Caudal dysplasia and femoral hypoplasia-unusual facies syndrome: different manifestations of the same disorder?

The Caudal Dysplasia syndrome and the Femoral Hypoplasia-Unusual Facies syndrome have been reported to be more frequent among infants of diabetic mothers. We report a newborn girl who presented with features compatible with both syndromes. The possibility that both conditions represent different manifestations of the same disorder is discussed.

Growth retardation, dysmorphic facies and minor malformations following massive exposure to phenobarbitone in utero.

A syndrome of facial dysmorphism, pre- and postnatal growth deficiency, developmental delay and minor malformations is described in two siblings. The facial anomalies consist of short nose with low nasal bridge, hypertelorism, epicanthic folds, ptosis of eyelid (patient 2), lowset ears, wide mouth with protruding lips and relative prognathism. Patient 2 in addition had a cleft soft palate and a hypoplastic phalanx of his fifth fingers. Both siblings were exposed to extraordinary high levels of phenobarbitone (5.0-8.6 mg/100 ml) in utero. The same clinical picture has been reported by others fo

The Manifestation of Congenital Hypoplasia of the Depressor Anguli Oris: A Case Report of Asymmetric Crying Facies.

Congenital hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle (CHDAOM) is a relatively uncommon condition that causes asymmetric crying facies (ACF) in newborns. Although it primarily presents as a cosmetic issue, it could have implications in clinical practice. We report a case involving a seven-month-old girl who presented with asymmetric crying and other related clinical features. The patient exhibited lateral deviation of the mouth angle during smiling and crying but showed no additional clinical abnormalities. There were no signs of generalized facial muscle weakness or paralysis. The diagnos

Generation of a mouse model of the neurodevelopmental disorder with dysmorphic facies and distal limb anomalies syndrome.

Heterozygous variants in bromodomain and plant homeodomain containing transcription factor (BPTF) cause the neurodevelopmental disorder with dysmorphic facies and distal limb anomalies (NEDDFL) syndrome (MIM#617755) characterized by intellectual disability, speech delay and postnatal microcephaly. BPTF functions within nucleosome and remodeling factor (NURF), a complex comprising sucrose non-fermenting like (SNF2L), an Imitation SWItching (ISWI) chromatin remodeling protein encoded by the SWI/SNF related, matrix associated, actin dependent regulator of chromatin, subfamily a, member 1 (SMARCA1

[Asymmetric crying facies and vocal cord paralysis accompanied by congenital heart disease in an infant].

A female infant was admitted to the hospital due to perioral cyanosis two hours after birth. The infant was born at the gestational age of 35 weeks by cesarean section with a birth weight of 2 400 g. Physical examination revealed wry mouth to the left side while crying, small auricles, and high palatal arch; fibrolaryngoscopy suggested bilateral vocal cord paralysis; echocardiography suggested ventricular septal defect; single nucleotide polymorphism testing showed 22q11.21 microdeletion. Therefore, the infant was given a definite diagnosis of asymmetric crying facies syndrome accompanied by 2

Late Diagnosis of Narcolepsy With Cataplexy: A Novel Case of Cataplectic Facies Presenting in an Elderly Woman.

Cataplectic facies is an unusual feature described in children with narcolepsy and cataplexy. The typical manifestations of cataplectic facies consist of repetitive mouth opening, tongue protrusion, and ptosis. An interesting observation is that the usual emotional triggers associated with cataplexy such as laughter and joking are not always present, thus hampering diagnosis of the underlying syndrome. Cataplectic facies is thought to be a phenomenon observed in the early stages of narcolepsy type 1 and is thought to disappear by the time the patient reaches puberty. We present a unique case o

Ehlers-Danlos features with progeroid facies and mild mental retardation. Further delineation of the syndrome.

A syndrome characterized by progeroid facies, multiple nevi, mild mental retardation, skin hyperextensibility, bruisability, moderate skin fragility, joint hypermobility principally in digits, is described in two unrelated patients. Electron microscopy of the skin showed some fragmentation of the elastic fibers' portion and moderate electrodensity in the amorphous portion. Since a practically identical constellation of clinical features was previously reported in three patients, the individualization of a distinct connective tissue disorder, probably autosomal dominant, with variable expressiv

Klippel-Feil Syndrome With Isolated Facial Dysmorphism: A Clinical Conundrum With Resemblance to Adenoid Facies.

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a triad comprising cervical spine fusion, a low posterior hairline, and constrained neck movement. This triad is not universally present. The most frequent accompaniment is Sprengel's scapula deformity. According to the Feil classification, Class 1 (C1) is an immense fusion of many cervical vertebrae, Class 2 (C2) is a fusion of one or two vertebrae only, and Class 3 (C3) is coupled with thoracic and lumbar spinal vertebral fusion in addition to the fusion of the cervical vertebrae. Clarke's categorization of KFS includes other associated anomalies. The different

Mowat-Wilson Syndrome as a Differential Diagnosis in Patients with Congenital Heart Defects and Dysmorphic Facies.

Mowat-Wilson syndrome is a rare, autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by distinctive facial gestalt and intellectual disability that is often associated with microcephaly, seizures and multiple congenital anomalies, mainly heart defects. More than 350 patients and 180 genetic variants in the ZEB2 gene, have been reported with an estimated frequency of 1 per 70,000 births. Here we report a Colombian female patient with facial gestalt, intellectual disability, microcephaly, congenital heart defects, hypothyroidism and middle ear defect associated with the nonsense pathoge

Phenotypic expansion of the BPTF-related neurodevelopmental disorder with dysmorphic facies and distal limb anomalies.

