Five-year observation of the relationship between body mass index and glycated hemoglobin in children with Type 1 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Poor metabolic control is a well-recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, the relationship between such factor as body weight and metabolic control in children with diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM1) is unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between body weight, age, metabolic control, sex, and form of insulin therapy in children with DM1. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of children with DM1 treated at one diabetes center for a minimum of 5 years since diagnosis. RESULTS: Median body mass index standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) inc

Utility of glycated hemoglobin screening in patients undergoing elective coronary artery surgery: Prospective, cohort study from the E-CABG registry.

BACKGROUND: Patients with increased glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) seem to be at increased risk of sternal wound infection (SWI) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). However, it is unclear whether increased baseline HbA1c levels may affect other postoperative outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data on preoperative levels of HbA1c were collected from 2606 patients undergoing elective isolated CABG from 2015 to 2016 and included in the prospective, multicenter E-CABG registry. RESULTS: The prevalence of HbA1c ≥ 53 mmol/mol (7.0%) among non-diabetics was 5.3%, among non-insulin dependent dia

Glycated hemoglobin A1c-based adjusted glycemic variables in patients with diabetes presenting with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Acute hyperglycemia is a common finding in patients presenting to emergency departments (EDs) with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Several studies have argued against the association between hyperglycemia at admission and adverse outcomes in patients with diabetes and an acute illness. Recent studies have shown that glucose-related variables (eg, glycemic gaps and stress hyperglycemia ratios) that are adjusted for glycated hemoglobin levels can indicate the severity of a variety of diseases. The objective of this study was to assess whether these hemoglobi

Higher glycated hemoglobin amplifies the effect of apolipoprotein E epsilon 4-related cognition and olfaction impairments in type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 (APOE4) is recognized as a genetic risk factor for cognitive decline and neurodegeneration in both type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and Alzheimer's disease, while glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) reflects persistent hyperglycemia and serves as a key indicator of long-term glycemic control in T2DM. Although both factors have been individually linked to neurobehavioral deficits, it remains uncertain whether HbA1c contributes to APOE4-related cognitive and olfactory impairment in individuals with T2DM. AIM: To investigate the role of HbA1c in APOE4-associated cog

Hemoglobin glycation index and renal progression in patients with type 2 diabetes: a 5-year cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Renal progression remains a major unmet clinical challenge in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The hemoglobin glycation index (HGI), reflecting inter-individual variability in hemoglobin glycation independent of glucose levels, has been proposed as a complementary glycemic marker; however, its prognostic value for renal outcomes remains uncertain. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 441 adults with T2DM followed at a tertiary medical center between 2016 and 2021. HGI was calculated as the difference between observed HbA1c and predicted HbA1c derived fr

Association between hemoglobin glycation index and delirium after gastric surgery: Based upon the MIMIC-IV.

Defined as the observed hemoglobin A1c minus the expected hemoglobin A1c calculated from glucose level, the hemoglobin glycation index (HGI) quantifies the mismatch between chronic glycation status and contemporaneous glucose level. This research sought to ascertain whether HGI is associated with postoperative delirium (POD) after gastric surgery by analyzing data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV database. We implemented a retrospective cohort study utilizing data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV database (v3.1) on patients who underwent gastric su

Case of type 1 diabetes mellitus with decreased hemoglobin glycation index after switching insulin pump.

This case report described a 78-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes who experienced a significant decrease in the hemoglobin glycation index (HGI) after switching her insulin pump from MiniMed™770G to 780G. Despite minimal changes in glycemic control, including a slight decrease in the average sensor glucose and % coefficient of variation (%CV) from continuous glucose monitoring metrics, her glycated hemoglobin level decreased from 8.2% to 7.3%, and HGI decreased from approximately 1.3-0.5. Previous reports have shown that HGI indicates differences in the glycation rate of hemoglobin between i

Correlation Between Hemoglobin Glycation Index Measured by Continuous Glucose Monitoring With Complications in Type 1 Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: HbA1C is the "gold standard" parameter to evaluate glycemic control in diabetes; however, its correlation with mean glucose is not always perfect. The objective of this study was to correlate continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)-derived hemoglobin glycation index (HGI) with microvascular complications. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study including permanent users of CGM with type 1 diabetes mellitus or latent autoimmune diabetes of the adult. HGI was estimated, and presence of microvascular complications was compared in subgroups with high or low HGI. A logistic regression
