Burkholderia pseudomallei, a Gram-negative bacterium is found in the soil and water, mainly in Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. It is responsible for melioidosis in human and animals. The bacteria produce several potential virulent factors such as extracellular protease, hemolysin, lipase and lecithinase. The isolation of virulence genes and the study of their functions will contribute to our understanding of bacterial pathogenesis. Previous studies have implicated protease as a contributing virulence factor in the pathogenesis of some bacteria. Three out of 5000 clones screened from a g

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are congenital anomalies which include cleft palate (CP) and cleft lip and palate (CLP). These anatomical mal-fusion of the palate may favor the abnormal overgrowth of oral microorganisms, such as Candida spp. This study aimed to address the colonization rate of Candida spp. found in the oral cavity of children with OFCs compared to children with NP. Since Candida spp. vary in their pathogenicity and response to antifungals, determining the oral carriage rate of Candida spp. and assessing their virulence factors is important to determine the need for adminis

The high mortality rate associated with Listeria monocytogenes can be attributed to its ability to invade the body systemically and to activate inflammasomes. Both of these processes are facilitated by expressing a major virulence factor known as listeriolysin O, a 56 kDa pore-forming protein encoded by the hly gene. Listeriolysin O plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of the bacterium by facilitating the escape of the pathogen from the phagosome into the cytosol. This process is essential for the successful establishment of infection. In addition, listeriolysin O is known as an immunomodu

The influence of some members of the togavirus family (tick-borne encephalitis, dengue 2, Langat, Tahyna) and the vaccines used extensively for prophylaxis of tick-borne encephalitis and yellow fever on the immune response to a heterologous antigen was studied. The tick-borne encephalitis, Langat and dengue 2 viruses as well as the tick-borne encephalitis and yellow fever vaccines were found to alter the immune response of the recipient to subsequent administration of sheep erythrocytes. Some togaviruses (tick-borne encephalitis, Langat, yellow fever, dengue 2) stimulate formation of specific

Proteus species are Gram-negative, highly motile opportunistic pathogens belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae and are widely distributed in the environment, including the human digestive tract and animals. Among them, Proteus mirabilis is the most clinically significant species and is commonly associated with catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), wound infections, gastrointestinal disorders, and other nosocomial infections. The pathogenicity of Proteus is attributed to several virulence factors, including swarming motility, urease production, fimbriae, adhesins, hemolysi

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is a urinary tract pathogen responsible for most nosocomial urinary tract infections and can cause severe conditions like acute cystitis of the bladder or pyelonephritis. UPEC harbors a host of virulence factors like curli, hemolysin, siderophore, and motility factors and can form biofilm-like communities and quiescent reservoirs that aid its survival. This study was performed to investigate the antibiofilm, antimicrobial, and antivirulence potentials of three chromone derivatives, namely, 6-bromo 3-formylchromone, 6-chloro 3-formylchromone, and 3-formyl 6

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a marine bacterium and causes opportunistic gastroenteritis in humans. Clinical strains of V. parahaemolyticus contain haemolysin and type III secretion systems (T3SS) that define their pathotype. A growing number of strains isolated recently from the environment have acquired these virulence genes constituting a pool of potential pathogens. This study used comparative genomics to identify genetic factors that delineate environmental and clinical V. parahaemolyticus population and understand the similarities and differences between the T3SS2 phylotypes. The comparati

Uropathogens are among the most common infectious agents in humans worldwide. The problem is further exacerbated by the escalating emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among bacteria causing urinary tract infections (UTIs). The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified antibiotic resistance as the most serious public health threat of this century, demanding global action. The most common bacteria contributing approximately 85% of UTIs include Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterococcus spp. Reports of intrinsic and/ or acquired resistance mechani

Humans are colonized by thousands of bacterial species, but it is difficult to assess the metabolic and pathogenic potential of the majority of these because they have yet to be cultured. Here, we characterize an uncultivated vaginal mycoplasma tightly associated with trichomoniasis that was previously known by its 16S rRNA sequence as "Mnola." In this study, the mycoplasma was found almost exclusively in women infected with the sexually transmitted pathogen Trichomonas vaginalis, but rarely observed in women with no diagnosed disease. The genomes of four strains of this species were reconstru

