The neighborhood effects on the online financial investment of rural households: Evidence from China.

Neighborhood effects are a common strategy for rural households to deal with irrational situations such as deficient information and ability. Based on the 2019 CHFS survey data, we designed a Probit model to verify whether neighborhood effects exist in the online financial investment of rural households. Our paper constructs a multiple mediation model to explore its mechanism. Otherwise, we execute the heterogeneity analysis by dividing the total sample into groups. Our paper proved that (1) Rural households have significant neighborhood effects on online financial investment. (2) Heterogeneit

Beyond air pollution: a national assessment of cooking-related burns in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Household energy transitions have the potential to reduce the burden of several health outcomes but have narrowly focused on those mediated by reduced exposure to air pollution, despite concerns about the burden of injury outcomes. Here, we aimed to describe the country-level incidence of severe cooking-related burns in Ghana and identify household-level risk factors for adults and children. METHODS: We conducted a national household energy use survey including 7389 households across 370 enumeration areas in Ghana in 2020. In each household, a pretested version of the Clean Cook

Deprivation and limitations in daily life in new onset kidney disease: a population study.

BACKGROUND: Existing population research has evaluated inequities in health outcomes for people in deprived communities who have early kidney disease, but not the differences in their self-reported overall health and ability to manage daily life activities when they first present, or the additional burden for people of working age. Using their responses to the national Census in Scotland, we studied the self-reported overall health and impact on day-to-day life of people in deprived and affluent households who newly presented with evidence of kidney disease. METHODS: Of 458 897 adult North Sc

Factors related to knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding cervical cancer among Yemeni women.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer (CxCa), although preventable, is still among the most prevalent cancers in women. Mortality from this cancer is high, especially in low-income countries where preventive strategies are often lacking. We studied the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding CxCa among Yemeni women. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 among 399 women in five major hospitals in Sanaa, the capital city of Yemen. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires. We used logistic regression models to analyze the likelihood of h

Blood fluorocarbon levels following exposure to household aerosols.

Measurement of blood fluorocarbon levels was carried out in subjects exposed to a number of household aerosol products containing fluorocarbon gases as propellants. All aerosols were used according to manufacturers' recommendations. The general purpose of the study was to determine whether with normal routine exposure to a wide variety of household aerosol products fluorocarbon could be found in the blood and if so, to check the potential toxicity of the levels reached. Daily exposure to aerosols according to the study regimen lasted four consecutive weeks; this period was preceded and followe

Effectiveness of hygiene kit distribution to reduce cholera transmission in Kasaï-Oriental, Democratic Republic of Congo, 2018: a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Household contacts of cholera cases are at a greater risk of Vibrio cholerae infection than the general population. There is currently no agreed standard of care for household contacts, despite their high risk of infection, in cholera response strategies. In 2018, hygiene kit distribution and health promotion was recommended by Médecins Sans Frontières for admitted patients and accompanying household members on admission to a cholera treatment unit in the Democratic Republic of Congo. METHODS: To investigate the effectiveness of the intervention and risk factors for cholera infe

Invisible Household Labor and Ramifications for Adjustment: Mothers as Captains of Households.

We address the issue of invisible labor in the home by examining how the distribution of the mental and emotional labor inherent to managing the household between spouses may be linked with women's well-being, including their satisfaction with life, partner satisfaction, feelings of emptiness, and experiencing role overload. In a sample of 393 U.S. married/partnered mothers, mostly of upper-middle class backgrounds with dependent children at home, results showed that a majority of women reported that they alone assumed responsibility for household routines involving organizing schedules for th

A Qualitative Study of Factors That Influence Older Adults' Work on the Arduous Path to Spine Surgery.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Older adults worldwide are increasingly diagnosed with degenerative spine disease (DSD). Although older adults are frequently interacting with the healthcare system, clinicians are likely not aware of the many health-related activities, or patient work that older adults engage in to achieve their health goals. An understanding of patient work is needed to guide patient-oriented healthcare improvements for older people having surgery for DSD to achieve their desired health outcome. Our aim was to define factors in the patient work system that influence the patient work of o

Erognomic education on housework for women with upper limb repetitive strain injury (RSI): a conceptual representation of therapists' clinical reasoning.

BACKGROUND: Ergonomic education in housework that aims to facilitate behavior change is important for women with upper limb repetitive strain injury. Therapists usually conduct such programs based on implicit reasoning. Making this reasoning explicit is important in contributing to the profession's knowledge. AIM: To construct a conceptual representation of how occupational therapists make clinical decisions for such program. METHOD: Based on a constructivist-grounded theory methodology, data were collected through in-depth interviewing with 14 occupational therapists from a major hospital i

Can AIDS stigma be reduced to poverty stigma? Exploring Zimbabwean children's representations of poverty and AIDS.

OBJECTIVE: We use children's drawings to investigate social stigmatization of AIDS-affected and poverty-affected children by their peers, in the light of suggestions that the stigmatization of AIDS-affected children might derive more from the poverty experienced by these children than from their association with AIDS. METHODS: A qualitative study, in rural Zimbabwe, used draw-and-write techniques to elicit children's (10-12 years) representations of AIDS-affected children (n= 30) and poverty-affected children (n= 33) in 2009 and 2010 respectively. RESULTS: Representations of children affecte

Injury risk associated with physical demands and school environment characteristics among a cohort of custodial workers.

Few epidemiological studies have investigated the relationship between work exposures and injury risk among custodians. The relationship between injury risk and occupational physical demands (e.g. pushing/pulling, lifting) and school environment characteristics (e.g. school type, season) was investigated among a cohort of 581 school custodians over a 4-year period. In the final Poisson regression models, the risk of injury was associated with time spent in pushing/pulling tasks in a dose-response manner increasing to a five-fold risk among the highest quartile of exposure (risk ratio = 5.15, 9

Association between local food policy council coverage and longitudinal household food insufficiency during COVID-19, stratified by race, ethnicity, and income.

Many local food policy councils (FPCs) worked to increase food access during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objective was to determine whether households living in states with higher FPC coverage were less likely to experience food insufficiency during COVID-19 compared to households in states with lower local FPC coverage, and to analyze associations by race, ethnicity, and household income. We used a modified Poisson regression approach to estimate the prevalence of household food insufficiency in states with high and low FPC coverage as of 2020, adjusting for age and gender of the survey respon

Incidence, Impact, and Healthcare-Seeking Behavior for Extremity Fractures in Resource-Limited Settings: A Household Survey in Rural Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Limited research exists on the burden of extremity fractures in Sub-Saharan Africa. Underreporting is likely, as patients often seek out traditional bonesetters (TBSs). This study aims to determine the annual incidence and impact of extremity fractures, alongside health-seeking behavior of patients in rural Tanzania. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional household survey in Rorya district, Tanzania, enrolling 497 households with 2667 members, using spatial random sampling. We surveyed household heads regarding access to fracture care and fracture occurrence among household membe

An outbreak of paratyphoid fever in the UK associated with a fish-and-chip shop.

An outbreak of Salmonella paratyphi B infection in the UK associated with a fish-and-chip shop is reported. The source of infection for the first three cases was believed to be a food handler who was infected overseas 6 years earlier. His wife whose faeces and urine were originally culture negative continued to run the shop but subsequently her faeces became positive on one occasion. She was considered to have been the source of two further cases, and secondary household spread of infection from these two cases resulted in one symptomatic and two asymptomatic infections. A second household con
