Through the Eye: Retinal Changes of Prenatal Mercury Exposure in Grassy Narrows First Nation, Canada.

Since the 1960s, Grassy Narrows First Nation, Canada, has been exposed to methylmercury (MeHg) from fish consumption following Hg discharge from a chloralkali plant. Prenatal exposure to MeHg is known to affect the neurodevelopment of fetuses and the retina is sensitive to neurodevelopmental damage. The multidisciplinary, cross-sectional Niibin study, developed with Grassy Narrows First Nations, included visual examinations with retinal evaluation using optical coherence tomography (OCT). The present analyses focused on the 59 participants (116 eyes) with umbilical cord Hg measurements, sample

Geographical variation and factors associated with gastric cancer in Manitoba.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the spatial disparities and factors associated with gastric cancer (GC) Incidence in Manitoba. METHODS: We combined information from Manitoba Cancer registry and Census data to obtain an age-sex adjusted relative risk (IRR) of GC incidence. We geocoded the IRR to the 96 regional health authority districts (RHADs) using the postal code conversion file (PCCF). Bayesian spatial and spatio-temporal Poisson regression models were used for the analysis. RESULTS: Adjusting for the effect of socio-economic score index (SESI), Indigenous, and immigrant population, 25 distr

Beyond Invisible: Confronting the Policy and Practice Void in Eating Disorder Prevention and Treatment for Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Indigenous populations internationally experience eating disorders (EDs) at similar or higher rates than colonizing majority populations. In Canada, emerging evidence suggests that this is also true among First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) populations. However, most existing recommendations and best practices for ED prevention, early intervention, and treatment do not consider unique contextual and cultural factors that are relevant to FNMI Peoples, such as the effects of historical and ongoing colonialism. This scoping review aimed to map policy-related documents on the prevention, early

Sexual abuse, residential schooling and probable pathological gambling among Indigenous Peoples.

Sexual abuse leads to short-term and long-lasting pervasive outcomes, including addictions. Among Indigenous Peoples, sexual abuse experienced in the context of residential schooling may have led to unresolved grief that is contributing to social problems, such as pathological (disordered) gambling. The aim of this study is to investigate the link between child sexual abuse, residential schooling and probable pathological gambling. The participants were 358 Indigenous persons (54.2% women) aged between 18 and 87 years, from two communities and two semi-urban centers in Quebec (Canada). Probabl

The Efficacy of a Health Promotion Intervention for Indigenous Women: Reclaiming Our Spirits.

Indigenous women globally are subjected to high rates of multiple forms of violence, including intimate partner violence (IPV), yet there is often a mismatch between available services and Indigenous women's needs and there are few evidence-based interventions specifically designed for this group. Building on an IPV-specific intervention (Intervention for Health Enhancement After Leaving [iHEAL]), "Reclaiming Our Spirits" (ROS) is a health promotion intervention developed to address this gap. Offered over 6 to 8 months in a partnership between nurses and Indigenous Elders, nurses worked indivi

Racial disparities in HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness and uptake among white, Black, and Indigenous men in Canada: Analysis of data from the I'm Ready national HIV self-testing study.

OBJECTIVES: Black and Indigenous men in Canada continue to experience significant and disproportionate burden of new HIV infection. The purpose of this study was to understand racial differences in PrEP awareness and use, and PrEP cascade among white, Black, and Indigenous men in Canada with the intention to provide evidence for immediate action in our publicly funded health care system. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis (n = 4294) of cross-sectional data from the I'm Ready national HIV self-testing research program launched in June 2021 and running through December 2023. Healthcare Provider Experiences Delivering Dementia Care in Indigenous Communities: Challenges and Recommendations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little is known regarding the effects of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) in in American Indian and First Nation (AI/FN) communities in the US and Canada. Yet, research suggests FN populations in Canada experience 34% higher dementia rates and over half of US-based Indigenous adults demonstrate incident cognitive impairment, including dementia due to AD and/or cerebrovascular disease. Already higher than the general population, rates will increase as Indigenous populations age. The Indigenous Cultural Understandings of ADRD-Research and Engagement

Clinical and Community Factors' Correlation With NT-proBNP in First Nations: A Cross-sectional Analysis of the CAHHM-FN Cohort.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, Indigenous populations face inequities in cardiovascular care, and have disparate heart failure (HF) outcomes. N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a biomarker that has been reported to predict subclinical left ventricular (LV) dysfunction, clinical HF, and cardiovascular events. Because of disparities in HF outcomes and care between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Canada, in this study we sought to understand the unique sociocultural, clinical, and community factors that are associated with circulating NT-proBNP levels. METHODS: We conducted

Patterns of cost-related medication underuse among Canadian adults with cancer: a cross-sectional study using survey data.

