A study of Pick bodies (PBs) was performed using immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and immunoelectron microscopic techniques. Ultrastructurally, the PBs in the granular neurons of the dentate fascia of Ammon's horn were composed of randomly distributed straight fibrils (14.5 +/- 2.1 nm in diameter), intermingled with a few constricted fibrils. The case of a 59-year old man who had a clinical Brunsting-Perry pemphigoid localized to the scalp is described. Direct immunoelectron microscopy demonstrated IgG and C3 immune deposits in the anchoring fibril zone, as in epidermolysis bullosa acquisita. No circulating antibodies were detected by Western immunoblotting on epidermal and dermal extracts. These findings show that Brunsting-Perry pemphigoid is not an immunological entity and that it widens the clinical spectrum of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita.

A periapical Actinomyces colony was studied by immunoelectron microscopy with a specific antiserum against Actinomyces israelii. Positive as well as some negative micro-organisms were seen within the colony. Reacting antigens were localized in the cytoplasm and the cell wall of the bacteria, which suggests that more than one antigen is involved in the reactions with the present antiserum. The ultrastructural results confirmed the applicability of the peroxidase method with Actinomyces antiserum in paraffin sections for diagnostic purposes.

A patient with epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA), who has been diagnosed as having bullous pemphigoid for 7 years, is reported. Nerve growth factor (NGF) and its receptor (NGFR) are proteins that have a role in the normal development and survival of neurons in the peripheral and central nervous systems. Controversy regarding the origin of characteristic stromal cells (SC) is responsible for the placement of hemangioblastoma as a single entity in the category of "tumors of uncertain histogenesis" in the current WHO classification of brain tumors. This subclassification of hemangioblastoma is, to a large extent, a consequence of a remarkable antigenic heterogeneity of SC demonstrated in many, often contradictory immunohistochemical studies. In contrast, most of the electron microscopic studies demonstrated a number of features indicating angiogenic nature of SC and, therefore, hemangioblastoma.

We describe a woman from Korea with pyodermatitis-pyostomatitis vegetans associated with ulcerative colitis. On immunofluorescence examination, she demonstrated in vivo bound and circulating IgG antibasement membrane zone antibodies. The immunoelectron microscopy and immunoblot analysis showed that the antibodies reacted with the bullous pemphigoid antigen 230. We consider that the circulating autoantibodies to the bullous pemphigoid antigen 230 in this patient were an epiphenomenon, resulting from epidermal damage induced by inflammation of pyodermatitis-pyostomatitis vegetans.

We report a case of α-amylase crystalloid granuloma of the parotid gland in a 65-year-old Japanese woman. Histopathologically, the lesion comprised cystlike dilatation of the ducts and foreign body granulomas, with deposits of numerous crystalloid structures. The crystalloids were eosinophilic and varied in size and shape. Immunohistochemically, the crystalloids were positive for α-amylase. Immunoelectron microscopy showed the crystalloids to be cuboidal or rectangular in shape with irregularly shaped central spaces.
