[Combined verbal and sign language for promoting communication development in non-verbal or or pre-verbal children and adolescents with mental retardation].

Conveying alternative and augmentative approaches to communication is becoming necessary for increasing numbers of persons with mental retardation with no or poor oral skills. The preverbal and nonverbal forms of communicating, hence, have special relevance in a developmental context. A natural extension of gestic messages, it in particular is the use of signing that is apt to enhance speech and language acquisition and bring about distinct improvement in understanding and making oneself understood. Exchanging messages by sign language can reveal to the child the significance of his/her own be

Increasing requests by adults with developmental disabilities using incidental teaching by peers.

A peer-delivered incidental-teaching procedure was used to instruct appropriate requesting in adults with moderate to severe mental retardation or autism. Three pairs of group-home residents participated in an incidental-teaching procedure to increase appropriate requesting, prompting, and responding of residents during lunch-preparation sessions. An increase in the number of incidental-teaching episodes during dinner was obtained, and remained high when lunch-making training sessions were withdrawn. In addition, during the incidental-teaching phase, an increase in appropriate requests and ove

Gilles de la Tourette disorder among individuals with severe or profound mental retardation.

There have been limited reports on the incidence of Gilles de la Tourette disorder among individuals with mental retardation. Only three cases have been reported in people with severe or profound mental retardation. In this paper three additional case reports of people with severe or profound mental retardation and Tourette disorder were presented. Issues related to the diagnosis of Tourette disorder in this population were discussed.

Group differences and individual classification accuracy associated with letter/word oddity problems.

The ability of 27 pairs of mildly mentally retarded and normally achieving 6- through 8-year-old students to apply an oddity rule to an experimental set of letter and word oddity problems was assessed. The mildly retarded group evidenced a markedly lower level of performance on all five experimental oddity problems, but they did evidence successful generalization to oddity arrays that visually were very different from those used in training. High levels (greater than 90%) of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive accuracy, and negative predictive accuracy were observed using only six ca

Use of adaptive behavior measures and overrepresentation of black students in programs for students with mild mental retardation.

The use of adaptive behavior information for classification and placement of black and white students with mild mental retardation was compared and overrepresentation of black students in special classes was analyzed. Adaptive behavior measures were not used to the same extent as general intelligence tests for either group, despite court decisions and recommendations by authoritative sources. Direct comparisons on general intellectual functioning and several indices of adaptive behavior yielded few differences, suggesting that an equal treatment conception of fairness was achieved despite subs

A behavioural intervention for Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in a severely mentally handicapped girl.

This paper describes an attempt to treat Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) in a severely mentally handicapped girl, using a cue-controlled relaxation technique. Response to treatment followed a pattern frequently found in the general clinical literature. Namely tic frequency decreased during relaxation sessions but there was no generalization of effects outside of relaxation sessions. Pharmacological intervention, using clonidine, also did not reduce tic frequency. However, pimozide proved immediately effective in suppressing tics and this improvement was maintained at follow-up. Medication

Changes in patterns of care of the mentally handicapped: implications for nurses' perceptions of their roles and hospital decision making processes.

This paper reports on the findings of a longitudinal study of a mental subnormality hospital in the North of England. The focus is upon how nurses have experienced a major change in care and treatment of residents from 1978 to 1980. We explore, through the eyes of nurses, the change in their role from a predominantly nurturing/custodial one to a mainly educational/community orientated role. The research findings demonstrate that this change has increased nurses' self-esteem and their satisfaction with important areas of their work. There is some evidence also that nurses/resident relationships

Cognitive antecedents of imitativeness and persistence in children with mental retardation.

Two studies with children with mild mental retardation were conducted within the framework of the cognitive orientation theory, which describes how cognitive contents and processes guide behavior and thus enable behavior predictions and modifications. The studies were designed to test whether specific clusters of beliefs would predict imitation and persistence among individuals with mental retardation. Behavioral measures and questionnaires that assessed beliefs were administered. The belief scores were related significantly to the behaviors. Implications concerning motivation, the development

Adapted physical activities for the intellectually challenged adolescent: psychomotor characteristics and implications for programming and motor intervention.

