BACKGROUND: The proximal interphalange joint (PIP) is fundamental for the functional nature of the hand. The contracture in flexion of the PIP, secondary to traumatisms or illnesses leads to an important functional loss. The use of correcting splints is the common procedure for treating this problem. Its functioning is based on the application of a small load and a prolonged stress which can be dynamic, static progressive or static serial. It is important that the therapist has a splint available which can release a constant and sufficient force to correct the contracture in flexion. The authors report an unusual case of multiple carpometacarpal joint dislocations of the ulnar four fingers, treated by closed reduction and fixation with percutaneous Kirschner-wires. A plaster splint with the wrist in neutral position was applied for six weeks. Active physiotherapy of the fingers was started from four weeks after surgery, with a satisfactory result.

BACKGROUND: The Stener lesion of the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint of the thumb is characterized by an interposition of the adductor aponeurosis between a distally avulsed ligament and its insertion into the base of the proximal phalanx. Stener-like lesions of the MP joint of the finger have been previously reported in only a few cases.
METHODS: The authors experienced 38 cases of collateral ligament injuries of the MP joint of the finger. The two most frequently affected sites were the radial side of the little finger (21 cases) and the radial side of the ri

We present a case of chronic, recurrent dislocation of the distal interphalangeal joint of the little finger after traumatic dislocation. Intraoperative findings showed complete avulsion of the volar plate from the base of the distal phalanx and laxity of the ulnar collateral ligament. The volar plate was reattached by the suture anchor technique and reinforced by the ulnar half of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon.

Frequency-domain optical imaging systems have shown great promise for characterizing blood oxygenation, hemodynamics, and other physiological parameters in human and animal tissues. However, most of the frequency domain systems presented so far operate with source modulation frequencies below 150 MHz. At these low frequencies, their ability to provide accurate data for small tissue geometries such as encountered in imaging of finger joints or rodents is limited. Here, we present a new system that can provide data up to 1 GHz using an intensity modulated charged coupled device camera. After dat

An exostosis around the interphalangeal joint can cause deformity of a finger. We present two children with deviated fingers as a result of exostoses that developed near the proximal interphalangeal joints and were successfully treated by resection and closed wedge osteotomy.

UNLABELLED: Palmar dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the long finger represents a rare event. The first case was published by Mc Laughlin in 1965, and only nine other cases have been reported. We present one more case and discuss the mechanisms of these dislocations and treatment.
CASE REPORT: A 22-year-old biker presented with complex injuries of his right hand after a road accident.Examination revealed an extensive palmar wound on the ulnar side of his right hand, with another on the MCP joint of the little finger, and shortening of the little and the ring fingers. Any a

Ligamentous injuries to multiple interphalangeal joints of an extremity have seldom been reported. We treated a patient with multiple ligamentous injuries in the little finger. Manual reduction of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint and surgical repair of the radial collateral ligament were performed to correct multidimensional joint instability and to allow for rehabilitation.

A trigger finger is not always caused by a stenosing tenosynovitis, but may rarely be due to an internal derangement of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint. Several different mechanisms may be responsible for this intrinsic joint locking. A patient is described with intermittent locking of an index MCP joint due to an osteophyte tethering the radial accessory collateral ligament. Removal of the osteophyte solved the problem. Awareness of this condition may prevent unnecessary exploration of the proximal pulley and tendon sheath.

BACKGROUND: Cartilage damage in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is commonly evaluated by joint space narrowing (JSN) on conventional radiograph (CR). Cross-sectional studies suggest that ultrasound (US) can directly assess finger-joint cartilage damage; however, whether it can sufficiently evaluate cartilage changes over time remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate temporal changes in cartilage damage in patients with RA using US.
DESIGN: A single-center, retrospective observational study.
METHODS: Fifty-three patients with RA underwent US scans of finger joints and CR of bot

