BACKGROUND: Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare neurodegenerative disease caused by prions that is randomly distributed in all countries, with an overall yearly mortality rate of about 1-2 cases per million people. On a few occasions, however, sporadic CJD occurred with higher than expected rates, but further investigations failed to recognize any convincing causal link. In Italy, cluster analyses of sporadic CJD cases have not been performed previously.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the geographical distribution of sporadic CJD using municipality geographical data of Apulia with t

In Zambia, anthrax has emerged as a serious disease decimating humans, livestock and wildlife with devastating effects on eco-tourism resulting in the destabilization of major pristine wildlife sanctuaries. Consequently, the thrust of this study was to establish the spatial distribution of anthrax and determine ecological drivers of its recurrence, maintenance and epidemiological linkage to anthropogenic activities. Environmental and biological samples were collected within the livestock production and conservation areas (n = 80). Each sample was serially tested for Bacillus anthracis positivi

Cryptosporidiosis is an infectious disease of relevance to the cattle industry. The southern region of the Canadian province of Ontario is characterised by widespread cattle farming that is a key contributor to the Canadian dairy industry. Given Ontario's key role in the Canadian dairy industry and the potential impact that cryptosporidiosis can have on cattle operations, identifying areas of increased risk for bovine cryptosporidiosis is important. The primary goal of this study was to explore the distribution of bovine cryptosporidiosis, across the geographical areas served by the 29 Public

Malaria is an important health issue in French Guiana. Its principal mosquito vector in this region is Anopheles darlingi Root. Knowledge of the spatial distribution of this species is still very incomplete due to the extent of French Guiana and the difficulty to access most of the territory. Species distribution modeling based on the maximal entropy procedure was used to predict the spatial distribution of An. darlingi using 39 presence sites. The resulting model provided significantly high prediction performances (mean 10-fold cross-validated partial area under the curve and continuous Boyce

BACKGROUND: The global burden of cholera is largely unknown because the majority of cases are not reported. The low reporting can be attributed to limited capacity of epidemiological surveillance and laboratories, as well as social, political, and economic disincentives for reporting. We previously estimated 2.8 million cases and 91,000 deaths annually due to cholera in 51 endemic countries. A major limitation in our previous estimate was that the endemic and non-endemic countries were defined based on the countries' reported cholera cases. We overcame the limitation with the use of a spatial

BACKGROUND: Improving rural health is often identified as a priority area for research and policy in Canada. We examined how findings on HIV outcomes (virologic suppression) can vary depending on the definition of rurality used.
METHODS: We performed retrospective cohort analyses using the Comparative Outcomes and Service Utilization Trends study population-based cohort of adults (age ≥ 19 yr) living with HIV in British Columbia between Apr. 1, 2012, and Mar. 31, 2013. We performed univariate logistic regression analyses using the following geographic variables to predict HIV virologic suppre

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO), international donors and partners have emphasized the importance of integrated control of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Integrated mapping of NTDs is a first step for integrated planning of programmes, proper resource allocation and monitoring progress of control. Integrated mapping has several advantages over disease specific mapping by reducing costs and enabling co-endemic areas to be more precisely identified. We designed and conducted integrated mapping of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and podoconiosis in Ethiopia; here we present the met

BACKGROUND: Despite the proven efficacy of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in reducing the risk of HIV transmission, uptake remains suboptimal among populations with limited access and availability to PrEP-prescribing locations, particularly in the Southern United States. The accessibility of pharmacies positions them as a promising resource for expanding PrEP delivery and access and supporting uptake and adherence through HIV prevention programs to reduce geographic disparities.
OBJECTIVE: This study outlines a geospatial protocol to assess disparities in national PrEP availability. The aim o

The continuous exposure of electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation from cell phone towers may possibly have an influence on public health. Each cell phone tower is unique in terms of number of antennas and its associated attributes; thus, the radiation exposure varies from one tower to another. Hence, a standardized method for quantifying the exposure is beneficial while studying the effects of radiation on the human population residing around the cell phone towers. A mere collection of data or human samples without understanding the cell phone tower differences may show study results such as an

