PURPOSE: Pterygoid process fractures (PPFs) are classically associated with Lefort fractures but can also be encountered in association with other facial fractures such as mandibular fractures. The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency of PPFs associated with mandibular fractures and identify factors associated with PPF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study using computed tomography scanning of patients having a mandibular fracture between November 2018 and April 2020. PPFs were classified using the classification by An et al. Volume, length, and

PURPOSE: Clinically, the "bottom-up and outside-in" sequence is usually applied in the management of panfacial fractures (PFFs). However, findings to prove that a sequence initiated from the mandible is reasonable are not available. Our objective was to describe the distribution of mandibular fractures in PFFs and investigate the basis for initially addressing the mandible when treating PFFs.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The data from 107 patients with PFFs from 1998 to 2008 were analyzed retrospectively. All cases were treated with the "bottom-up and outside-in" sequence.
RESULTS: The most common

Fifty-nine children younger than 16 years with mandibular fractures were studied by age, sex, type of fracture, cause, methods of treatment, and complications. The cases were divided into three age groups. The male-to-female ratio was 2.9:1. Motor vehicle accidents were the most common cause of mandibular fractures. Associated injuries were more common in young children. The condyle was involved in 43.3% of fractures. Intermaxillary fixation was the most common treatment used. Complications appeared to be rare.

Mandibular torus fracture as a result of accidental trauma has not been reported to date in the dental literature. This study describes the case of a young adult male who suffered multiple fractures affecting the teeth and mandibular torus secondary to chin area trauma due to a bicycle accident; the first manifestation of bone damage being left unilateral paraesthesia of the lip. An occlusal x-ray study of the affected area was made to evaluate possible fracture, as unlike centred periapical x-rays and orthopantomography, it is able to reveal the existence of a fracture line of the alveolar wa

Mandibular fractures are frequently diagnosed in trauma centres. Tympanic plate and mandibular fossa fractures can be associated with those fractures and can pass unnoticed if a careful evaluation and adequate imaging exam are not performed. This descriptive study was made to evaluate the incidence of condylar fractures associated with mandibular fossa and/or tympanic plate fractures in a large trauma hospital. Twenty-nine patients were diagnosed with such fractures between July/2019 and July/2020. A total of 81.5% of the patients were diagnosed with condylar fracture associated with tympanic

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence, demographics, and outcomes of concurrent cervical spine (C-spine) fractures in pediatric facial trauma.
METHODS: The Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) from the 2016 Healthcare Cost Utilization Project (HCUP) was queried for various facial fractures using International Classification of Diseases Tenth Revision (ICD-10) diagnosis codes. Mandible fractures were further subdivided into fracture site. Patients aged 0-18 were included, and rates of C-spine fracture were analyzed with regards to demographic factors, length of stay, total charges, mortality rate,

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between impacted mandibular third molars with angle and condylar fractures is subject of many publications, yet their conclusions differ widely, hence the authors wanted to investigate this topic in their patients.
METHODS: The authors designed a retrospective study including 241 patients who presented with angle and/or mandibular condyle fractures over a 13-year period at the authors' institution. The study variable was the presence/absence of third molars. The authors used the Pell and Gregory system to classify their position, whereas the angulation was class

This study analysed the relationship between complaints and mandibular function after closed treatment of fractures of the mandibular condyle in a prospective study. In a 1-year follow-up, complaints were assessed during physical examination and function was assessed using the mandibular function impairment questionnaire (MFIQ), scoring range 0-68. Data from 114 patients (41 women, 73 men), mean age 28.1 years (SD 13.3), were available. On average the MFIQ scores were low 3.4 (SD 7.3). Ten patients (9%) experienced pain and 45 (39%) patients had a MFIQ score > 0. Mean mouth opening was 51.9 mm

OBJECTIVE: To detect the changes in 3D mandibular motion after two types of condylar fracture therapies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a 3D motion analyzer, free mandibular border movements were recorded in 21 patients successfully treated for unilateral fractures of the mandibular condylar process (nine patients: open reduction, rigid internal fixation, and functional treatment; 12 patients: closed reduction and functional treatment; follow-up: 6-66 months), and in 25 control subjects.
RESULTS: No differences were found among the groups at maximum mouth opening (MO), protrusion and in latera

