In this study we characterized clinically and evaluated molecularly a large family with maternally inherited hearing impairment. Relatives were evaluated audiologically and clinically, the most likely pattern of inheritance was deduced, and molecular DNA analysis for the known mitochondrial mutations associated with hearing impairment was performed. Clinical examination of several relatives showed a normal general state of health, but in 14 of the members tested variable degrees of sensorineural hearing loss were noted. Carbamazepine is a commonly prescribed anticonvulsant medication that affects various levels of the nervous system. We report a case of temporary sensorineural hearing loss in a patient after overdosing with 36 g of carbamazepine. Six days after the overdose, the patient complained of bilateral hearing loss and tinnitus. Audiograms revealed a 30- to 40-dB sensorineural hearing loss bilaterally. Although there is no cure for certain forms of hearing loss, many patients can be helped, especially when the problem is recognized early. The incidence of hearing disorders in 34 State Penitentiary prison inmates all with a previous history of drug abuse were investigated. Subjects were evaluated using routine pure-tone air conduction audiometry, immittance measures, and short-latency auditory brain stem responses. A computerised child health register was used to study the coverage, referral rate, and false positive rate of the eight month hearing distraction test in a cohort of 1990 births to residents of one district during an eight month period. From 1970 through 1984, 289 airplane crew who failed to satisfy criteria for physical examination for airplane crew were studied. The hearing loss in left ear was more frequently found than in the right. Because noise level (Leq) in cockpit was found to be about 90 dB, the noise did not seem to have caused the hearing loss. The authors presumed that hearing loss in cockpit crew might be either due to head phone sound from which the aircrew hear ATC (Air Traffic Control) from the control tower or to an individual hypersusceptibility.

Recent laboratory and clinical studies provide increasing evidence that idiopathic sudden hearing loss can be effectively treated. First, corticosteroid therapy has been shown to be efficacious in restoring hearing in patients with moderate hearing losses. Future scientific and diagnostic interest in frequency resolution requires an evaluation of the different methods that are available to measure it. We compared three methods: (1) pure-tone thresholds in broadband noise, (2) pure-tone thresholds in the presence of a fixed pure-tone masker and (3) psychoacoustical tuning curves.