BACKGROUND: Cost-related medication underuse (CRMU) has been reported within the general population in Canada. In this study, we assessed patterns of CRMU among Canadian adults with cancer. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study using survey data. We accessed data sets from the 2015/16 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) and reviewed the records of adults (≥ 18 yr) with a history of cancer who were prescribed medication in the previous 12 months. We collected information about sociodemographic features, health behaviours and CRMU, and conducted a multivariable logistic regression analys

The antimicrobial potential of traditional remedies of Indigenous peoples from Canada against MRSA planktonic and biofilm bacteria in wound infection mimetic conditions.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the leading cause of wound infections, often progressing into serious invasive bloodstream infections. MRSA disproportionately affects Indigenous peoples in Canada with higher rates of skin and wound infections, an example of persistent gaps in health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples precipitated by the legacy of colonialism. Conversely, Indigenous peoples have long used natural remedies for infections and other diseases; however, their knowledge was rarely considered for modern medicine. The stagnant antibiotic discov

An unexpected surprise in a common boil.

Cutaneous myiasis (myia: Greek word for fly) is an infestation of fly maggots in the skin. A case of human botfly (Dermatobia hominis) myiasis presenting to a Canadian emergency department is described. Typically, it presents as an apparent persistently infected skin abscess or insect bite. As the botfly is indigenous only to Central and South America, the condition is unfamiliar to most North American physicians. However, the rapidity of international air travel permits this exotic tropical infestation to present in any region. Obtaining a history of recent travel to an endemic area is the ke

Pediatric teleophthalmology screening: a scoping review of global evidence and implications for Canada.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, nearly 90% of children under 6 have never received a comprehensive eye exam, despite national guidelines recommending at least 1 before age 5. Missed diagnoses of amblyopia, strabismus, and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) contribute to preventable vision loss and inequities. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize evidence on pediatric teleophthalmology screening, evaluating performance, feasibility, and economic considerations, with attention to relevance in the Canadian context. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Scopus (2005-2025) for stu

Childhood Demographics and Socioeconomic Conditions Predict Reproduction 15 Years Later.

Psychosocial acceleration theory (PAT) posits that experiencing harsh and unpredictable environments during childhood cues the development of earlier and more frequent reproductive events. However, this developmental association has not been tested in large human populations. Visible minorities and Indigenous people are also subjected to harsher and more unpredictable circumstances than the general population. These circumstances might not be detected in common measures used in PAT literature. In four studies, we tested whether an exploratory analytical approach using measures of harshness and

"I want to hear you talk with your heart": perspectives on receiving and providing mental wellness supports during the COVID-19 pandemic within a First Nation community in Canada.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges to local health systems, widening gaps in support and disrupting available care. Within Canada, First Nations communities have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, which exacerbated an already strained system of appropriate services and supports. As part of a broader community-based participatory research project (The First Nations Wellness Initiative), the aim of this research was to explore how the COVID-19 pandemic affected people seeking and providing mental wellness supports within a First Nations community,

Integrated Prenatal Care for Women Living With HIV: Primary Care Outcomes in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan has the highest rate of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections in Canada. Of those newly diagnosed, 56% identify as female, 76% identify as Indigenous, and 71% report a history of intravenous drug use. These statistics are strikingly different compared with Canadian data. This brief communication describes prenatal care provided to women living with HIV at an interdisciplinary primary care clinic in Saskatchewan, demonstrating that, despite facing great barriers such as housing insecurity, substance use, and institutionalized racism, women living with HIV can have posit

Investigating the associations of acute psychedelic experiences and changes in racial trauma symptoms, psychological flexibility, and substance use among People with Racial and Ethnic Minoritized Identities in the United States and Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests that psychedelics may serve as a therapeutic approach to reduce substance use; however, people with racial and ethnic minoritized (REM) identities are often excluded from this research. We investigated whether psychedelic use affects other substance use among REM people and whether perceived changes in psychological flexibility and racial trauma mediates this association. METHODS: REM people in the United States and Canada (N = 211; 32 % Black, 29 % Asian, 18 % American Indian/Indigenous Canadian, 21 % Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander; 57 % female; mean age = 3

An unconditional prenatal income supplement is associated with improved birth and early childhood outcomes among First Nations children in Manitoba, Canada: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In Manitoba, Canada, low-income pregnant women are eligible for the Healthy Baby Prenatal Benefit, an unconditional income supplement of up to CAD $81/month, during their latter two trimesters. Our objective was to determine the impact of the Healthy Baby Prenatal Benefit on birth and early childhood outcomes among Manitoba First Nations women and their children. METHODS: We used administrative data to identify low-income First Nations women who gave birth 2003-2011 (n = 8209), adjusting for differences between women who received (n = 6103) and did not receive the Healthy Baby Pre
