Maternal overprotection predicts consistent improvement of self-compassion during mindfulness-based intervention and existential approach: a secondary analysis of the EXMIND study.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we showed that 4-week mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) followed by 4-week existential approach (EXMIND) was as effective for developing self-compassion as 8-week MBI. This study aims to identify the predictors to EXMIND. METHODS: Of the 63 participants who completed the EXMIND group, 60 participants had baseline, 4-week, and 8-week total scores of the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). Of the participants, 49 were female and 11 were male, with a mean age of 48.4 years. We investigated the participants' intervention response patterns, then used analysis of variance to compa

Finding Meaning in Suffering: The Role of Spirituality in Existential Psychotherapy for Emotional Recovery in Palliative Care Across Turkey, China, India, Iran, USA, and Denmark.

Spiritual support is increasingly recognized as a vital component of psychological care in palliative settings, yet its impact on emotional recovery is not fully established. The objective is to systematically review the benefits of integrating spiritual support into psychotherapy for improving emotional recovery in palliative care. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase was conducted (September 1-10, 2024) with no date limits. Eligible studies included original research assessing the effects of spiritual support within psychotherapy among palliative care populations. Two in

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation in Patients at Intermediate and Low Risk Is Not (Yet) the Existential Threat That Surgeons Feared: A Retrospective Analysis of Medicare Claims Data.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, the role of surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in patients who are suitable for both procedures remains controversial. In 2022, new Items were added to the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) to allow patients at intermediate and low risk with appropriate private health insurance to undergo TAVI. The Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand supported these changes whereas the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons opposed them. The aim of this study was to document subsequent privat

Supporting the Integration of the Existential Dimension Into Clinical Practice: Health Care Providers' Experiences With a Meaning-Making Synopsis of Patients Living Long-Term With Incurable Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The existential dimension is a key aspect of palliative care but is often insufficiently integrated in clinical practice. We developed a structured meaning-making conversation for patients living long-term with incurable cancer led by a spiritual counsellor to support patients' meaning-making process. To support the integration of the existential dimension, a synopsis of patient's sources of meaning and existential needs was shared afterwards with the referring health care provider (HCP) via the electronic health record. AIMS: This study explored HCPs' experiences with this meanin

Mental health-related, existential, and biological factors are associated with the desire to hasten death in Mexican cancer patients undergoing palliative care: A single-center study.

INTRODUCTION: The wish to hasten death (WTHD) is a clinically significant phenomenon that arises from complex suffering. It has been predominantly studied in Caucasian populations, emphasizing the importance of gaining more diverse cultural perspectives. This study explores the factors associated with the WTHD in Mexican cancer patients receiving palliative care from one academic center, with a specific focus on its connection to dignity.". PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study, a cross-sectional research conducted between October 12, 2023, and August 30, 2024, involved patients with confirmed canc

Based on the relationship between anxiety of existential meaninglessness, hope level, and fear of progression, explored the effect of preoperative nursing with Orem theory in the senile cataract population.

BACKGROUND: Cataracts, characterized by a decrease in vision due to the clouding of the lens, can progress to blindness in advanced stages. The rising incidence of cataract cases has led to a significant number of patients experiencing negative emotions associated with vision loss, thereby diminishing their quality of life. In clinical practice, it is imperative for healthcare professionals to consider the psychological well-being of cataract patients. Currently, there is a scarcity of research focusing on psychological evaluations, such as assessing feelings of meaninglessness among individua

Romeo swipes Juliet left!? Problematic online dating app use and problematic pornography consumption are associated with a weaker sense of existential meaning in romantic love.

BACKGROUND: Although prior studies have examined the psycho-socio-sexual outcomes associated with problematic engagement with online dating apps and pornography, these behaviors remain largely unexplored from an existential perspective. Romantic love can also be viewed through an existential lens (e.g., contributing to one's sense of essence). This study investigated the relatively understudied relationships between problematic online dating app use, problematic pornography consumption, and existential perceptions of romantic love. METHODS: A total of 664 Iranian adults (Mage = 26.4, SDage =

The consequences of the new European reclassification of non-invasive brain stimulation devices and the medical device regulations pose an existential threat to research and treatment: An invited opinion paper.

A significant amount of European basic and clinical neuroscience research includes the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and low intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), mainly transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Two recent changes in the EU regulations, the introduction of the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) (2017/745) and the Annex XVI have caused significant problems and confusions in the brain stimulation field. The negative consequences of the MDR for non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) have been largely overlooked and until today, have not been cons

Changes in the sexual self-schema of women with a history of childhood sexual abuse following expressive writing treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual self-schemas are cognitive generalizations about the sexual self that influence the processing of sexually pertinent information and guide sexual behavior. Until recently sexual self-schemas were exclusively assessed with self-report instruments. Recent research using the meaning extraction method, an inductive method of topic modeling, identified 7 unique themes of sexual self-schemas: family and development, virginity, abuse, relationship, sexual activity, attraction, and existentialism from essays of 239 women (Stanton, Boyd, Pulverman, & Meston, 2015). In the current stud

Influence of psychosocial adaptation on existential distress among young breast cancer survivors in the rehabilitation period: An analysis of the chain mediating effects of social support and psychological resilience.

