The in vitro 3D culture of intestinal epithelium is a valuable resource in the study of its function. Organoid culture exploits stem cells' ability to regenerate and produce differentiated epithelium. Intestinal organoid models from rodent or human tissue are widely available whereas large animal models are not. Livestock enteric and zoonotic diseases elicit significant morbidity and mortality in animal and human populations. Therefore, livestock species-specific models may offer novel insights into host-pathogen interactions and disease responses. Bovine and porcine jejunum were obtained from

Human anthrax cases reported in the country of Georgia increased 75% from 2011 (n = 81) to 2012 (n = 142). This increase prompted a case-control investigation using 67 culture- or PCR-confirmed cases and 134 controls matched by residence and gender to investigate risk factor(s) for infection during the month before case onset. Independent predictors most strongly associated with disease in the multivariable modelling were slaughtering animals [odds ratio (OR) 7·3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2·9-18·1, P 1 km; 15 (12%) of 125 had sick livestock; and 11 (9%) of 128 respondents reported finding

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne zoonotic disease. Over the past decade, CCHF cases in humans have emerged in Turkey and reemerged in the Balkan countries, Ukraine and Tajikistan. Occupational contact with infected livestock has been recognized as a common cause of the disease. A cross-sectional seroprevalence study in livestock was conducted in farming communities of an endemic area in Bulgaria, southeastern Europe. Overall, 72% of the tested animals were positive for IgG antibodies to CCHF virus. By the time the animals were one-year old almost 50% had serologic eviden

Q fever is a widespread zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii, an obligate intracellular gram-negative bacterium. The investigation of C. burnetii infection in Zambian livestock was carried out using molecular detection techniques. A total of 489 cattle and 53 goat blood samples were collected from Chama, Chongwe, Monze, and Petauke districts in Zambia. Molecular screening by polymerase chain reaction was performed using C. burnetii-species-specific primers. In total, 38 cattle and 4 goat samples were positive. The prevalence of C. burnetii differed among the four sites, with Chama (Eastern pro

Waterborne outbreaks caused by Cryptosporidium and Giardia are well documented, while the public health implications for foodborne illness from these parasites have not been adequately considered. Cryptosporidium and Giardia are common in domestic livestock, where young animals can have a high prevalence of infection, shedding large numbers of oocysts and cysts. Molecular epidemiological studies have advanced our knowledge on the distribution of Cryptosporidium and Giardia species and genotypes in specific livestock. This has enabled better source tracking of contaminated foods. Livestock gene

This paper summarises the progress towards vaccine development against the major blood-feeding nematodes of man and livestock, the hookworms and Haemonchus contortus, respectively. The impact of the diseases and the drivers for vaccine development are summarized as well as the anticipated impact of the host immune response on vaccine design. The performance requirements are discussed and progress towards these objectives using defined larval and adult antigens, many of these being shared between species. Specific examples include the Ancylostoma secreted proteins and homologues in Haemonchus a

Echinococcus granulosus infection is a problem of public health in livestock-rearing regions of Latin America, like in Peru. This species is characterized by the morphometry of the large and small rostellar hooks in both metacestodes and adult worms. The aim of this work was to study biometrical characteristics of rostellar hooks in hydatid cysts (lung and liver) from some Peruvian provinces (Arequipa, Cuzco, Huancavelica, Junin and Puno). The biometrical analysis was obtained in a digital system for image analysis. The following parameters were studied: area, perimeter, length and width total

Many New Zealand soils are naturally deficient in cobalt and/or selenium and/or copper, or are naturally high in molybdenum. Livestock grazing pasture grown on such soils may be deficient in one or more of these trace elements. In the 1940s and 1950s, New Zealand researchers were at the forefront of research to define the cause of trace-element related ill-thrift and clinical diseases like white muscle disease, peat scours and enzootic ataxia. New Zealanders have devised production-related reference ranges for blood and liver copper, vitamin B12 and selenium that are used for the diagnosis and

INTRODUCTION: Emergency nurses routinely treat a wide variety of animal-related injuries, yet the trauma literature rarely addresses injuries associated with livestock.
METHODS: The purpose of this retrospective, descriptive study was to examine the incidence, demographics, severity, and other factors associated with trauma related to livestock in persons admitted to one central texas trauma center during a 5-year period. Patients were classified by activity at the time of injury. The following 5 categories were identified: cowboy, rancher, dude, standing near, and unidentified. Groups were f

The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential effects of livestock odors on the health and well-being of neighbors. Complaints of odor nuisance have become more frequent in communities surrounding areas with high concentrations of livestock. This increase in complaints from livestock odors parallels increased complaints of odor in general, including ammonia, diesel exhaust, beauty products, cleaners, and paints. Persons who report symptoms from odors generally find problems with many different types of odorous compounds. A review of recent studies suggests that the main complaints of h