Molecular conformation in n-alk-1-ynes (CnA) is conventionally simplified to an all-planar structure. We report a comprehensive quantum chemical analysis revealing two near-isoenergetic rotamers at the acetylenic terminus: planar ( C s ) and skewed ( C 1 ). The high, symmetric rotational energy barrier ( ≈ 150 meV) arises from unique steric relief near the s p center coupled with electronic stabilization of C 1 . This creates a unique kinetic profile: a Quantum "Trigger Finger" ( α rotation) that enforces an ≈ 50 % : 50 % C s / C 1 ensemble, sharply contrasting

BACKGROUND: Finger and wrist joint range of motion (ROM) measurement are key parameters of the hand examination and contribute to the diagnosis and monitoring of hand pathology. Technology-based ROM measurement tools, particularly software-based systems such as image analysis systems or augmented reality--based measurement, have potential to facilitate efficient ROM measurement in both virtual and in-person settings.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to provide some knowledge translation of available and prospective technologies from developer to clinician literature. Specifically, this a

Type 1 finger metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint locking is characterized by maintained flexion of the MCP, with a lack of active and passive extension. Metacarpophalangeal joint locking is rare but has several identified causes, most commonly involving a radial-sided osteophyte. We report a case of right middle finger ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) entrapment characterized as type 1 MCP joint locking. The physical examination demonstrated that the right middle finger was locked in flexion at 60° at the MCP joint. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a possible tear of the distal attach

A 40-year-old female noticed edema of the lower limbs in March 1995. Nephrotic syndrome due to membranous nephropathy was diagnosed and administration of high-dose corticosteroids resulted in incomplete remission. Progressively enlarging, red scaling skin lesions developed concomitantly from the scalp to the extremities. Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) was diagnosed in 1996 in the Department of Dermatology at Sapporo Medical University hospital. Various treatments proved ineffective. Arthritis of the finger joints developed in July 1999, and proteinuria recurred in April 2000. She was admitted

Finger joint injuries such as sprains, avulsions, jams, and dislocations can occur with contact and noncontact sports. Recognition and treatment of these injuries is necessary to avoid prolonged or permanent impairment. Many finger joint injuries can be treated conservatively with splinting and occupational therapy. Injuries such as 'mallet finger,' profundus tendon avulsions, large-fragment fracture-dislocations or other injuries with incongruity after reduction, and open extensor-mechanism injuries may require operative treatment. Operative treatment for complete collateral ligament ruptures

Leprosy (Hansen's disease) is a multisystem, chronic infectious disease that still exists. It is caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Musculoskeletal features are non-consistent and can lead to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. We report the case of a 23-year-old male with the right small finger (RSF) proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint arthropathy related to leprosy. This was his first encounter with seeking medical advice regarding his condition. The patient was diagnosed and treated with surgical debridement, volar plate arthroplasty for the affected proximal interphalangeal joint, and the recomme

Despite recent advances in medical technology, treatment of chronic osteomyelitis in the small joint of the hand remains challenging. Here, we exploited hybrid biodegradable hydrogel/microparticle/polycaprolactone (PCL) sacs for finger joint interpositional arthroplasty via electrospraying and rotational molding techniques. Degradable Pluronic F127, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), and PCL were starting materials for the hydrogels, microparticles, and sac, respectively. Vancomycin, ceftazidime, and lidocaine were the embedded pharmaceuticals. The in vitro and in vivo drug release behavior

Background: Finger joint arthrodesis is a common operation which has many indications including acute trauma, post traumatic condition, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid joint deformity. The objective of this study was to evaluate factors which may influence bone union in arthrodesis of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint of the fingers and interphalangeal (IP) joint of the thumb. Methods: A total of 310 arthrodesis (221 finger DIP and 89 thumb IP joint) were analysed retrospectively. We used variables related to the patient and to the operative technique in univariable and multivariable regre

BACKGROUND: Finger injuries are common in the sport of hurling. Injury to the little finger distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) often occurs when a high dropping ball impacts on the outstretched finger. The little finger contributes to approximately 15% of grip strength. Injury therefore results in reduced grip strength and may impair the ability of players to grip or catch a ball.
METHODS: Six elite hurlers with post-traumatic arthritis of their non-dominant little finger DIPJ underwent arthrodesis in 30 degrees of flexion. Kirchner wires were inserted for up to 8 weeks to achieve fusion of
