Calcium-myristoyl Tug is a new mechanism for intramolecular tuning of calcium sensitivity and target enzyme interaction for guanylyl cyclase-activating protein 1: dynamic connection between N-fatty acyl group and EF-hand controls calcium sensitivity.

Guanylyl cyclase-activating protein 1 (GCAP1), a myristoylated Ca(2+) sensor in vision, regulates retinal guanylyl cyclase (RetGC). We show that protein-myristoyl group interactions control Ca(2+) sensitivity, apparent affinity for RetGC, and maximal level of cyclase activation. Mutating residues near the myristoyl moiety affected the affinity of Ca(2+) binding to EF-hand 4. Inserting Phe residues in the cavity around the myristoyl group increased both the affinity of GCAP1 for RetGC and maximal activation of the cyclase. NMR spectra show that the myristoyl group in the L80F/L176F/V180F mutant

Navigating Social Enactments in Psychoanalytic Group Therapy.

Addressing social enactments in group therapy requires integrating developmental theory with cultural identity dynamics. As social power dynamics emerge, the effectiveness of psychoanalytic group psychotherapy can be enhanced by modifying perspectives on transference, resistance, and the emotional transparency of the leader. This paper proposes theoretical and technical modifications to respond to repetitions of social inequities in the group process, including revised thinking about resistance analysis, the group agreement and the contact function. These changes aim to equip leaders to engage

The desire to avoid cognitive dissonance drives community formation in a social network model.

As the consequences of opinion polarization effect our everyday life in more and more aspect, the understanding of its origins and driving forces becomes increasingly important. Here we develop an agent-based network model with realistic human traits: individuals in our simulations are endowed with an internal belief system which they attempt to keep as coherent as possible. This desire – to reassure existing attitudes while avoiding cognitive dissonance – is one of the most influential and widely accepted theories in social psychology by now. Our model shows that even in networks that start o

[Floating objects, supporting the dynamics of a team of advanced practice nurses].

This article describes a systemic approach implemented with advanced practice nurses at the Bordeaux University Hospital to strengthen their professional identity and group dynamics. Using floating objects (problem basket, genogram, coat of arms, sculptures, systemic storytelling), they were able to share their experiences, clarify their role within the institution, and build long-lasting cohesion.

Knowledge coordination in a semi-closed IM network under time-critical conditions: Making distributed expertise actionable.

Semi-closed, cross-organizational instant messaging (IM) environments combine bounded membership with rapid communication across organizational boundaries. Building on research showing that expertise is distributed across professional networks, this study examines how journalists describe the coordination through which dispersed knowledge becomes collectively usable under time-critical conditions. A cross-organizational LINE group comprising Taiwanese television political journalists provides a revelatory case of digitally mediated epistemic coordination. Drawing on qualitative interviews with

Rhythmic Structure Shapes Dyadic Self-Other Representations Through Interpersonal Action Coupling.

Moving in unison to a musical beat can blur boundaries between individual movements, fostering prosociality. However, structured patterns of sounds and silences in rhythms (meter) allow various ways of moving to the beat. How do these different rhythmic interpretations affect social connectedness? Unacquainted dyads drummed in unison, and at more complex integer multiple and polyrhythmic ratios. Coordination requires continuously tracking who does what and when. We varied trackability by manipulating task-sharing (the same or separate drum pads, and audible or inaudible partner drumming). More

A Group-Based Participatory Approach to Examine Community Resilience and Trauma.

BackgroundThe St Louis Resiliency in Communities After Stress and Trauma (ReCAST) project promoted community well-being in a designated Promise Zone over a 5-year period. The primary goals of the ReCAST project are: (1) to build a foundation to promote well-being, resiliency, and community healing through service integration; (2) to improve access to trauma-informed community behavioral health resources and youth peer support; and (3) to create community change through community and youth engagement, leadership development, improved governance, and capacity building.PurposeTo examine ReCAST st

Outgroup friendships and social influence in the development of adolescent attitudes toward secondary outgroups.

Having outgroup friends not only improves attitudes toward the (primary) outgroup but potentially also toward other (secondary) outgroups. This "secondary transfer effect" is attributed to the generalization of intergroup contact, but it may also reflect social influence as friends shape each other's outgroup attitudes. In three studies (two empirical and one simulation), we applied stochastic actor-oriented models to longitudinal network data representing friendships between adolescents. Across Studies 1 (n = 812) and 2 (n = 2,559), we found no evidence that having more primary outgroup frien

Cardiac synchrony, peer relationships, and affective experiences in children during group interactions.

The current study focused on the affective and physiological processes that may emerge during children’s dyadic peer interactions in groups. We hypothesized that physiological synchrony, the correspondence of physiological processes between individuals, would be associated with both the quality of the relationship and children’s individual and shared affective experiences. We tested this hypothesis in our sample of 187 children (mean age = 11.32, SD = 0.69), who arrived at the laboratory in groups of 4 to 6 individuals from the same classroom. During their interactions, we assessed all pairwis

Digital focus groups in healthcare interventions: A reflexive methodological analysis of how socio-technical and relational factors co-produce qualitative data.

