Ingredients and safety of cellulite creams.

There is virtually no knowledge of the ingredients of cellulite creams in the dermatological literature. In the present study, the ingredients of cellulite creams, the frequency of their use and whether the ingredients have been reported to cause allergy were investigated. In the 32 products tested, 263 ingredients were used. On average each product contained 22 ingredients (range 4 to 31). Botanicals and emollients predominated; altogether 44 different botanicals and 39 different emollients were used in the 32 products. Caffeine, present in 14 products was the most common additive, apparently

Phototherapy and systemic treatments.

A proportion of children and adults with moderate to severe atopic eczema are not adequately controlled with emollients and topical steroids, resulting in significant morbidity and disability. Studies indicate a significant placebo response, so randomized controlled trials of new treatments are vital. This article reviews the evidence for phototherapy and systemic treatments in atopic eczema.

A Successful Treatment of Ostraceous Psoriasis Associated with Psoriatic Arthritis in Children: A Case Report.

Psoriasis may manifest as severe hyperkeratotic lesions resembling an oyster shell called ostraceous psoriasis (OP). This type of psoriasis is extremely rare and is often associated with psoriatic arthritis (PA). Cases of OP associated with PA in children have never been reported before. We reported a 9-year-old girl with hyperkeratotic lesions resembling an oyster shell all over the body accompanied with swelling on joints of both fingers, knee joints, and ankle. Histopathological examination supported the diagnosis of OP. The diagnosis of PA was established according to the Classification Cr

A comparative study of PUVASOL therapy in lichen planus.

BACKGROUND: PUVA therapy is reported to be effective in lichen planus. However, PUVASOL therapy is more easily available in India. AIM: To carry out a three way open comparison of oral PUVASOL therapy with oral metronidazole and with the conventional oral antihistamine plus topical steroid therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-five cases of lichen planus were studied for 12 weeks with three different modalities: 1. Oral metronidazole and topical emollient cream, 2. Oral PUVASOL and topical emollient cream, and 3. Oral cetirizine and topical betamethasone dipropionate cream. Lesions were ass

Know how treatment for childhood eczema.

Eczema cannot be cured, but much can be done both to prevent and alleviate its symptoms in children. Emollients--available as bath oils, soap substitutes and moisturisers--have a vital role in treating dry, scaly skin and tackling the scratch/itch cycle. They should be used daily, and can be administered alongside topical steroids and other treatments.

Management of Local Skin Reactions Caused by 5-FU 4% Cream for the Treatment of Actinic Keratosis: A Delphi Consensus.

INTRODUCTION: Treatments such as 4% 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) cream have demonstrated strong efficacy in lesion clearance of actinic keratosis; however, local skin reactions (LSR) during treatment remain a significant challenge, potentially affecting patient adherence. OBJECTIVE: We sought to build consensus on management of LSR associated with 4% 5-FU using the Delphi methodology. METHODS: Twenty-eight expert dermatologists participated in a 3-round Delphi process. Experts evaluated LSR management strategies, including emollients, antibiotics, steroids, and treatment discontinuation. Agreement

Moisturizers in preventing irritant contact dermatitis: an overview.

Moisturizers, widely used in dermatologic and cosmetic "dry" skin treatments, can improve the skin condition by increasing stratum corneum water content and by other mechanisms. We review the controlled study data that relate to their use in the prevention of irritant contact dermatitis.

Moisturizer effect on irritant dermatitis: an overview.

Moisturizers are empirically used as prevention and treatment of surfactant and irritant dermatitis. Some products state they not only improve barrier function by providing moisturization but also create an environment optimal for healing. Yet, moisturizer clinical efficacy remains a topic of controversy. We reviewed publication from 1992 to 2006 that quantitatively examines moisturizer effectiveness, as an update of our prior overview, Zhai and Maibach in 1998 (2). We intuitively (in a testimonial sense) believe that moisturizers are sometimes effective for preventing and treating irritant de

Treatment of chronic hand eczema with topical anti-inflammatory drugs other than topical corticosteroids.

