The death of Alexander the Great--a spinal twist of fate.

Alexander the Great died in 323 B.C. from an unknown cause. Physical depictions of this historical figure reveal the likelihood of a cervical scoliotic deformity. This is substantiated with the medical history and is correlated with his untimely death. For the first time, it is concluded that Alexander's death may have ensued from the sequelae of congenital scoliotic syndrome.

Hallmarks in the history of enteral and parenteral nutrition: from antiquity to the 20th century.

Parenteral nutrition (PN) and enteral nutrition (EN) have a very long history, emerging in the ancient world and developing throughout the common epoch. This history dates back as far as 3500 bc to the ancient Egyptians, Indians, and Chinese. Their medical practices were the first reports of enteral feeding therapy, provided via rectum with enemas of wine, milk, whey, wheat, and barley. Hippocrates and Plato, in ancient Greece, were the first personalities to emphasize the importance of diet on health. In the following centuries, Erasistratus and Herophilus described the first notion of the ci

2,500 years of nosebleeding in art.

In 132 objects of art (mainly paintings and drawings, a few sculptures, and one mosaic) dating from the pre-classical period in ancient Greece to our days, nosebleeding due to different reasons could be detected in museums, churches, galleries and art-books. Children and adults were bleeding from their noses because of mechanical injury, infectious diseases, haemorrhagic diathesis, and drugs. Some artists depicted nosebleeding in a very realistic manner, others represented this symptom in an exaggerated or caricaturistic way. From a total of 132 examples of nosebleeding 53 are presented, inclu

Genetic origins of the Minoans and Mycenaeans.

The origins of the Bronze Age Minoan and Mycenaean cultures have puzzled archaeologists for more than a century. We have assembled genome-wide data from 19 ancient individuals, including Minoans from Crete, Mycenaeans from mainland Greece, and their eastern neighbours from southwestern Anatolia. Here we show that Minoans and Mycenaeans were genetically similar, having at least three-quarters of their ancestry from the first Neolithic farmers of western Anatolia and the Aegean, and most of the remainder from ancient populations related to those of the Caucasus and Iran. However, the Mycenaeans

[Historical necessity and human action in Morte e vida severina].

Using the essential elements of tragic action described in Aristotles Poetics, the text compares João Cabral de Melo Neto's Morte e vida severina to Sophocles Oedipus rex with the purpose of bringing to light the tension that exists between human necessity and human action. It is an eminently epidemiological fact that draws a link between these two works. In Morte e vida severina, the causa efficiens behind Severino's decision to migrate is a famine; in Oedipus rex, a plague afflicting the inhabitants of Thebes is the event that hastens discovery of king Laiuss true assassin. It is a reflectio

Surgery in antiquity: the origin of the Trendelenburg position revisited.

INTRODUCTION: The Raised Pelvic Position, also known as Trendelenburg position, consists of the elevation of the pelvis above the horizontal plane in the supine position with the head lowered. The position is named after Friedrich Trendelenburg, a German surgeon, who flourished in Berlin at the end of the nineteenth century. Although modern studies trace the position's principle back to the first century BC, we herein present even earlier descriptions, dating back to the fifth century BC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The whole ancient Greek literature was digitally searched. All relevant references

Effects of Exercise on Arrhythmia (and Viceversa): Lesson from the Greek Mythology.

Exercise represents an important lifestyle factor in all human ages when felt in harmony with other psycho-physical and environmental variables that affect individual life (e. g. quality of interest, affections, environment, diet and food). Consequently, in addition to the training level, the amount, intensity and modality of exercise (ana-/aerobic, isometric/isotonic), need to be personalized, considering the underlying diseases, which may benefit from it or worsening.Greek mythology gives us good examples of the exercise concept's evolution. From Discus-thrower to Spear-carrier the idea of ph

[Descriptions of treatment in the Hippocratic Collection with special reference to surgery, particularly for urinary stones].

PURPOSE: I analyzed mentions of treatment in the Hippocratic Collection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: I examined quantitatively mentions of treatments in the Hippocratic Collection (Roeb edition, Otsuki edition, and Kon edition) to compare preferences for therapy between the Kos and Knidos schools. RESULTS: Treatments, mentioned in 2,687 passages, were medical in 2,319 (86%), and surgical in 368 (14%). These 2,687 descriptions included 1,023 (38%) from the Kos, 1,261 (47%) from the Knidos school, and 403 (15%) from unspecified schools. Of the 2,319 descriptions of medical treatment, 560 (24%) refe

Deformity in the "Boxing Boys".

