Gender Differences in Violence and Other Human Rights Abuses Among Migrant Workers on the Thailand-Myanmar Border.

We describe human rights violations against migrant workers at the Thailand-Myanmar border, and evaluate differences by gender and industry. This mixed methods study pairs key informant interviews ( n = 40) with a cross-sectional quantitative survey of migrant workers from Myanmar ( n = 589) recruited via respondent-driven sampling. Key informants described significant hazards during migration, including deception, theft, and physical and sexual abuse, the latter primarily for women. Quantitative results confirmed prevalent mistreatment and abuse, with significant gender differences, most nota

Analysis of bone healing in a postoperative patient: skeletal evidence of medical neglect and human rights violations.

This study highlights complexities associated with postsurgical trauma interpretation of a 76-year-old female patient from a psychiatric institution in Mexico. The skeletal analysis identified complications from an unsuccessful surgical operation for an intertrochanteric fracture of the femur. An improperly placed surgical plate resulted in nonunion due to limited contact between fracture margins. However, it is unclear whether this resulted from surgical complications, ineffective postoperative care, or from the decedent's limited ability to follow postoperative care instructions. The Intersection of Human Rights, HIV and Sex Work: Implications for Ending AIDS in Thailand by 2030.

INTRODUCTION: Sex work significantly shapes the Thai economy and the HIV epidemic, yet its criminalization restricts access to health services and exacerbates human rights violations. This study examines experiences of stigma, discrimination, gender-based violence (GBV) and incarceration among sex workers (SWs), exploring how these factors intersect with HIV services. This research is a component of a larger study investigating factors associated with pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among SWs in Thailand. METHODS: We conducted a post hoc analysis of a cross-sectional survey (September-

Contemporary human rights violations in female sterilization care: legal and ethical considerations when coerced patients do consent.

In this piece we examine three forms of coercive or otherwise involuntary care that can occur with patient consent. To do so, we examine: (1) uninformed consent, (2) contingency-based consent and (3) constrained-market consent, amongst female sterilization patients. While there is broad recognition that "coercion" in sterilization care can manifest beyond instances of overt force and clarity on what constitutes coercion within clinical care, this has not translated to accountability. The current practice of identifying coercion through discrete civil cases may facilitate a narrow understanding

Challenging the US Supreme Court's Majority Ruling on Roe v. Wade at the International Human Rights Level.

This paper proposes that US human rights experts and abortion rights advocates challenge the striking down of Roe v. Wade in June 2022 by the majority of US Supreme Court justices because of the multiple human rights violations it has engendered. The paper has three parts. The first part summarizes the compelling response of the three dissenting Supreme Court justices to the majority ruling, which spells out those violations in detail. The second part offers a history of cases of violations of human rights related to abortion in other countries that have been heard and adjudicated by a range o

The impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the medico-legal and human rights of psychiatric patients.

The COVID-19 pandemic has raised significant concerns for population mental health and the effective provision of mental health services in the light of increased demands and barriers to service delivery [1]. Particular attention is being directed toward the possible neuropsychiatric sequelae of both COVID-19 and of the stringent societal mitigation steps deployed by national governments, concerns that are informed by historical increases in the incidence of psychotic disorders following influenza pandemics [2]. However, so far there has been scant attention paid to other important areas of ps

Human Rights Violations among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Southern Africa: Comparisons between Legal Contexts.

In 1994, South Africa approved a constitution providing freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation. Other Southern African countries, including Botswana, Malawi, and Namibia, criminalize same-sex behavior. Men who have sex with men (MSM) have been shown to experience high levels of stigma and discrimination, increasing their vulnerability to negative health and other outcomes. This paper examines the relationship between criminalization of same-sex behavior and experiences of human rights abuses by MSM. It compares the extent to which MSM in peri-urban Cape Town experience human r

Data-Driven Human Rights: Using Dual Loyalty Trainings to Promote the Care of Vulnerable Patients in Jail.

Dual loyalty is an omnipresent feature of correctional health. As part of a human rights quality improvement committee, and utilizing the unique advantage of a fully integrated electronic health record system, we undertook an assessment of dual loyalty in the New York City jail system. The evaluation revealed significant concerns about the extent to which the mental health service is involved in assessments that are part of the punishment process of the security apparatus. As a result, dual loyalty training was developed and delivered to all types of health staff in the jail system via anonymo

Development of the right colon and the peritoneal surface during the human fetal period: human ontogeny of the right colon.

BACKGROUND: Development of the digestive tract during the human fetal period has been the subject of many studies, but there are no works that study the ontogeny of both the right colon and the peritoneum. METHODS: Based on the dissections of adult male cadavers and human fetuses, the aim of this anatomical study was to demonstrate the rules of the morpho-functional group, consisting of the right colon and its peritoneum surface, in human ontogeny. RESULTS: The morphology of the right colon results from a rotational motion, inducting the migration of the cecum in the right iliac fossa and fo

Habilitation and assistive devices for persons with disabilities: a new approach to respect for human rights and inclusion.