Chronic hand eczema is a fluctuating, inflammatory, pruritic disease of the hands and wrists that is commonly treated with topical corticosteroids and emollients. In a recent report in The Lancet, Bissonnette et al. demonstrated that delgocitinib cream showed superior efficacy versus a cream vehicle and was well tolerated over 16 weeks in adults with moderate to severe chronic hand eczema.

Post-infectious pityriasis rubra pilaris in pediatric patients.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare skin condition. The etiology of PRP is unknown; however, it has been associated with infections, autoimmune diseases, and neoplasms. Here we describe the cases of 2 pediatric patients with PRP triggered by a respiratory syncytial virus infection concurrently with obstructive bronchial syndrome. PRP resolved after treatment with topical emollients, topical corticosteroids, and calcineurin inhibitors.

Topical non-pharmacological treatment of eczema: an Italian consensus.

Eczematous diseases (contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, hand eczema) are among the most frequent findings in dermatological clinical practice. A large body of evidence exists on structural and functional skin barrier damage in eczematous diseases, and on the importance of interventions aimed to repair such damage. While there is substantial agreement on pharmacological treatment, more sparse data are available on role, indications and usefulness of topical non-pharmacological treatments, despite significant research and progress in the composition and technology of emollients, cleansers an

Western and complementary alternative medicine treatment of uremic pruritus: A literature review.

Uremic pruritus (UP), also called chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP), is a bothersome symptom that causes sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, and reduced quality of life. Pruritus often occurs in patients with end-stage renal disease. There is still no definite treatment for UP due to its unclear pathogenesis. We searched electronic databases (PubMed and Google Scholar) and gathered the latest clinical trials and pilot studies of Western and complementary alternative medicine (CAM) therapies for UP in English. These UP studies were separated into three main groups: systemi

Pityriasis rosea.

Pityriasis rosea is a common, self-limited, scaling disorder of unknown etiology, seen predominantly in young adults. The lesions, typically found on the trunk and proximal extremities, are ovoid, salmon-colored and symmetric. A "herald patch" appears in 70 percent of cases. Variants appear frequently. Papular, urticarial, vesicular or hemorrhagic lesions may be seen. Management with antipruritic lotions, emollients or antihistamines may be necessary to relieve itching.

Congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma: A rare neonatal dermatoses responding to acitretin.

Congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma is a rare and severe form of ichthyosis manifesting in the neonatal age group. We report a child with diffuse peeling of skin and erythroderma presenting on the 2nd day of birth. With aseptic nursing care along with emollients and oral acitretin, the child's quality of life improved remarkably, hence highlighting the point of early and judicious use of acitretin in reducing disease morbidity.

Application of topical gentamicin ointment in the treatment of Nagashima-type palmoplantar keratosis in children with a nonsense mutation.

IMPORTANCE: Nagashima-type palmoplantar keratosis (NPPK) is a hereditary dermatosis mostly caused by a nonsense mutation in SERPINB7. Despite the increasing interest in readthrough gentamicin treatment of NPPK, clinical evidence for this treatment is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide further evidence for the use of topical gentamicin in the treatment of NPPK in children with nonsense mutations. METHODS: We designed a bilaterally controlled study of topical gentamicin ointment. Children diagnosed with NPPK carrying nonsense mutations were enrolled in this study. A 0.1% gentamici

Self-applied topical interventions for melasma: a systematic review and meta-analysis of data from randomized, investigator-blinded clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Melasma is a common dermatological condition. Although its relevance as a skin condition is primarily of a cosmetic nature, it may affect the patient's wellbeing and quality of life. A broad range of treatment options is available, which makes it difficult to choose the most appropriate of those treatments. OBJECTIVES: To summarize and critically appraise evidence from investigator-blinded randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the efficacy and safety of self-applied topical interventions for melasma. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE and the Cochrane CENTRAL trials dat
