a 24-week intervention. Outcomes were assessed using validated scales and inter

Protocol to evaluate sequential electronic health record-based strategies to increase genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer risk across diverse patient populations in gynecology practices.

BACKGROUND: Germline genetic testing is recommended by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) for individuals including, but not limited to, those with a personal history of ovarian cancer, young-onset (< 50 years) breast cancer, and a family history of ovarian cancer or male breast cancer. Genetic testing is underused overall, and rates are consistently lower among Black and Hispanic populations. Behavioral economics-informed implementation strategies, or nudges, directed towards patients and clinicians may increase the use of this evidence-based clinical practice. METHODS: Patient

Polydrug abuse: Choice between drugs as a function of concurrent nonindependent ratio sizes.

Polydrug abuse is the persistent self-administration of more than one reinforcing drug. The present study provided rhesus monkeys concurrent access to two drugs: 8% alcohol and solutions of either cocaine or methadone. The liquids were available under concurrent nonindependent fixed-ratio (FR) schedules across increasing and then decreasing ratio sizes. These schedules generate high rates of changeover responses and yield a dependent variable of responses per delivery that is not rigidly tied to the ratio-schedule value. The programmed schedule size was equal for both liquids and increased in

Dual sigma receptor/dopamine transporter inhibition and the union of pharmacology and experimental psychology.

Selective standard sigma receptor (σR) antagonists block several behavioral effects of cocaine though they are inactive in altering cocaine self-administration. However, σR antagonists with affinity for the dopamine transporter (DAT) were effective in decreasing maximal cocaine self-administration. Additionally, σR/DAT inhibition affected cocaine or methamphetamine self-administration at doses that had minimal effects on comparable responding maintained by food reinforcement, suggesting that σR/DAT inhibition may serve as a lead for the discovery of stimulant-abuse medications. Further, molecu

Do Coping Motives and Perceived Impaired Control Mediate the Indirect Links from Childhood Trauma Facets to Alcohol-Related Problems?

INTRODUCTION: The Self-Medication Hypothesis suggests that individuals drink to alleviate undesirable affective states. Behavioral Economics Theory states that individuals deprived of resources (i.e., physically neglected) consume more reinforcing substances when they are available than others. Childhood trauma may indirectly increase impaired control over alcohol (IC; drinking beyond one's own intentions) and thereby increase alcohol use and problems through the employment of coping-motives. METHOD: A structural equation model that included sex as a covariate examined mediated paths with 612
