An optical meta-image-processor for enhanced imaging through strongly scattering media.

Strongly scattering conditions are detrimental to imaging. Conventional methods rely solely on post-processing techniques to enhance the ballistic components of an obscured target to recover the image; however, they struggle in complex conditions where the ballistic components are heavily overwhelmed by scattering. In this work, we present an optical meta-image-processor (MIP) that tailors the scattered point spread function of the imaging system to enable high-quality, deep imaging through strongly scattering media. The MIP performs both Laplacian and Gaussian operations in a single device, e

Harnessing platelets as functional vectors for contrast enhanced ultrasound imaging and fluorescence imaging.

The recent progress in the development of highly biocompatible nanoplatforms mostly encompasses the use of biological excipients such as red blood cells, cancer cell membranes, and also platelets. Such specialized vectors, if mimicked correctly, have intrinsic ability to navigate through the biological system and perform their intended action without eliciting any cascade of inflammatory processes. Naturally, platelets have been found to accumulate in the wound sites and also interact with circulating tumor cells (CTCs). Inspired by the targeting ability of platelets and the clinical success o

Enhancing mouse fundus imaging with OCT embedding medium: Prolonging imaging duration and improving image quality.

Fundus diseases are common and serious ophthalmic conditions, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and others, which can lead to severe vision loss. Mice, widely used as experimental animal models, play a crucial role in ophthalmic disease research. However, existing mouse fundus imaging techniques encounter several challenges during prolonged, high-precision imaging, such as corneal whitening, poor optical quality, and motion artifacts. In this study, we propose an innovative method based on an OCT embedding medium that, when applied to the mouse corneal surface, im

Spectrum aided vision enhancer enhances mucosal visualization by hyperspectral imaging in capsule endoscopy.

Narrow-band imaging (NBI) is more efficient in detecting early gastrointestinal cancer than white light imaging (WLI). NBI technology is available only in conventional endoscopy, but unavailable in magnetic-assisted capsule endoscopy (MACE) systems due to MACE's small size and obstacles in image processing issues. MACE is an easy, safe, and convenient tool for both patients and physicians to avoid the disadvantages of conventional endoscopy. Enabling NBI technology in MACE is mandatory. We developed a novel method to improve mucosal visualization using hyperspectral imaging (HSI) known as Spec

Assessment of chitosan-coated zinc cobalt ferrite nanoparticle as a multifunctional theranostic platform facilitating pH-sensitive drug delivery and OCT image contrast enhancement.

Colorectal cancer (CC) is one of the most predominant malignancies in the world, with the current treatment regimen consisting of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Chemotherapeutic drugs, such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), have gained popularity as first-line antineoplastic agents against CC but have several drawbacks, including variable absorption through the gastrointestinal tract, inconsistent liver metabolism, short half-life, toxicological reactions in several organ systems, and others. Therefore, herein, we develop chitosan-coated zinc-substituted cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CZ

Nonneoplastic enhancing lesions mimicking intracanalicular acoustic neuroma on gadolinium-enhanced MR images.

The authors describe five patients with nonneoplastic lesions of the facial and/or vestibulocochlear nerves that demonstrated focal enhancement within the internal auditory canal on magnetic resonance (MR) images. MR and surgical findings for four patients with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss and one with Ramsay Hunt syndrome were reviewed. Three patients with hearing loss underwent surgical exploration and decompression of the internal auditory canal. The MR findings in all four patients with hearing loss were similar: Focal enhancement of the internal auditory canal was depicted on pos

Prominent dural enhancement adjacent to nonmeningiomatous malignant lesions on contrast-enhanced MR images.

Prominent dural enhancement was noted in 10 (16%) of 61 superficial malignant intracranial tumors studied with contrast-enhanced MR imaging during a 2-year period. Included were six glioblastomas, three parenchymal metastases, and one case of dural metastasis. Seven patients had surgery. In four, there was extensive leptomeningeal invasion in the center of the lesion. In two of these lesions there was firm attachment of the center of the tumor to the dura, but without dural invasion despite extensive external carotid artery supply to the tumor in one case. In two cases the overlying dura was n

MR Imaging of Joint Infection and Inflammation with Emphasis on Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MR Imaging.

Contrast-enhanced MR imaging (CE-MR imaging) is recommended for diagnosis and monitoring of infectious and most inflammatory joint diseases. CE-MR imaging clearly differentiates soft and bony tissue from fluid collections and infectious debris. To improve imaging information, a dynamic CE-MR imaging sequence (DCE-MR imaging) sequence can be applied using fast T1-weighted sequential image acquisition during contrast injection. Use of DCE-MR imaging allows robust extraction of quantitative information regarding blood flow and capillary permeability, especially when dedicated analysis methods and

Beyond morphology: functional imaging of the liver with gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.

Chronic liver diseases (CLD) are highly prevalent. Early diagnosis and staging of hepatic dysfunction are essential for optimal treatment decisions. While conventional imaging primarily evaluates morphology and focal liver lesions, gadoxetic acid (GA)-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides additional functional information by assessing hepatocellular uptake and biliary excretion. Hepatocyte uptake depends largely on sinusoidal membrane transporters (OATP1B1/1B3), while excretion into bile canaliculi is mediated by MRP2. In liver dysfunction and cirrhosis, both processes may be impa

Combination of Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography and Fundus Images for Glaucoma Screening.

Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve and can lead to irreversible loss of peripheral vision gradually and even blindness without treatment. Thus, diagnosing glaucoma in the early stage is essential for treatment. In this paper, an automatic method for early glaucoma screening is proposed. The proposed method combines structural parameters and textural features extracted from enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) images and fundus images. The method first segments anterior the lamina cribrosa surface (ALCS) based on region-aware strategy and residual U