BACKGROUND: Digital focus groups are increasingly used in health research, yet their methodological implications within complex interventions remain insufficiently examined. When conducted with pre-existing cohorts, digital focus groups may function not only as evaluative tools but also as relational and socio-technical encounters that shape the generation of qualitative data. The goal of the present study was to examine how digital focus groups operate within this context. METHODS: This study presents a methodological re-analysis of focus group material originally collected for the evaluatio

Listening and being heard during group psychotherapy: A response surface analysis of (in)congruence in communication on cohesion and interest in continued group services after the initial session.

Conversational give-and-take after members engage in self-disclosure during group psychotherapy-a form of mutual influence implicated in group cohesion and continuation of treatment-can be conceptualized dyadically as the degree to which members engage in active, empathic listening and perceive others to do the same (i.e., responsiveness). Examining the effects of group members' perception of balance between their own level of listening and other members' responding (i.e., congruence) as it relates to group process and outcome can provide insights and identify opportunities for intervention fr

A Longitudinal Examination of Children's Friendships Across Racial Status and Gender and Their Intergroup Prosocial Behavior.

In this research, we examined (a) the primary effects of intergroup friendships: whether having a friend of a different gender/racial status benefits children's gender/racial status-based prosocial behavior and (b) the secondary transfer of intergroup friendships: whether friendships from one domain (e.g., gender) would extend to improved prosocial behavior toward outgroup members of another domain (e.g., race). Participants were 603 third- to fifth-grade students (Mage = 9.06, SD = .90; 47.9% girls; 52.4% racially minoritized). Peer nominations of prosocial behavior and friendships were colle

Collaborative Wayfinding: A Critical Review.

Though people can navigate alone, collaborative wayfinding is ubiquitous in human life. Use of GPS devices does not inevitably make it easy to navigate together: conflict in collaborative wayfinding is familiar to most of us, as is failure at it. Yet we know little about how people find their way together. What mechanisms and conditions support effective group dynamics and performance? What difference does a shared history make in grounding communication and decision-making in wayfinding? Only in the last few years have these questions started to be addressed, but recent developments have come

Attempting to validate a group psychotherapy session taxonomy: A conceptual replication and extension.

This study attempted to conceptually replicate the five-category typology system for group psychotherapy sessions developed by Li et al. (2021) and aimed to identify whether sessions of one type and one climate valence were more likely to follow sessions of the same type (perseveration effect) and similar valence (climate valence continuity), respectively. Ninety-eight individuals with a history of problematic alcohol use attended one of 19 six-session groups, which were either focused on identity transitions or career development. Following each session, individuals' perceptions of the group

Creative social prescribing groups during lockdown: a photo-elicitation evaluation of group users' experiences.

Previous research has examined the experiences of voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) group providers, but the voices of group users, especially those recovering from, or living with SMI, are sparse. This study addresses that gap, using the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown as a natural experiment to gain insights into the experiences of individuals participating in VCSE-run creative and social groups, and comparing this with the experiences of providers. We conducted photo-elicitation focus groups to explore group members' perspectives. Lockdown highlighted to group members what they

A teamwork response tree model for dyadic agreement-accuracy responses.

Teamwork research increasingly relies on collaborative problem-solving (CPS) tasks to assess how individuals coordinate and integrate knowledge in joint work settings. However, most existing measurement approaches focus on final task accuracy and provide limited insight into the interaction processes that produce collaborative outcomes. Conventional scoring methods typically confound whether team members reach agreement with whether their responses are correct. This study introduces the Teamwork Response Tree (TRTree) model that decomposes dyadic collaborative responses into two linked latent

Payoff selectivity drives collective intelligence during dynamic resource tracking in humans.

Humans' abilities for complex social learning and collective adaptation stand out across species. Yet it is largely unknown how people integrate dynamically changing personal and social cues in realistic environments, resulting in collective intelligence or maladaptive behavior. Here, we report an online 3D immersive-reality experiment in which participants (n = 621) search for and track a mobile resource under realistic visual-spatial constraints. Participants complete the task either alone or in groups of five with different types of social information and resource speeds. Contrasting earlie

Escaping Russia, trapped by identity: National identity negotiation in light of ingroup wrongdoing.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine caused a wave of emigration, with vast numbers of people fleeing Russia due to political persecution or safety concerns. The study explored how anti-war Russian emigrants negotiate their national identity and moral responsibility amid ingroup wrongdoing. Previous research has shown that having a stigmatized identity can lead to self-group distancing. Yet those studies concerned groups that can be characterized as victims of violence or discrimination, and there is a lack of research on identity performance and negotiation of people who represent perpetrator grou

The effect of social identity on objective and perceived social support in groups.

The social identity approach posits that social identity fosters mutual social support within groups. However, prior research has relied almost exclusively on individual-level self-report measures, neglecting the mutuality of support and the group as a unit of analysis. This pre-registered one-factorial online experiment with three-person groups (N = 306 group members; N = 102 groups) examined how social identity shapes objective mutual support, perceived provided and received support and the perceived benevolence of received support. Following a pre-tested identity manipulation (N = 120), gro

The longitudinal interplay between acculturation and intergroup contact in adolescence.

In current multicultural societies, mutual adjustment of majority and ethnic minority groups is a crucial issue shaped by groups' acculturation preferences and their encounters. These aspects are particularly relevant in adolescence when young people extend their social relationships and develop attitudes towards others. However, the association between acculturation preferences across domains and the quantity and quality of intergroup contact in adolescence remains underexplored. Thus, we conducted a three-wave longitudinal study with majority (N = 740; 64.73% female; Mage = 14.58) and ethnic