Lyme disease is emerging in Canada due to geographic range expansion of the tick vector Ixodes scapularis Say. Recent areas of emergence include parts of the southeastern Canadian Prairie region. We developed a map of potential risk areas for future I. scapularis establishment in the Canadian Prairie Provinces. Six I. scapularis risk algorithms were developed using different formulations of three indices for environmental suitability: temperature using annual cumulative degree-days > 0 °C (DD > 0 °C; obtained from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer satellite data as an index of cond

BACKGROUND: Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEEV) is an alphavirus with high pathogenicity in both humans and horses. Florida continues to have the highest occurrence of human cases in the USA, with four fatalities recorded in 2010. Unlike other states, Florida supports year-round EEEV transmission. This research uses GIS to examine spatial patterns of documented horse cases during 2005-2010 in order to understand the relationships between habitat and transmission intensity of EEEV in Florida.
METHODS: Cumulative incidence rates of EEE in horses were calculated for each county. Two cluster

The rapidly increasing number of spatial studies and the complexity of schistosomiasis transmission dynamics in Brazil indicate that surveillance and control programmes can benefit from the spatial approach, not only in areas susceptible to the introduction and establishment of new transmission foci but also in areas experiencing declines in schistosomiasis transmission. Several additional areas amenable to, or requiring, spatial research are identified. This paper reviews spatial studies of schistosomiasis in Brazil with a focus on the application of spatial tools in epidemiological, disease

BACKGROUND: During the 2014-16 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak, the Magburaka Ebola Management Centre (EMC) operated by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Tonkolili District, Sierra Leone, identified that available district maps lacked up-to-date village information to facilitate timely implementation of EVD control strategies. In January 2015, we undertook a survey in chiefdoms within the MSF EMC catchment area to collect mapping and village data. We explore the feasibility and cost to mobilise a local community for this survey, describe validation against existing mapping sources and use o

BACKGROUND: Follicular lymphoma (fl) is the most common indolent lymphoma and the 2nd most common non-Hodgkin lymphoma, accounting for 10%-20% of all lymphomas in the Western world. Epidemiologic and geographic trends of fl in Canada have not been investigated. Our study's objective was to analyze incidence and mortality rates and the geographic distribution of fl patients in Canada for 1992-2010.
METHODS: Demographic and geographic patient data for fl cases were obtained using the Canadian Cancer Registry, the Registre québécois du cancer, and the Canadian Vital Statistics database. Incidenc

Background: Access to congenital cardiac surgical care in Africa is limited and poorly characterized, with current assessments examining only the number of surgeons in individual countries compared to their respective national population. Objective: To characterize geographic catchment areas in Africa served by the nearest congenital cardiac surgeon(s), estimate patient travel distance, and map both the incidence and unmet surgical need due to congenital heart disease (CHD). Methods: Subnational population, CHD incidence, surgeon, and geographic data were collected from credible, publicly acce

INTRODUCTION: Defining the boundary of children's 'neighborhoods' has important implications for understanding the contextual influences on child health. Additionally, insight into activities that occur outside people's neighborhoods may indicate exposures that place-based studies cannot detect. This study aimed to 1) extend current neighborhood research, using data from wearable cameras and GPS devices that were worn over several days in an urban setting; 2) define the boundary of children's neighborhoods by using leisure time activity space data; and 3) determine the destinations visited by

Identifying hereditary colorectal cancer genes is historically complicated by genetic heterogeneity. Founder populations simplify genetic architecture through reduced allelic diversity and extended linkage disequilibrium. This write-up explores how Finland's unique demographic history, driven by geographic isolation and severe population bottlenecks, established the distinct "Finnish disease heritage." In the 1990s, this regional homogeneity proved instrumental in successfully mapping recurrent germline MLH1 (MutL Homolog 1) founder mutations in Lynch syndrome.
