Dexamethasone, one of the key medications for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), may cause hiccups as an adverse effect. In this case series, we present five patients who developed hiccups after receiving dexamethasone for CINV. We successfully switched dexamethasone to an equipotent dosage of either methylprednisolone or prednisolone, which resolved the hiccups while maintaining adequate control of CINV. This was achieved without changing the rest of the antiemetic regimen, chemotherapy doses, or the use of other medications such as baclofen, haloperidol, and m

Persistent hiccup can conceal life-threatening clinical conditions of highly heterogeneous nature. Here, we report a case of a persistent hiccup that has been temporally associated with dental implant insertion in a patient with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. This 67-year-old patient underwent dental implant in area 36 and the procedure was performed without acute complications. A prolonged hiccup started ~48 h after the procedure: it failed to respond to several medications and it lasted for ~18 days, after which it spontaneously disappeared. Brain imaging and neurological examination were c

Hiccoughs (singultus) is a habitual physiological phenomenon, the persistence of which might indicate neurological and extraneurological multiple lesions. Its activation involves starting up numerous central and peripheral mechanisms which have yet to be clearly determined. Hiccoughs results from an intermittent myoclonus of the diaphragm, reflex in origin, with unknown authentic cause or physiological significance. It has been suggested that, more than just an abnormal reflex, it could be a type of myoclonus brought on by repeated activity of the 'solitary inspiratory nucleus', by releasing c

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary embolism is considered a life-threatening condition, with a variable spectrum of clinical presentations. Dyspnea, hemoptysis, and chest pain are the classical symptoms; however, atypical presentations may delay the diagnosis. Persistent hiccups as the sole presentation of pulmonary embolism are rarely reported, posing a diagnostic challenge. Identifying this rare presentation is paramount for early diagnosis and improving patient outcomes.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old Egyptian man was admitted with persistent, daily hiccups lasting ~2 months, refractory to conservati

The clinical applications of dexmedetomidine in infants and children have included sedation during mechanical ventilation, prevention of post-anesthesia delirium, control of procedure-related pain and anxiety, and treatment of shivering. We present anecdotal experience with the use of dexmedetomidine to treat hiccups that developed intraoperatively in an adolescent following the induction of anesthesia and placement of a laryngeal mask airway. The neural pathways and neurotransmitters involved with hiccups are reviewed, options for intraoperative treatment presented, and previous reports of th

Introduction: Aripiprazole, a commonly prescribed antipsychotic, has been rarely associated with the onset of hiccups. This study aims to elucidate the prevalence, risk factors, and management of aripiprazole-induced hiccups. Methods: We report a case of aripiprazole-induced hiccups in a 32-year-old male diagnosed with Somatic Symptom Disorder per DSM-5 criteria.A comprehensive literature review was conducted, identifying 29 case reports of aripiprazole-induced hiccups. Patient demographics, dosage, onset and duration of hiccups, and management strategies were analyzed. Results: Aripiprazole-i

BACKGROUND: A hiccup is a common well-documented physiologic process that occurs due to a sudden involuntary contraction of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, with subsequent rapid closure of the glottis. While acute hiccups, lasting < 48 hours, are experienced by almost all individuals at some point in their life, prolonged hiccups lasting > 48 hours, or intractable hiccups lasting > 1 month, are quite rare and may significantly impact a person's quality of life. We would like to share a report of a stellate ganglion (SG) block relieving the discomfort of a patient suffering from idiopath

Hiccups, also called hiccoughs, are sudden, involuntary and rapid expulsion of air from the lungs with synchronous closure of the glottis causing blockade of the air flow. Hiccups may be induced by a multitude of etiologies such as central nervous disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular disorders, psychogenic factors, and metabolic disorders. Hiccups induced by medications are rare. The diagnosis of drug-induced hiccup is difficult. The exact mechanism responsible for this adverse drug reaction is still unknown. Herein, we report the first case of cefotaxime-induced hiccups and b

Thyrotoxicosis manifests when excess levels of thyroid hormone act on different tissues throughout the body. Excess hormone levels can be related to endogenous production or exogenous ingestion and can present differently in patients. It has been theorized that high levels of thyroxine can irritate the neuroanatomical hiccup center leading to persistent hiccups. Although extremely rare, physicians should be aware of this entity to allow for proper diagnosis and management. Here, we discuss a rare case of thyrotoxicosis after an epidural steroid injection presenting with intractable hiccups.

