One hundred and ninety-nine children received lorazepam 0.05 mg kg-1 or trimeprazine 3 mg kg-1 as oral premedication in a double-blind trial. Lorazepam proved more palatable and produced a cheerful demeanour, but possessed no significant advantages on overall assessment before surgery. Following operation, restlessness with vomiting, and evidence of retrograde amnesia occurred more frequently with lorazepam.

BACKGROUND: Postictal generalized electrographic suppression (PGES) may be considered an electrophysiological marker associated with an increased risk of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP).
CASE PRESENTATION: A case study is presented whereby a young man with focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures exhibited PGES after two spontaneously-aborted seizures; yet, after a third benzodiazepine-aborted seizure, PGES was absent.
CONCLUSION: This suggests that acutely administered benzodiazepines may offer direct anti-suppressive effects to prevent PGES, potentially reducing SUDEP risk.

INTRODUCTION: Status epilepticus (SE) is a neurological emergency associated with high mortality if not identified and treated promptly. For the emergent treatment of SE, the recommended intravenous (IV) lorazepam dose is 0.1 mg/kg/dose, up to a maximum of 4 mg. It has been shown that lorazepam is commonly under dosed in SE, but there is conflicting data on whether this has a negative impact on patient outcomes. The resurgence of catatonia following tapering of lorazepam is a common clinical phenomenon. However, there is limited evidence on the relationship between tapering method of lorazepam and resurgence of catatonic state. We report seven (0.6%) such patients who were found to have resurgence of catatonia. The mean age is 35.7 years; five of them had schizophrenia and other psychotic spectrum disorders. Drug-assisted interviews are useful for psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.