The late Bronze Age wall painting the Boxing Boys (c. 17th-16th century BCE) was excavated in the ancient town of Akrotiri on the Greek island of Thera. This article considers a medical interpretation for the spinal-pelvic anomaly in the anatomy of one of the boys. The artist has depicted a combination of structural anatomical adjustments diagnostic of spondylolisthesis, a forward slippage of one of the lumbar vertebrae. The accurate portrayal of the surface appearance of this condition suggests that the artist painted directly from a live subject. Thus, the Boxing Boys mural may be the earlie

Taenia solium Cysticercosis--The lessons of history.

Human taeniasis as well as porcine and human cysticercosis--caused by the pork tapeworm Taenia solium--are ancient diseases. The fact that pigs were considered impure in the ancient Greece and that the Koran prohibited the consumption of pork, were likely related to the knowledge that cysticercosis may affect swine. Evidence suggests that human cysticercosis was also present in the ancient Egypt and Rome. During the Renaissance, the causative agent was properly identified and human cases were recognized. Confirmation that both taeniasis and cysticercosis were caused by the same parasite was pr

History of the brainstem-A developing concept throughout the history of medicine.

The chapter explores the historical journey of the discovery and understanding of the brainstem, including its anatomy, physiology, and vital functions. It highlights key milestones, advancements in medicine and philosophy of science, from ancient Greece with figures like Galen, to the scientific leap starting at the Renaissance period with Vesalius, Mondino de Luzzi, Willis, and others providing detailed descriptions of the brainstem and cranial nerves. The 18th century marked a significant development with the invention of the microscope, leading to a deeper understanding of the brainstem's

Learning from the past in the COVID-19 era: rediscovery of quarantine, previous pandemics, origin of hospitals and national healthcare systems, and ethics in medicine.

After the dramatic coronavirus outbreak at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, on 11 March 2020, a pandemic was declared by the WHO. Most countries worldwide imposed a quarantine or lockdown to their citizens, in an attempt to prevent uncontrolled infection from spreading. Historically, quarantine is the 40-day period of forced isolation to prevent the spread of an infectious disease. In this educational paper, a historical overview from the sacred temples of ancient Greece-the cradle of medicine-to modern hospitals, along with the conceive of healthcare systems, is provided. Craniofacial morphology in ancient and modern Greeks through 4,000 years.

BACKGROUND: Multiple 20th century studies have speculated on the anthropological similarities of the modern inhabitants of Greece with their ancient predecessors. The present investigation attempts to add to this knowledge by comparing the craniofacial configuration of 141 ancient (dating around 2,000-500 BC) and 240 modern Greek skulls (the largest material among relevant national studies). METHOD: Skulls were grouped in age at death, sex, era and geographical categories; lateral cephalograms were taken and 53 variables were measured and correlated statistically. The craniofacial measurement

The paradigms of female beauty: From antiquity to the contemporary era. A historical and evolutionary perspective.

Throughout history, the perception of female beauty has been shaped by cultural and historical values as well as evolutionary patterns. Understanding these paradigms is essential to grasping these concepts and their evolution, and to applying them to contemporary treatments. This comprehensive review aims to synthesize historical, evolutionary, and anthropometric data regarding female beauty, tracing its evolution to modern clinical applications in aesthetic medicine. We analyze the various standards of beauty from antiquity-spanning ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and Rome-up to the present da

From Horus the child to Hephaestus who limps: a romp through history.

The question of why Hephaestus, the Greek god of smiths, limped has been the subject of much debate, mainly on mythological grounds. This debate extended also into the field of medical diagnosis, with attempts at defining the nature of the deformity that made the crippled Hephaestus the buffoon of the other Olympic gods. One problem encountered in these debates was the changes to which the ugly young Hephaestus was subjected with the passing of time-from a limping deformed youth to the later dignified and normal man. While some authors, largely influenced by poetic Greek texts and vase paintin

Porotic hyperostosis, anemias, malarias, and marshes in the prehistoric Eastern Mediterranean.

Porotic hyperostosis, formerly called osteoporosis symmetrica, is an overgrowth of the spongy marrow space of the skull. In children, other bones may also be affected. The disease is a consequence of one of the thalassemias or sicklemia. These anemias are balanced polymorphisms which are apparently maintained by falciparum malaria. Falciparum malaria spread over the anopheline belts of the Old World in coincidence with porotic hyperostosis, but did not penetrate the New World. Here some other parasitism or deficiency anemia must have been the cause of porotic hyperostosis in ancient times. In
