Biomechanical analysis of two runners who developed leg injuries during a six-week transition to maximal running shoes: A case series.

Achilles tendinopathy (AT) and medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) are two of the most common running-related injuries. In a previous study investigating running biomechanics before and after a six-week transition to maximal running shoes, two runners dropped out of this study due to Achilles pain and shin pain, respectively. The purpose of this case series was to investigate running biomechanics in those two runners, identifying potential causes for injury in relation to maximal shoe use. Running biomechanics were collected in a laboratory setting for these two runners wearing both a maximal

Passive leg raising in brain injury patients within the neurointensive care unit. A prospective trial.

INTRODUCTION: In critically ill brain-injured patients maintaining balanced fluid management is a crucial part of critical care. Many factors influence the relationship between fluid management, cerebral blood flow and cerebral oxygenation. Passive leg raising (PLR)-induced changes predict fluid responsiveness in the majority of non-neurological ICU patients. In patients with intracranial lesions, PLR testing has been hypothesized to increase intracranial pressure (ICP), although data are lacking. We wanted to investigate the feasibility of PLR with expected intracranial pressure increase, acc

Leg Stiffness, Joint Stiffness, and Running-Related Injury: Evidence From a Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The spring-like behavior of the leg and the joints of the lower body during running are thought to influence a wide range of physiologic and mechanical phenomena, including susceptibility to overuse injury. If leg and joint stiffness are associated with running-related injuries, altering joint or leg stiffness may be a useful avenue for injury rehabilitation and injury prevention programs. PURPOSE: To test the associations between running-related injury and leg stiffness, knee stiffness, and ankle stiffness in a prospective study of recreational runners. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort stud

Influence of the trunk position on knee kinematics during the single-leg landing: implications for injury prevention.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of the trunk position during the single-leg landing on the knee angle and muscle activity. Forty healthy university students (20 men and 20 women) performed right single-leg landings from a 40 cm-high platform with the trunk in neutral, flexion, extension, and right and left lateral flexion. Knee flexion and valgus angles were determined by two-dimensional video analysis, and rectus femoris (RF) and biceps femoris (BF) muscle activities were assessed. The knee flexion angle was significantly higher in the trunk-flexion position

Symmetry does not Indicate Recovery: Single-leg Hop Before and After a Lower Extremity Injury.

Current recommendations for return-to-play decision-making involve comparison of the injured limb to the uninjured limb. However, the use of the uninjured limb as a comparison for hop testing lacks empirical evidence. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of lower extremity injury on limb symmetry and performance on the single-leg hop for distance. Two-hundred thirty-six adolescent athletes completed the single-leg hop for distance before the beginning of the season (pre-injury). Forty-four adolescent athletes sustained a lower extremity injury (22 ankle and 12 knee) and

Variability of Leg Kinematics during Overground Walking in Persons with Chronic Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury.

Incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) often leads to partial disruption of spinal pathways that are important for motor control of walking. Persons with iSCI present with deficits in walking ability in part because of inconsistent leg kinematics during stepping. Although kinematic variability is important for normal walking, growing evidence indicates that excessive variability may limit walking ability and increase reliance on assistive devices (AD) after iSCI. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of iSCI-induced impairments on kinematic variability during overground walking. We

Single leg squat test and its relationship to dynamic knee valgus and injury risk screening.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity injuries are common in athletes. Valid tests to assess for risk of injury that are easily performed during a preparticipation sports physical examination are lacking. Two-dimensional (2D) analysis of the drop-jump test can identify athletes at risk, but it is too expensive and cumbersome to use in this setting. OBJECTIVE: To identify if those who perform a "positive"(abnormal postures) single leg squat (SLS) test also exhibit greater "dynamic valgus" on the 2D drop-jump test. Our secondary purpose was to assess whether group differences in gender, age, or body mass

Single-leg drop landing motor control strategies following acute ankle sprain injury.

No research currently exists investigating the effect of acute injury on single-limb landing strategies. The aim of the current study was to analyze the coordination strategies of participants in the acute phase of lateral ankle sprain (LAS) injury. Thirty-seven participants with acute, first-time LAS and 19 uninjured participants completed a single-leg drop landing task on both limbs. Three-dimensional kinematic (angular displacement) and sagittal plane kinetic (moment-of-force) data were acquired for the joints of the lower extremity from 200 ms pre-initial contact (IC) to 200 ms post-IC. [Morphometric parameters of hepatic lobule vessels in mice during the restorative period after leg injury].

The diameters of the hepatic lobule vessels (interlobular veins, central veins, interlobular arteries, intralobular sinusoidal capillaries, interlobular bile ducts) were been studied 3, 7 and 28 days after shin bones fracture in CBA mice (n=30). Most pronounced changes of morphometric parameters indicative of hemodynamic disturbances, were found 3 days after the trauma. The increase of the diameter of central, interlobulat veins and sinusoidal capillaries took place, together with the decrease of the diameter of interlobular arteries, which, probably, promoted the reduction of arterial blood s

Spinal cord injury as a trigger to develop periodic leg movements during sleep: an evolutionary perspective.

The primary trigger to periodic limb movement (PLM) during sleep is still unknown. Its association with the restless legs syndrome (RLS) is established in humans and was reported in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients classified by the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) as A. Its pathogenesis has not been completely unraveled, though recent advances might enhance our knowledge about those malfunctions. PLM association with central pattern generator (CPG) is one of the possible pathologic mechanisms involved. This article reviewed the advances in PLM and RLS genetics, the evolution of CPG

The effect of leg fracture level and vehicle front-end geometry on pedestrian knee injury and response.

In this study a MADYMO (mathematical dynamic modelling) model has been used to identify the influence of leg fracture on the injuries sustained by the pedestrian during front end impact with a vehicle. A factorial study of a MADYMO pedestrian and vehicle model are used to investigate the effect of different leg fracture tolerances, geometry, and vehicle compliance on the criteria measured in the European Enhanced Vehicle-safety Committee (EEVC) pedestrian safety tests. These criteria include knee bending, knee shear response, and lower leg bone (tibia) acceleration. The main study examines the

Epidemiology of adolescent runners: non-rearfoot strike is associated with the Achilles tendon and lower leg injury.

BACKGROUND: Foot strike patterns during running are classified into two types: rearfoot strike (RFS) and non-rearfoot strike (NRFS). These patterns are considered biomechanical risk factors for running-related injuries (RRIs). However, limited research exists on the prevalence or incidence of RRIs associated with different foot strike patterns, particularly within training or clinical practice contexts. Therefore, this epidemiological study aimed to investigate the prevalence and injury risk ratio (IRR) of RRIs concerning different foot strike patterns. METHODS: A total of 182 male Japanese a