Intellectually challenged adolescents with varying degrees of functioning share common behavioral and psychomotor characteristics. A specially designed instructional approach and positive social attitude are necessary when dealing with this population. Research reveals that many of these individuals have developmental delays in the acquisition of basic motor skills. When compared as a group to their non-handicapped peers, intellectually challenged adolescents display low physical fitness and have perceptual-motor difficulties, which affect their learning. The major difficulty these individuals

Effects of modified orthography on the identification of printed words.

Research has shown that instructional methods involving pairing pictures with print interfere with identification of written words. Preliminary evidence, however, indicates that use of modified orthography (where a line drawing is superimposed upon the printed word) may be effective for reading instruction with individuals who have mental retardation. In the present study, we used a single-subject parallel treatments design with 4 adults who had moderate to severe mental retardation. They received reading instruction under two conditions--traditional and modified orthography. Results showed th

Encoding, metacognitive, auto attributional processes and memory in mentally retarded adolescents.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the improvement of the capability to retain sets of names after a training programme administered to 38 (20 men, 18 women) mentally retarded adolescents aged 14-19 years (mean IQ = 57) who underwent training for 31 weeks. A single-case research design was used because the subjects varied in age, IQ, and pathological origin of retardation. Data confirm the results of a 1994 study and demonstrate the utility of systematic, diversified training in improving information-processing strategies on the one hand, and raising meta-mnemonic and autoattributional awar

Enhancing the ability of adults with mental retardation to recognize facial expressions of emotion.

The ability to recognize accurately and respond appropriately to facial expressions of emotion is essential for interpersonal interaction. Individuals with mental retardation typically are deficient in these skills. The ability of 7 adults, 1 with severe and 6 with moderate mental retardation, to recognize facial expressions of emotion correctly was assessed. Then, they were taught this skill using a combination of a discrimination training procedure for differentiating facial movements, directed rehearsal, and Ekman and Friesen's "flashing photograph" technique. Their average increase in accu

Comprehension of syntactically indicated sequence by Down's syndrome and other mentally retarded adults.

The ability to comprehend syntactically ordered sequence by Down's syndrome adults and adults with mental retardation of no specific aetiology was studied. Both samples exhibited patterns of comprehension that resembled those of children who are not mentally retarded. However, the Down's syndrome individuals had significantly more difficulty when sequence was indicated by syntax with no supporting extralinguistic context. The Down's syndrome adults appeared to be arrested at an earlier stage of development than the other mentally retarded adults.

The treatment of elopement behavior in a retardate using a graduated levels program.

The present study investigated whether a levels program would effectively reduce the amount of elopement (running-away) behavior demonstrated by an adult with profound mental retardation. The subject resided in an Alternative Intermediate Services (AIS) group home. During baseline data collection, he demonstrated an average of 131 elopements per month. After implementation of the levels program, elopements decreased to 0 within 7 months. At the end of the study, the subject's elopements continued to be maintained at a very low rate.

Performance of institutional retardates on standard and new forms of the Quick Test.

121 institutionalized mentally retarded patients were tested on Forms 1-3 and 4-6 of the Quick Test; IQs were correlated with other IQs available from institution records. The forms of the Quick Test correlated significantly with the more traditional and time-consuming tests of intellectual performance. It was concluded that the Quick Test is an excellent tool for experimenters and educators who need an efficient and reliable estimate of intellectual development.

Object and action naming in adults and aged people with Down syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic condition associated with cognitive and linguistic impairments, presenting specific challenges in aging and an increased risk of cognitive decline. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate naming alterations in adults and older individuals with DS using the Object and Action Naming Battery (OANB) and to identify the influence of age, educational attainment, and degree of intellectual disability (ID) on linguistic performance. METHODS: This study included 26 individuals diagnosed with DS aged ≥20 years, assessed with the Cambridge Examination for Mental Disorders of

Unseen, Ungrieved: Idiocy and the Architecture of Exclusion in Eugenic Institutions.

This essay reexamines institutional segregation during the eugenics era by centering the experiences of individuals labeled "low-grade" or "unimprovable," who have been largely excluded from both public life and historical memory. While scholarship on eugenics has emphasized sterilization, immigration restriction, and the politics of heredity, it has paid comparatively little attention to how significant intellectual disability was discursively and materially constructed within custodial institutions governed by medical and administrative authority. The essay argues that the figure of the "idi