This study investigated the influence of psychosocial adaptation on existential distress among young breast cancer survivors during the rehabilitation period, with a focus on the chain-mediating roles of social support and psychological resilience. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 390 young Chinese breast cancer survivors (aged 18-49 years, within 5 years post-treatment) recruited from tertiary hospitals. Participants completed standardized measures assessing psychosocial adaptation (PAIS-SR), social support (PSSS), psychological resilience (CD-RISC10), and existential distress (DS-

Quality of life as medicine III. A qualitative analysis of the effect of a five-day intervention with existential holistic group therapy or a quality of life course as a modern rite of passage.

Existential group therapy seems to be a very efficient way of inducing the holistic state of healing, described in the holistic process theory of healing. We have designed a series of four quality of life (QOL) and health courses of 5-days duration called "Philosophy of Life that Heals--Courses in QOL and Personal Development". The four courses are meant to be taken over four consecutive years. They contain training in philosophy of life and existential theory as well as exercises in holding: awareness, respect, care, acknowledgment, and acceptance. The courses teach the participants respect,

Existential Well-Being Mediates the Relationship Between Religious Well-Being and Mental Health as Well as Quality of Life in Polish Chronic Pain Patients: Longitudinal Pilot Study.

Chronic pain is a common medical challenge in Poland. Its impact is particularly significant because it affects all dimensions of patients' lives. Interestingly, the psychological and spiritual dimensions of quality of life appear to be closely intertwined. There is a scarcity of research explaining the beneficial or detrimental roles of religious coping on well-being in chronic pain patients. However, research on other populations indicates the importance of the existential factor within the two-dimensional spiritual well-being theory. We hypothesize that religious well-being is indirectly li

Existential distress in advanced cancer: study protocol of a pragmatic randomized controlled trial of a short-term psychodynamic therapy (ORPHYS) compared to usual psycho-oncological treatment (TAU).

BACKGROUND: As improvements in anti-cancer treatments have extended survival, patients with advanced cancer and their family caregivers face existential tension between engaging in life and coping with uncertainty about illness trajectory and the course of treatment. For a subgroup, this tension is associated with overwhelming fear and existential distress. Such adjustment difficulties may increase the risk of mental disorders, poor quality of life, and suicidality, and impair prognostic awareness and patient-clinician communication. Despite growing interest in open conversations about end-of-

Trauma blocking or resource buffering? Occupational stress, burnout, and existential anxiety in teachers bereaved during the COVID-19 pandemic: the domain-specific effect of work-family boundary flexibility.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic left deep psychological scars on teachers who lost loved ones. This population bore a dual burden-profound grief while fulfilling professional duties-yet their psychological processes remain understudied. Integrating conservation of resources theory with existential psychology, this study examined the relationship between occupational stress and existential anxiety in pandemic-bereaved teachers, the mediating role of burnout, and the differential functioning of four work-family boundary flexibility dimensions, proposing the trauma blocking hypothesis and repor

Interconnections across physical, psychological, existential, and health-related quality of life patient-reported outcomes in adults with chronic medical conditions: Baseline findings from the eMPower randomized controlled trial.

Individuals living with chronic illness commonly experience co-occurring physical, psychological, and existential symptoms that cluster and reinforce one another, contributing to functional decline and distress. Yet, frailty and existential distress have rarely been examined alongside psychological and physical symptoms, and few studies have mapped how these symptoms interrelate across chronic conditions. This study used baseline patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) from the eMPower randomized controlled trial to examine interconnections among symptoms across physical, psychological, and

"Invisible, you are letting go of a lot, and you would do it again": a qualitative interview study of the existential thoughts, feelings, and agency of healthy siblings with a sister or brother in palliative care in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Having a sibling is one of the most significant relationships in life. Living with a life-threateningly ill sister or brother receiving palliative care affects the healthy siblings’ life in several ways. Healthy siblings often feel overlooked and neglected and withhold their thoughts, emotions, and fears to shield their parents or themselves, which may cause emotions of fear, anger, anxiety, and depression. Research is limited concerning existential dimensions of life in healthy siblings living with a sister or brother with a life-threatening condition, especially when it comes to

"The less they talk about it, the more we think about it": a qualitative interview study of the existential agency of children and young people when they are relatives of a family member dying from cancer in a hospice in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Young relatives often grapple with a range of complex emotions, including fear, loneliness, and isolation, which are compounded by a lack of support and recognition. These experiences are deeply existential in nature, affecting their sense of meaning, identity, and emotional well-being. Despite the significance of these experiences, there remains a lack of scientific knowledge regarding the existential dimensions of the lives of young relatives facing the imminent death of a family member, particularly from the perspective of children and young people, whose voices and experiences