BACKGROUND: Cholera toxin (CT) and toxin-co-regulated pili (TCP) are the major virulence factors of Vibrio cholerae O1 and O139 strains that contribute to the pathogenesis of disease during devastating cholera pandemics. However, CT and TCP negative V. cholerae strains are still able to cause severe diarrheal disease in humans through mechanisms that are not well understood.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To determine the role of other virulence factors in V. cholerae pathogenesis, we used a CT and TCP independent infection model in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and identified the hemo

In foodborne listeriosis, the first step of infection must be attachment to, and invasion of, the gastrointestinal epithelium by virulent Listeria monocytogenes. Virulence factors affecting this invasion are only now being determined. We examined the interaction of L. monocytogenes, serotypes 4b and 1/2a strains with "smooth" and "rough" characteristics. In addition, flagellated and non-flagellated isogenic strains altered by transposon mutagenesis were examined to study the effect of flagellae on virulence. Strains of Listeria ivanovii and Listeria innocua were also studied. L. ivanovii demon

Staphylococcus aureus produces a number of virulence factors. The major virulence factors exhibited by S aureus include various antigens, enzymes, cytotoxins and exotoxins (e.g. hemolysins, enterotoxins and toxic shock syndrome toxin). In this report, we show the influence of punicalagin on the secretion of exoprotein from S aureus by western blotting, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) release assay and quantitative RT-PCR. When added to S aureus cultures at an OD600 of 0.9, graded subinhibitory concentrations of punicalagin reduced the production of α-toxin, SEA and SEB in methicillin-resistant Sta

Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) is a highly pathogenic bacterial pathogen in aquatic animals. Our previous study has demonstrated the significant inhibitory effect of baicalin on β-hemolytic/cytolytic activity, which is a key virulence factor of S. agalactiae. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the mechanism underlying baicalin's inhibition of S. agalactiae β-hemolytic/cytolytic activity by transcriptomic analysis. Bacteria were exposed to 39.06 µg/mL baicalin for 6 h, and their β-hemolytic/cytolytic activities were assessed using blood plates. Then, the differentially expressed gen

Pseudomonas entomophila is an entomopathogenic bacterium that, upon ingestion, kills Drosophila melanogaster as well as insects from different orders. The complete sequence of the 5.9-Mb genome was determined and compared to the sequenced genomes of four Pseudomonas species. P. entomophila possesses most of the catabolic genes of the closely related strain P. putida KT2440, revealing its metabolically versatile properties and its soil lifestyle. Several features that probably contribute to its entomopathogenic properties were disclosed. Unexpectedly for an animal pathogen, P. entomophila is de

We reported a case of non-0:1 group Vibrio cholerae septicemia with myelodysplatic syndrome in Taiwan. We also reviewed the other 22 reported cases of non-0:1 Vibrion cholerae septicemia found in the literature regarding its pathogenesis and treatment. The case mortality rate of these 23 cases was 47.8%. Most of them had immunocompromised diseases, particularly liver cirrhosis and hematologic malignancy. Therefore, the most important factor is the host defense. The cholera-like enterotoxin and E1-Tor-like hemolysin also play a major role, but whether the gall bladder plays a role in organ grow

Staphylococcus aureus, like other gram-positive pathogens, has evolved a large repertoire of virulence factors as a powerful weapon to subvert the host immune system, among which alpha-hemolysin (Hla), a secreted pore-forming cytotoxin, plays a preeminent role. We observed a concentration-dependent reduction in Hla production by S. aureus in the presence of sub-inhibitory concentrations of isorhamnetin, a flavonoid from the fruits of Hippophae rhamnoides L., which has little antibacterial activity. We further evaluate the effect of isorhamnetin on the transcription of the Hla-encoding gene hla

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne human pathogen responsible for invasive infections presenting overall a high mortality. Despite the ubiquity of the microorganism, the actual disease rate is quite low and the disease is most often associated with an underlying predisposition. Foodborne and environmental isolates were traditionally considered of similar pathogenicity compared to clinical isolates. But the analysis of mutations in the genes encoding specific virulence factors (internalin, hemolysin, phospholipases, surface protein ActA and regulator protein PrfA), quantitative studies with
