BACKGROUND: Endoscopic posterior cervical foraminotomy (EPCF) is an effective surgical treatment method for single-level cervical radiculopathy. However, only few studies have used the technique for two-level EPCF via a single stab incision.
METHOD: In this study, the minimally invasive surgical method was used for two-level cervical radiculopathy, and useful information regarding perioperative care was presented.
CONCLUSION: EPCF is an alternative treatment for patients with symptoms of adjacent two-level lesions of the cervical spine, and such procedure is advantageous as it can be perform

Percutaneous posterior full-endoscopic cervical foraminotomy and discectomy (PECFD) is recognized as a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR). However, the potential mechanisms of the degenerative changes and postoperative recurrence after PECFD are unclear. In this study, a finite element (FE) analysis and radiological assessment were performed to evaluate the biomechanical effects after PECFD. The FE model indicated that the ROM and IDP of C5-C6 increased significantly after PECFD in the extension loading. The radiological evaluation re

BACKGROUND: Microscopic anterior cervical foraminotomy (MACF) is a surgical technique for unilateral cervical radiculopathy that preserves segmental motion and avoids adjacent segmental degeneration, but little is known of its long-term outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective minimum 10-year follow-up study was conducted on patients treated by 1 surgeon. Clinical outcomes were assessed using a visual analog scale of neck and arm pain, Neck Disability Index, and Odom criteria. Surgical outcomes were assessed using additional procedure rates. Radiologic outcomes were estimated by measuring disc heig

A retrospective study was conducted on 67 patients undergoing posterior cervical foraminotomy (PCF) for unilateral intraforaminal soft and hard disc disease. Neurologic impairment, employment, and severity of associated signs were assessed preoperatively and at a 3.1-year average follow-up (range, 1.5-7 years). Diminution or complete disappearance of radicular symptoms was observed in 62 cases (93%), 3 months to 3 years after surgery. Minimal neurologic deficits persisted in 5 cases (7%). Neck pain improved in 62 cases, remained unchanged in three, and progressed in two cases with severe preop

Eighty-four consecutive patients with posterolateral cervical disk herniation treated by keyhole foraminotomy between 1980 and 1987 were reviewed. Radicular pain was the most common presenting complaint. Weakness was present in 59 patients. Sixty patients were available for long-term follow up, averaging 6.1 years. Fifty-six patients' results were graded as excellent. Three patients had good results and one fair result was noted. There were no poor results. Preoperative pain symptoms were relieved in all patients. There were no significant complications. The posterolateral keyhole foraminotomy

OBJECTIVE Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with or without partial uncovertebral joint resection (UVR) and posterior keyhole foraminotomy are established operative procedures to treat cervical disc degeneration and radiculopathy. Studies have demonstrated reliable results with each procedure, but none have compared the change in neuroforaminal area between indirect and direct decompression techniques. The purpose of this study was to determine which cervical decompression method most consistently increases neuroforaminal area and how that area is affected by neck position. METHOD

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effects of posterior percutaneous full-endoscopic cervical foraminotomy in patients with osseous foraminal stenosis.
METHODS: Nine patients with osseous foraminal stenosis underwent surgery using the posterior percutaneous full-endoscopic cervical foraminotomy technique and received follow-up care for 1 year. The visual analog scale score, neck disability index, and modified Macnab criteria were recorded at the last follow-up. All patients underwent three-dimensional computed tomography of the cervical spine, which was reviewed within 1 week postoperatively.

Monosegmental cervical disc herniation can be removed either by dorsal foraminotomy and sequesterectomy (Frykholm's method) or by a ventral approach with extensive removal of the affected disc with subsequent segmental fusion (modified Cloward's method). The choice of method largely depends on the surgeon's individual preference and experience. We evaluated the neurological outcomes of both surgical methods in a retrospective series of 100 consecutive patients (50 male, 50 female; mean age=47.7 years) who underwent surgery within a 3-year period. Fifty-one patients (30 male, 21 female; mean ag

INTRODUCTION: Degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS) is a common cause of pain in dogs, with lumbosacral foraminal stenosis (LSFS) frequently contributing to clinical signs through spinal nerve root compression. Conventional surgical approaches for foraminal decompression can be invasive and technically challenging. This study aimed to develop a lateral full-endoscopic lumbosacral foraminotomy (LELF) technique and evaluate its feasibility, safety, and effectiveness in dogs.
METHODS: LELF was first established in two large-breed dog cadavers, followed by clinical assessment in three dogs dia

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Posterior cervical foraminotomy (PCF) is a motion-sparing treatment for cervical radiculopathy with rates of symptomatic pain relief similar to anterior cervical diskectomy in patients with persistent symptoms despite nonsurgical management. Although the operation is effective in well-selected patients, some who undergo PCF do not show significant symptomatic improvement, and objective radiographic parameters to identify these patients would assist with operative planning. We sought to determine the radiographic, demographic, and operative factors that are associated

INTRODUCTION: Surgical repair of large cleft palates is challenging and is associated with high postoperative fistula rates. Midline tension is a critical factor in fistula formation. Foraminotomy enables increased medial mobilization of the palatal flaps, particularly in cases in which standard palatal closure would otherwise result in excessive midline tension; however, this procedure carries a risk of neurovascular pedicle injury and subsequent flap necrosis. In this study, we present our surgical technique for piezoelectric palatine foraminotomy to facilitate palatal flap mobilization and

A 73-year-old woman complained of right medial side of scapular pain associated with winged scapula to miss without observing the back in minute detail. Additional treatment was required due to overlooking caused by insufficient examination. We performed micro-endoscopic foraminotomy that provided the disappearance of scapular pain and improvement of winged scapula in relatively early. It was commonly said that winged scapula is an extremely rare condition that causes dysfunction of the upper extremities. We suggest that there are the meaning of winged scapula in diagnosis and the importance o

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy and feasibility of posterolateral percutaneous endoscopic lumbar foraminotomy (PELF) for foraminal or lateral exit zone stenosis of the L5-S1 level in the awake patient. Twelve consecutive patients with L5-S1 foraminal stenosis and associated leg pain underwent PELF between May 2001 and July 2002. Under fluoroscopic guidance, posterolateral endoscopic foraminal decompression was performed using a bone reamer, endoscopic forceps, and a laser. Using this new technique, the authors removed part of the hypertrophied superior facet, thickened

STUDY DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine the impact of the learning curve for endoscopic cervical foraminotomy for clinical outcomes and patient safety.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Endoscopic cervical foraminotomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique emerging in the literature for surgical management of cervical radiculopathy without the use of open incision. The adoption of endoscopic cervical foraminotomy may be hindered by the learning curve, although no review and meta-analysis exists to date on the topic.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is the gold standard treatment for this cervical radiculopathy. Posterior endoscopic cervical foraminotomy (PECF), an effective alternative to ACDF, is becoming widely used by an increasing number of surgeons. However, comparisons of the clinical outcomes of ACDF and PECF remain poorly explored. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare visual analog scale (VAS)-arm scores, VAS-neck scores, neck disability index (NDI) scores, reoperation, and complications in PECF and ACDF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We comprehensively searche

Degenerative lumbosacral stenosis in dogs frequently involves L7-S1 foraminal stenosis and L7 nerve root compression. Surgical techniques to decompress the L7 nerve root include foraminotomy and intervertebral distraction. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of foraminotomy and intervertebral distraction on the total, cranial, and caudal compartmental volumes of the L7-S1 intervertebral neurovascular foramen (NF). CT images were obtained from eight canine lumbosacral (L5-CD1) specimens in the following sequential conditions: native spine (1), after dorsal laminectomy and part