The toxicity of Compound 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) livestock protection collars (LPCs) to sheep was investigated. Lambs wearing punctured LPCs were observed to determine dermal toxicity, sheep were fed hay treated with LPC solution to find a lethal concentration, hay treated with a lethal concentration was subjected to sun and simulated rain to assess weathering influences, and sheep were held on pasture treated with LPC solution to evaluate grazing effects. Five lambs that wore punctured LPCs for up to seven days showed no dermal erythema or edema, but three died after ingesting 1080 from L

A survey was conducted on the prevalence of Fasciola gigantica and Dicrocoelium hospes eggs in gall bladders of cattle and small ruminants (sheep and goats) slaughtered between November 1987 and December 1988 in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. Prevalence rates of 42.7% and 5.7% were recorded for F. gigantica and D. hospes eggs, respectively, in 246 cattle and 718 sheep and goats examined. Out of the 246 cattle examined, 52 (21.1%), 45 (18.3%) and 8 (3.3%) excreted eggs of F. gigantica, D. hospes and of the two species respectively. For sheep and goats, the prevalence of egg excretion was 28 (

An investigation of "mysterious" disease due to hydrocyanic acid (HCN) poisoning in livestock in this state was carried out. Detailed clinicopathological and pathological studies were conducted. Characteristic signs of acute tympany followed with profuse frothing, convulsions and dyspnea were recorded. Cynosis of the mucosa with characteristic anoxemic tissue changes and a high concentration of HCN in rumen content, feed and skeletal muscles were recorded. These were sufficient to establish the diagnosis. Successful treatment with a specific antidote was achieved, and further morbidity and mor

Drinking water quality is a critical determinant of livestock health and productivity, yet information on farmers' perceptions of water quality and associated livestock health outcomes in communal free-range production systems remains limited. This study investigated farmers' perceptions of livestock drinking water quality and identified factors associated with reported livestock illness and productivity losses attributed to poor drinking water quality in communal free-range ruminant. A cross-sectional survey of 240 livestock farmers was conducted using a structured questionnaire that covered

Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) are causing high morbidity and mortality for humans. Urban livestock keeping is still common in cities around the world. The animals may serve as reservoirs for zoonotic MBDs, which increase the risks for humans. Here we assess the knowledge and practices related to MBDs in households with livestock and without livestock and explore the perceptions of the health care sector about MBDs and livestock keeping in Hanoi city of Vietnam in a cross-sectional study. A quantitative survey was conducted including 513 households with and without livestock-keeping in six dis

In developing countries, estimates of the prevalence and diversity of Leptospira infections in livestock, an important but neglected zoonotic pathogen and cause of livestock productivity loss, are lacking. In Madagascar, abattoir sampling of cattle and pigs demonstrated a prevalence of infection of 20% in cattle and 5% in pigs by real-time PCR. In cattle, amplification and sequencing of the Leptospira-specific lfb1 gene revealed novel genotypes, mixed infections of two or more Leptospira species and evidence for potential transmission between small mammals and cattle. Sequencing of the secY ge

The regulation of appetite in livestock and poultry is a complex process that involves the integration of central and peripheral physiological mechanisms. The process is regulated by nutritional, environmental, and genetic factors. This review synthesises current understanding of the neuroendocrine and gut-brain axis pathways that regulate appetite, including hypothalamic signalling via agouti-related protein (AgRP)/neuropeptide Y (NPY) and proopiomelanocortin (POMC)/cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) neurons, as well as peripheral modulation by gut hormones (e.g., ghrelin, l

Vitrification has progressively supplanted conventional slow freezing as the method of choice for embryo cryopreservation in both human medicine and animal production, particularly for in vitro-produced embryos and for species or developmental stages highly sensitive to conventional freezing. By combining very high cooling and warming rates with concentrated cryoprotectant solutions and minimal sample volumes, it largely prevents intracellular ice formation and, in experienced hands, consistently yields post-warming survival and developmental rates that exceed those obtained with traditional c

Reproductive efficiency substantially determines livestock productivity, and suboptimal fertility continues to limit productivity across species. Inhibin immunization represents a novel strategy to enhance fertility by neutralizing inhibin's negative feedback on follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion. This comprehensive review synthesizes evidence from ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and buffalo) and non-ruminants (pigs, donkeys, rabbits, and avian species), evaluating inhibin immunization mechanisms and reproductive outcomes. Immunoneutralization of inhibin consistently elevate

Tinea barbae is a rare zoophilic dermatophyte infection of the beard area, commonly mimicking other dermatological or infectious conditions. We report a young man with progressive erythematous, nodular neck and wrist lesions, unresponsive to antimicrobials. Extensive investigation, including fungal PCR, identified Trichophyton species, leading to successful treatment with systemic antifungals. This case highlights the importance of considering atypical tinea barbae in patients with occupational animal exposure and persistent cutaneous lesions unresponsive to standard antibacterial treatments.