Neurodevelopmental disorder with dysmorphic facies and distal limb anomalies (NEDDFL), defined primarily by developmental delay/intellectual disability, speech delay, postnatal microcephaly, and dysmorphic features, is a syndrome resulting from heterozygous variants in the dosage-sensitive bromodomain PHD finger chromatin remodeler transcription factor BPTF gene. To date, only 11 individuals with NEDDFL due to de novo BPTF variants have been described. To expand the NEDDFL phenotypic spectrum, we describe the clinical features in 25 novel individuals with 20 distinct, clinically relevant varia

Clinical and microscopic hair features of griscelli syndrome associated with asymmetric crying facies in an infant.

Griscelli syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by immunodeficiency and partial albinism. Asymmetric crying facies (ACF) is caused by congenital hypoplasia or agenesis of the depressor anguli oris muscle. Asymmetric crying facies may be isolated or it may be associated with various anomalies. We report a 3-month-old Turkish boy who had clinical and microscopic hair features of GS associated with ACF. To the best of our knowledge, this is the 1st case of this association to be reported in the literature.

Syndrome of microcephaly, deafness/malformed ears, mental retardation and peculiar facies in a mother and son.

We report a mother and son who have a microcephaly with a characteristic dysmorphic face. Prominent manifestations include facial asymmetry, prominent glabella, deafness, low-set, cup-shaped ears, thick, protruding lower lip, micrognathia, and mental retardation. We conclude that these patients have a previously undescribed type of genetic microcephaly. The mother has become normocephalic and we would not have been able to diagnose her condition without her childhood photographs. Such photographs are essential in the recognition of familial syndromes.

Asymmetric crying facies with microcephaly and mental retardation. An autosomal dominant syndrome with variable expressivity.

An infant boy with asymmetric crying facies, microcephaly, developmental retardation and failure to thrive is reported. His two siblings died in the newborn period because of complex congenital heart defects. The mother and the maternal grandmother have asymmetric crying facies, microcephaly and normal intelligence. A maternal aunt has severe physical and mental retardation, facial asymmetry, microcephaly, and cleft palate. This family allows an expansion of the spectrum of malformations associated with asymmetric crying facies and suggests autosomal dominant inheritance with variable expressi

Machine learning with hyperparameter optimization applied in facies-supported permeability modeling in carbonate oil reservoirs.

Most carbonate reservoirs exhibit heterogeneous pore distribution, whereby the matrix displays low permeability, thus impeding the flow of oil. On the other hand, highly permeable fractures function as the main flow conduits within such reservoirs. Permeability measurements are obtained from core and well test analysis, which are too expensive and not available for many wells. Therefore, accurate permeability prediction is a vital step in developing an efficient field development plan, as it plays a pivotal role in the accurate distribution of 3D petrophysical properties throughout a reservoir

Gaucher disease type I: analysis of two cases with thalassemic facies and pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas.

Here we report two unusual patients with Gaucher disease type I. Both girls admitted with hepatosplenomegaly, growth retardation, and anemia at four and 2.5 years of age, and Gaucher cells were seen on bone marrow aspirates. Thalassemic face was first noted at 8 and 11 years of age, respectively, with frontal bossing and maxillary hypertrophia. Although they had unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia, high reticulocytes, polychromasia, and normoblasts on peripheral smear, other laboratory tests for hemolytic disease were negative. Radiological examination revealed typical bone involvement of Gaucher

Familial asymmetric crying facies. Its occurrence secondary to hypoplasia of the anguli oris depressor muscles.

Asymmetric crying facies is a common neonatal problem with multiple causes. Asymmetric crying facies occurred in a newborn, secondary to familial hypoplasia of the anguli oris depressor muscle. The differential diagnosis of asymmetric crying facies should include this genetic cause.

Identification of De Novo ZBTB18 Variant in a Patient With Global Developmental Delay, Seizures, and Juvenile Facies.

BACKGROUND: ZBTB18 encodes a C2H2-type zinc finger protein that acts as a transcriptional repressor and is essential for neurodevelopment. Variants in ZBTB18 are associated with intellectual developmental disorder, autosomal dominant 22 (MRD22). Patients with MRD22 present with intellectual disability (ID), corpus callosum anomalies, hypotonia, microcephaly, growth problems, epilepsy, and variable facial dysmorphism. METHODS: Whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed to identify the molecular etiology. Sanger sequencing was used to validate the variant. Clinical assessments were conducted us

Fusion of vertebrae, diaphragmatic hernia and unusual facies in a girl: a possible further case of Mathieu syndrome.

Mathieu et al., (1993) reported a family in which a male adult and his son were both affected by unusual facies, cleft palate, congenital brevicollis, diaphragmatic hernia, gastro-oesophageal reflux, and cervical vertebral fusion. Since then, to our knowledge, no other similar cases have been reported. Here we describe a girl presenting with facial features similar to the Mathieu's patients. The association of cervical vertebral fusion, diaphragmatic hernia, and severe gastro-oesophageal reflux seems to confirm this syndrome.