In recent years, the development of assistive technologies has profoundly changed the idea of what it means to be human and what humans are capable of, in particular for persons with disabilities; the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) highlights that disability is a social construction. New concepts have been developed, such as empowerment, enabling, inclusion, habilitation, and human rights, that have changed the meaning of making tools available to encourage full participation, hoping to solve challenges of today, such as barriers, obstacles, and d

Cisnormativity, human rights and vulnerability of young transgender women to HIV: An analysis based on their youth trajectories.

In Brazil, young transgender women (YTW) bear a disproportionate burden of HIV, which persists despite technological advances in biomedical prevention. This study explores how rights violations across different areas of life shape YTW's vulnerability to HIV through an intersectional lens. We conducted 13 in-depth interviews and one group interview with YTW participating in an HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) cohort. Thematic analysis with intersectional sensibility focused on six dimensions: family, schooling, romantic-sexual relationships, friendships, work, and health. The results show th

BACKGROUND: Respect for human rights and bioethical principles in prisons is a crucial aspect of society and is proportional to the well-being of the general population. To date, these ethical principles have been lacking in prisons and prisoners are victims of abuse with strong repercussions on their physical and mental health. A human rights assessment of menopausal women's access to age- and gender-sensitive nondiscriminatory health care in prison.

IMPORTANCE AND OBJECTIVE: Women represent about 6% of the global prison population of 11 million. The female prison population has increased significantly in the past decade. Where attention is devoted to women's unique sexual and reproductive health needs in prison, this is largely focused on menstruation management and ante/postnatal care. There is no explicit guidance regarding imprisoned menopausal women's health care in the United Nations normative standards of detention (Mandela Rules, Bangkok Rules). A human rights assessment of menopausal women's access to age- and gender-sensitive non

Consumer protection in drug policy: The human rights case for safe supply as an element of harm reduction.

The dramatic increase in overdose mortality in North America since 2000 and spikes in harmful drug use in other parts of the world in recent decades challenge drug policy-makers to broaden their definition of harm reduction. Ensuring access to a safe supply of drugs for those obtaining adulterated drugs from illegal markets must be an essential element of preventing overdose and reducing the harms of overdose. Safe supply initiatives, including but not limited to the provision of legally regulated medical-grade heroin or hydromorphone in humane and non-stigmatizing ways, are well justified by

Health, Human Rights, and the Transformation of Punishment: South African Litigation to Address HIV and Tuberculosis in Prisons.

South Africa experiences the world's highest HIV burden and one of the highest burdens for tuberculosis (TB). People in prison are particularly vulnerable to these diseases. Globally, and internally in South Africa, increased attention is being paid to HIV and TB treatment and prevention in prisons, with the public health community arguing for reforms that improve respect for the human rights of incarcerated people, for example, by calling for the reduction of overcrowding and unnecessary incarceration. Despite the retributive rhetoric that is popular among politicians and the public, the cons

A human rights view on access to controlled substances for medical purposes under the international drug control framework.

The world is confronted with a major public health deficit caused by poor access to controlled essential medicines under the international drug control framework. This is affecting millions of patients on a daily basis and resulting in numerous human rights violations. The present review contextualises this deficit from a human rights perspective. Drug control efforts are informed by a twofold objective stemming from the double nature of scheduled substances: free access for medical purposes should be ensured, though non-medical use of substances such as opium should be restricted. The interna

From mandatory to voluntary testing: balancing human rights, religious and cultural values, and HIV/AIDS prevention in Ghana.

This paper examines efforts by some churches in Ghana to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. The analysis is based on focus group discussions with two groups of men and two groups of women, along with in-depth interviews with 13 pastors and marriage counsellors in the churches studied. In response to government and public criticisms about human rights violations, churches that previously imposed mandatory HIV testing on members planning to marry now have voluntary testing programmes. However, the results suggest that what the churches refer to as voluntary testing may not be truly voluntary. Cultur

The legal determination of the sexual identity of a post-operative transsexual seen as a human rights issue.

Following a definition of transsexualism, the acknowledged medical treatment and the groups of persons who may require sex changes are considered. The medical and surgical procedures involved in a sex change and the dangers inherent in such procedures are then briefly discussed. The legal implications of a sex change in various countries are touched upon with reference to several cases. The discussion is then extended to human rights aspects, with a report of a case considered by the European Commission of Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights. The paper closes with a summary of

Psychosis, human rights, and legal frameworks: global perspectives, with a focus on low-income and middle-income countries.

The rights of people with psychosis continue to be violated globally, often through practices that are legally and socially sanctioned, including coercive treatments and systemic discrimination. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) has catalysed attention to rights-based mental health policy and practice, yet substantial gaps remain between international standards and lived realities. We conducted a systematic search of the literature and a structured narrative synthesis of global evidence on psychosis, human rights, and legal frameworks, focusing on low-income and