BACKGROUND: The fracture of mandibular symphysis combined with bilateral condylar fractures often leads to changes in the width of the mandible, which significantly widens the face of the child. Therefore, it is necessary to reposition the mandible through accurate adduction.
METHODS: To ensure that the mandible can be accurately repositioned, a 3D printed occlusal splint was used. Bilateral maxillomandibular fixation screws were implanted. The 3D printed occlusal splint was located on the maxillary dentition and fixed to the maxillomandibular fixation screws with wire loops. The reference ba

OBJECTIVE: The treatment of comminuted mandibular fractures is challenging due to the severity of associated injuries and the need for a careful diagnosis with adequate treatment planning. Recently, open reduction and stable internal fixation (OR-IF) with a load-bearing reconstruction plate have been advocated for reliable clinical outcomes with minimal complications. This clinical prospective study evaluated OR-IF in the surgical management of comminuted mandibular fractures with a new low-profile, thin, mandibular locking reconstruction plate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively assesse

The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of recovery of mandibular motion in patients treated for fractures of the mandibular condylar process. One hundred and thirty-six patients (111 men, 25 women), 74 treated by closed and 62 by open methods, were included. They underwent testing of mandibular and condyle mobility at 6 weeks, 6 months, and 1, 2, and 3 years post surgery. Their ranges of motion were compared to those of 52 controls (26 men and 26 women). A jaw-tracking device was used to assess mandibular motion. Multilevel statistical models were used to assess differences betwee

Fractures of the mandibular angle have been well-described and, in most societies, their incidence is decreasing. In this study we analysed the stabilisation of fractures using a single plate (standard or optimised model). The finite element model was developed based on a mandibular computed tomographic scan, together with a miniplate from DePuy Synthes and an optimised plate. Using the finite element model we looked in turn at the four screws for fixation of the standard plate, and the six screws for the optimised plate, in a complete and an incomplete favourable fracture of the mandibular an

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular fractures are common in maxillofacial trauma, often requiring surgical intervention for optimal recovery. One critical concern during such procedures is the potential for nerve damage, specifically involving the mandibular canal. This study aims to investigate whether the presence of postoperative mandibular canal discontinuity is associated with an increased risk of nerve damage.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 72 postoperative mandibular fracture patients. In total, 58 patients had entire mandibular canal continuity, while 14 showe

BACKGROUND: Condylar fractures are commonly associated with symphysis/parasymphysis fractures. Condylar fractures have been attributed to direct and indirect traumatic forces, the direction and magnitude of the forces, and the condylar anatomy. The chief aim of this study was to determine the association between the newly defined mandibular chin angle and the occurrence of condylar fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to analyze two-dimensional computed tomography (2D CT) scans of patients with a history of chin trauma. The outcome was a symphysis/parasymphysi

PURPOSE: The aim of this radiomorphometric study was to analyze the association between the mandibular gonial angle and the risk of mandibular angle fracture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of medical records and radiographs of patients treated for mandibular fractures was performed. The exposure studied was the presence of a high gonial angle and the outcome was fracture of the mandibular angle. The mandibular gonial angle and mandibular height at the angle were measured using Facad software (Ilexis AB, Linköping, Sweden). Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS 16 (IBM Corp,

Bilateral mandibular angle fractures are uncommon but present a significant challenge in terms of management for maxillofacial surgeons. We present a case of an adolescent male who presented to the emergency department after a road traffic accident with isolated bilateral mandibular angle fractures, with a significant displacement on the left side. The patient was treated using rigid fixation for the more displaced left angle and non-rigid fixation for the right side, which led to a stable reduction without complications.

Over the course of a year, this study assessed the combined surgical and prosthodontic treatment of 30 patients' pathological mandibular fractures linked to third molars. Open reduction and internal fixation were used to treat patients with benign pathologies that compromised bone integrity. After the initial healing period, prosthodontic rehabilitation was performed. With few complications, the results showed a high rate of bone healing, functional restoration and patient satisfaction. Data demonstrate how well a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach can restore the structural and functiona
