Frostbite and Cold Agglutinin Disease: Coexistence of Two Entities Leading to Poor Clinical Outcomes.

An 83-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department for a 7-day history of fatigue and progressive cyanosis in the feet and hands after cold exposure despite physical protective measures. Upon arrival, the patient presented with necrotic cutaneous lesions in both hands and distal lower extremities. Upon admission, hemoglobin was 7.6 g/dL and laboratory tests were consistent with cold agglutinin disease (CAD), the presence of monoclonal IgM, and flow cytometry consistent with lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma, but MYD88 L265P mutation was negative. The patient required blood transfusion, res

Frostbite in Northeastern China: Risk factors for amputation and readmission burden - A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Frostbite leads to significant morbidity, yet comprehensive studies from Northeast China are limited. This study aimed to characterize the clinical features of frostbite inpatients, identify risk factors for amputation, and assess the burden and patterns of readmission. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study analyzed 252 frostbite admissions (2001-2023). Descriptive statistics, t-tests/chi-square tests, correlation analyses, Firth penalized maximum-likelihood logistic regression, and multiple linear regression were used. Readmission patterns and costs were evaluated. RES

Clinical course and management of extremity frostbite in populations under forced movement in border regions.

BACKGROUND: Frostbite is a serious cold injury that can progress to deep tissue damage and even amputation. The increasing number of cases among refugee and migrant populations who are forcibly mobile in border regions necessitates a detailed evaluation of clinical course and risk factors. This study aimed to assess the demographic characteristics, clinical course, laboratory findings, and treatment outcomes of patients presenting with frostbite-related extremity injuries. METHODS: This retrospective study included a total of 154 patients who presented with a clinically confirmed diagnosis of

Early clinical predictors of amputation in frostbite: injury depth and extent for admission risk stratification.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of patients at high risk of amputation remains a major challenge in frostbite management, particularly in resource-limited settings where advanced imaging may not be readily available. We aimed to identify admission predictors of amputation in a predominantly migrant frostbite cohort and secondarily evaluated the prognostic value of the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients admitted with frostbite to a tertiary referral hospital in eastern Turkey b

Case Report: Frostbite in the tropics: abdominal pedicled flap reconstruction to prevent the metacarpal hand.

The reconstructive salvage of a severely frostbitten hand in a tropical setting presents a unique challenge. We report a 59-year-old male who sustained extensive frostbite to the face, ears and bilateral hands following a Mount Everest ascent. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) was initiated during demarcation to optimise tissue viability. Following demarcation, dry gangrene of the right hand required amputation, revealing viable 1.5-2 cm proximal phalangeal stumps in all five digits. To avoid a non-functional metacarpal hand, reconstruction aimed to preserve digital length and metacarpophalange

Keep Cool but Don't Freeze: The Influence of William J. Mills Jr. on the Treatment of Frostbite.

Dr William J. Mills Jr., an Alaskan orthopedic surgeon, helped establish the current protocols for frostbite treatment and changed a dogma used for more than 140 years that was established by Napoleon's surgeon general of the army, Baron Dominique-Jean Larrey. During Napoleon's 1812 siege of Moscow, Larrey noticed the destructive effects of using open fire heat for warming frozen body parts, so he suggested rubbing snow or immersion in cold water. Dr Mills treated many cold injuries during his medical career. After setting up his medical practice in Anchorage, Alaska, he realized the inefficie

Ultrasound-Guided Posterior Tibial Nerve Block for Frostbite of the Plantar Surfaces: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Frostbite is a painful condition that requires rapid identification and wound care to optimize outcomes. The posterior tibial nerve (PTN) block, however, has yet to be described in the literature for pain control of frostbite injuries on the plantar surfaces. CASE SERIES: In this case series we discuss three patients who presented with bilateral frostbite on the plantar surfaces. Ultrasound-guided PTN blocks were performed on these patients and pain control was achieved in under 10 minutes, facilitating burn care. No patient experienced adverse effects. All patients had been sch

Social Determinants of Poor Outcomes Following Frostbite Injury: A Study of the National Inpatient Sample.

Severe frostbite injury can result in significant disability from amputation of limbs and digits which may be mitigated through prompt medical care. The reported rates of amputation vary widely between centers. Our aim was to describe the incidence and factors associated with amputation secondary to frostbite injury in the United States using a national sample of hospitalizations. Admissions for frostbite injury were identified in the National Inpatient Sample (2016-2018). Factors associated with amputation were assessed by multivariable logistic regression and clustered by hospital. The overa

Time Matters in Severe Frostbite: Assessment of Limb/Digit Salvage on the Individual Patient Level.

Severe frostbite is associated with high levels of morbidity through loss of digits or limbs. The aim of this study was to examine the salvage rate following severe frostbite injury. Frostbite patients from 2006 to 2014 were identified in the prospectively maintained database at a single urban burn and trauma center. Patients with imaging demonstrating a lack of blood flow in limbs/digits were included in the analysis (N = 73). The Hennepin Frostbite Score was used to quantify frostbite injury and salvage. This score provides a single value to assess each individual patient's salvage rate. The

Role of 99mTc MDP Bone Scan in Delineation of Ischaemic Zone in Cases of Severe Frostbite.

Frostbite or cold burn is the medical condition in which localized damage is caused to exposed skin and subcutaneous tissue due to freezing. Frostbite most likely involves body parts farthest from the heart and those with large exposed areas. At or below 0 °C (32 °F), blood vessels close to the skin start to constrict, and blood is shunted away from the extremities via the physiological feedback action of glomus bodies. This peripheral vasoconstriction helps to conserve core body temperature. In extreme cold, or when certain parts of the body are exposed to cold conditions for long periods, th

Effectiveness of Suprathel® application in partial thickness burns, frostbites and Lyell syndrome treatment.

UNLABELLED: The skin is the largest organ of the human body consisting of several layers possessing different properties and performing different physiological functions. The loss of skin integrity caused by a trauma or disease may provoke acute physiological and immune disorders that may even be fatal. The following properties are primarily taken into account when choosing the appropriate burn wound dressing: support of the epithelialisation process, pain and patient discomfort reduction, and treatment costs. THE AIM OF THE STUDY was to assess the usefulness of Suprathel in the treatment of p

["Teruel feet". Care and treatment of frostbite wounds in the hospitals of Navarra during the civil war].

The care of combatants with lesions caused by frostbite during the battle of Teruel, which was fought in extreme weather conditions and in temperatures as low as twenty degrees below zero, was the period of greatest medical activity and the highest rates of occupation in the military hospitals of Navarre during the civil war of 1936-1939. From November 1937 to March 1938, 375 cases of frostbite were registered in the provincial establishments, amongst which there was a predominance of cases of dry gangrene partially affecting the lower extremity, which was popularly known as "Teruel feet". Sequelae of moderate finger frostbite as assessed by subjective sensations, clinical signs, and thermophysiological responses.

The aim of the study was to investigate prevalence and qualities of sequelae following moderate finger frostbite. The study material comprised 30 subjects, who had suffered second-degree frostbite (73% contact frostbite) 4-11 years before this study. In clinical tests 66% of the subjects had an elevated tendency for vasospasm, yet only 20% suffered from white fingers. However, no marked traces of frostbite-related alterations were observed in systemic cardiovascular reflex tests or in X-ray examinations of the frostbite area. Subjective assessments revealed a high prevalence of sequelae (63%),