Abdominal hiccups are often masked by abdominal epilepsy (AE) in clinical settings. Spontaneous arrhythmic muscular movements sometimes raise the suspicion for abdominal myoclonus as well. AE is an atypical and rare cause of seizure disorder. It is a manifestation of different transient abdominal complaints correlating with abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG) changes and adequate response to anti-epileptic drugs. We present a case of an 80-year-old female who presented with an episode of tonic-clonic seizure that lasted for almost 10 minutes. The patient was confused and had a facial droop. Sh

While occasional hiccups are normal, their persistent recurrence is distressing and may have an underlying aetiology. Patients with recurrent hiccups may undergo a long journey and see many physicians before the diagnosis is finally made. The purpose of this report is to increase awareness of central nervous system lesions as a possible cause for recurrent hiccups and provide an illustrative case of an otherwise fit man presenting with ongoing hiccups caused by a medullary haemangioblastoma.

A hiccup is a myoclonic jerk of the diaphragm, and cases of hiccups may last for more than 48 hours (persistent hiccups) or even more than 2 months (intractable hiccups). Current pharmacologic treatment of persistent or intractable hiccups mainly includes antidopaminergic drugs. We describe the case of a 60-year-old man with a recent diagnosis of right insular ischemic stroke who presented with frequent, intense, and disabling hiccups for more than 1 month. As diagnosis of poststroke hiccups was assumed, the patient was treated over the next 6 months with adequate doses of various antipsychoti

BACKGROUND: Hiccups although a common annoyance of life, have been linked with significant morbidity and even death. There are numerous causes of prolonged hiccups, including diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Hiccups are reported to represent an atypical manifestation of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
CASES: We report 4 cases of prolonged hiccups in patients who failed to respond to initial treatment with abortive neurologic medications and who subsequently improved on proton-pump inhibitors. Endoscopic examination revealed severe reflux esophagitis.
CONCLUSION: Hiccups are an atypic

CASE: A 41-year-old woman with a large uterine myoma presented with recurrent and intractable hiccup boutsfor 1 year. The hiccups resolved spontaneously after hysterectomy.
CONCLUSION: A uterine leiomyoma, especially the subserosal type, might become a possible etiology of hiccups when large enough to cause irritation of the vagus or phrenic nerve.

Intractable hiccups are debilitating and usually a result of some underlying disease. Initial management includes vagal maneuvers and pharmacotherapy. When hiccups persist despite medical therapy, surgical intervention rarely is pursued. Cases described in the literature cite successful phrenic nerve blockade, crush injury, or percutaneous phrenic nerve pacing. The authors report on a case of intractable hiccups occurring after a posterior fossa stroke, Complete resolution of the spasms has been achieved to date following the placement of a vagus nerve stimulator.

OBJECTIVE: We describe a case of persistent hiccups after attempted interscalene brachial plexus block.
CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old man was admitted for arthroscopic repair of a right shoulder injury. An interscalene block was attempted in the preoperative area and combined with general anesthesia for surgery. The procedure lasted 5(1/4) hours. After transfer to the recovery room, the patient complained of severe right shoulder pain and had no discernible sensory or motor block. He was noted to be hiccuping. The patient was discharged home the following morning but returned 2 days later compla

Although the most frequent presentation of herpes zoster involves sensory neurons, motor and autonomic symptomatology is also known to occur in this disease. An unusual symptom of hiccups is described here. Other infrequent manifestations of this common illness, including the Ramsay Hunt syndrome, herpes zoster ophthalmicus, urinary and fecal retention, sexual dysfunction, and zoster sine herpete, are reviewed. Greater awareness of unusual presentations of herpes zoster is necessary for proper diagnosis and timely management of complications that may otherwise lead to disability and serious lo
