BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted maternal and newborn health services in Bangladesh, exacerbating the large gaps in service utilization that existed prior to the pandemic. As part of its response, Bangladesh initiated remote antenatal and postnatal care telemedicine services led by midwives in 36 sub-district hospitals across five of Bangladesh's 64 districts. Gender-based violence screening and referral were integrated into the service to address a reported rise in violence following the country's pandemic lockdown.
METHODS: Mixed-methods implementation research was used to develo

The health impacts of exposure to physical, sexual or psychological gender-based violence (GBV) against men and women are substantial yet not well delineated. We systematically reviewed and meta-analysed 40 studies to evaluate the associations between GBV (including but not limited to intimate partner violence) and eight health outcomes: sexually transmitted infections excluding HIV, maternal abortion and miscarriage, HIV/AIDS, major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, drug use disorders, alcohol use disorders and self-harm. Using the Burden of Proof methods, we generated conservative metr

Estimates by the World Health Organization indicate that 1 in 3 women-more than one billion people worldwide-have experienced some form of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Violence Against Women (VAW) is a prominent subset of GBV, defined by the United Nations as any act "that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life." VAW can include verbal harassment, physical abuse, sexual abuse, honor killing, and femicide and can occ

Adolescent girls are at an increased risk of sexual violence, abuse, exploitation, and forced or early marriage across humanitarian contexts. In the past few years, prominent initiatives, organizations, and working groups have started to highlight the targeted needs and issues facing adolescent girls and have developed programmatic responses such as safe spaces for adolescent girls to protect and empower girls and reduce their vulnerabilities to violence or exploitation. A systematic review of academic and grey literature was conducted in September 2015 to examine the evidence base for program

BACKGROUND: School-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) is a major obstacle to inclusive, safe, and equitable education in sub-Saharan Africa. It undermines students' physical and mental health, academic performance, and overall development. Despite its widespread impact, consolidated evidence on SRGBV's prevalence, drivers, and effective interventions remains limited. This systematic review addresses that gap by examining existing research across sub-Saharan Africa contexts.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across JSTOR, WorldCat, PsycINFO, Web of Science, ERIC, and PubMed. Additi

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) is associated with high rates of psychopathology (i.e., depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder) in victim-survivors. Existing research has demonstrated that physical activity is beneficial for mental health and wellbeing across various populations. However, it is currently unclear whether moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is efficacious for victim-survivors of GBV. Therefore, this systematic review aims to understand 1) the acceptability and feasibility of leisure-time MVPA interventions for victim-survivors of GBV, 2) the efficacy

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is a human rights and social justice issue that impacts individuals worldwide, particularly university students. The literature demonstrates that culturally and contextually tailored programs to reduce and ultimately prevent SGBV for university students have received little priority in sub-Saharan African countries.
OBJECTIVES: This pilot study assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and safety of the peer-delivered Relationship Tidbits intervention for use with health science students in Ghana.
DESIGN: We conducted a pilot feasibility tes

BACKGROUND: Female entertainment workers (FEWs) in Cambodia experience a greater prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), psychological distress, substance abuse, and gender-based violence (GBV) than the general female population. Reaching FEWs with health education and linking them to services has been difficult because of their hidden and stigmatized status.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the efficacy of the Mobile Link intervention in improving FEWs' health by engaging and connecting them to existing HIV, sexual and reproductive healt

Since 2014, a protracted armed conflict has afflicted eastern Ukraine, resulting in the displacement of over 1.4 million residents. The resulting humanitarian crisis has placed women, particularly displaced women, at greater risk of gender-based violence (GBV). In Ukraine, reports of GBV were higher following the start of the conflict (22.4% in 2014 vs. 18.3% in 2007), with displaced women suffering from GBV nearly three times more than non-displaced residents (15.2% vs. 5.3%). Many GBV incidents in Ukraine have been reported along the "contact line," the border separating government from non-

Little is known regarding the types of interventions most effective in supporting wellness and recovery of victims of gender-based violence, particularly those simultaneously experiencing homelessness. This qualitative study explored the experiences of 18 young women experiencing gender-based violence and homelessness who participated in a community-based, trauma-informed group intervention in Toronto, Canada. Participants completed audio-recorded and transcribed semi-structured interviews, analyzed using thematic content analysis. Participants described valuing the safe, women-only space, sha

Gender-based violence is associated with an elevated risk of physical and psychological harm for girls and women. This study examines service user and provider experiences of a trauma-informed, peer-facilitated group psychosocial intervention (Peer Education and Connection through Empowerment [PEACE]) targeting female-identified youth experiencing homelessness and gender-based violence. Participants were recruited among service users and providers of the intervention, delivered in Toronto, Canada. We conducted 19 semi-structured interviews between May and October 2017, engaging 12 service user

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a major global public health and human rights issue with wide-ranging physical and mental health consequences. Physiotherapists frequently work with populations and conditions plausibly linked to violence exposure, yet little is known about their preparedness to identify and respond to GBV in Spanish-speaking contexts. We conducted a cross-sectional online convenience survey of Spanish-speaking physiotherapists from Latin America and Spain using the Spanish-language Physician Readiness to Manage Intimate Partner Violence Survey (PREMIS), originally developed and

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a global health concern that affects individuals across various settings, including higher educational institutions (HEIs), where female students are particularly vulnerable. In Tanzania, GBV within HEIs remains under-researched, despite its potential impact on students' well-being and academic performance. As part of a broader mixed-methods investigation on GBV among female students, this study specifically examined the reported prevalence and correlates of physical GBV in two Tanzanian higher education institutions, an often-overlooked area. We employed an anal

BACKGROUND: Many adolescents are vulnerable to gender-based violence, and it is a major public health issue. Even though the burden of gender-based violence is still high in Ethiopia, there is a lack of summary information to address the problem. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the pooled magnitude and factors associated with gender-based violence among female students in Ethiopian higher educational institutions.
METHODS: The primary articles were searched using databases like PubMed, Google Scholar, CINAHL, SCOPUS, EMBASE, and African Journal Online. Articles that assessed the magnitu
