Sociodemographic determinants of willingness to adopt surveillance technology and mosquito control training for dengue in Malaysia.

Dengue fever remains a major public health concern in Malaysia, where rapid urbanization and ineffective vector control measures contribute to persistent outbreaks. While drone-based mosquito surveillance and mobile applications offer innovative solutions, public acceptance and adoption remain uncertain. Additionally, community-based mosquito control training is crucial, yet participation is often influenced by sociodemographic factors. This study examines determinants influencing willingness to adopt a dengue surveillance mobile application and engage in mosquito control training programs. A

Repurposing 4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase inhibitors as novel agents for mosquito control: A structure-based design approach.

Mosquito-borne diseases remain a significant global health burden, necessitating innovative vector control strategies. 4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitors, widely used as herbicides, have been recently explored for their potential to disrupt mosquito tyrosine metabolic pathways, offering a novel approach to mosquito control. This study utilized a structure-based rational design strategy to repurpose existing HPPD inhibitors, such as pyrazole-benzene 2,2-dioxothiadiazole and pyrazole-1,3-isoindolinone hybrids, targeting Aedes aegypti HPPD (AaHPPD). Biochemical assays demonstra

Environmental persistence and transmission dynamics of Serratia AS1 in mosquito habitats: advancing paratransgenesis for malaria control.

UNLABELLED: Malaria remains a major global health challenge, particularly in developing countries, necessitating innovative control strategies. With rising resistance of Plasmodium to drugs and Anopheles mosquitoes to insecticides, paratransgenesis-using engineered symbiotic bacteria to deliver anti-pathogen molecules-offers a promising alternative. Translating this approach to field applications requires rigorous evaluation under semi-field conditions. We evaluated the environmental stability and transmission dynamics of Serratia AS1-mCherry, a paratransgenesis candidate, in Anopheles stephen

Transforming malaria prevention and control: the prospects and challenges of gene drive technology for mosquito management.

Background: In the era of insecticides and anti-malarial drug resistance, gene drive technology holds considerable promise for malaria control. Gene drive technology deploys genetic modifications into mosquito populations to impede their ability to transmit the malaria parasite. This can be either through the disruption of an essential mosquito gene or the association of gene drive with a desirable effector gene. CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) is a gene editing tool that precisely modifies mosquito vector DNA sequences and curtails the rate of pathogen trans

Delivery and effectiveness of entomopathogenic fungi for mosquito and tick control: Current knowledge and research challenges.

Insects, ticks, and mites represent a threat to animal health globally, mainly due to their role as vectors of pathogens. Among the most important diseases, those transmitted by mosquitoes (e.g., malaria and arboviral infections) and ticks (e.g., Lyme borreliosis, babesiosis, and viral haemorrhagic fever) have a huge impact on human health. The principal methods available for reducing the public health burden of most vector-borne diseases are vector-based intervention relying to insecticides and acaricides. However, the use of these products is challenged by the introduction of invasive specie

Biological Control of Mosquito-Borne Diseases: The Potential of Wolbachia-Based Interventions in an IVM Framework.

People living in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world face an enormous health burden due to mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and filariasis. Historically and today, targeting mosquito vectors with, primarily, insecticide-based control strategies have been a key control strategy against major mosquito-borne diseases. However, the success to date of such approaches is under threat from multiple insecticide resistance mechanisms while vector control (VC) options are still limited. The situation therefore requires the development of innovative control measures ag

Mosquito control with green nanopesticides: towards the One Health approach? A review of non-target effects.

The rapid spread of highly aggressive arboviruses, parasites, and bacteria along with the development of resistance in the pathogens and parasites, as well as in their arthropod vectors, represents a huge challenge in modern parasitology and tropical medicine. Eco-friendly vector control programs are crucial to fight, besides malaria, the spread of dengue, West Nile, chikungunya, and Zika virus, as well as other arboviruses such as St. Louis encephalitis and Japanese encephalitis. However, research efforts on the control of mosquito vectors are experiencing a serious lack of eco-friendly and h

Novel synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Bauhinia variegata: a recent eco-friendly approach for mosquito control.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Mosquito vectors are responsible for transmitting diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, dengue, and lymphatic filariasis. The use of synthetic insecticides to control mosquito vectors has caused physiological resistance and adverse environmental effects, in addition to high operational cost. Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles has been proposed as an alternative to traditional control tools. In the present study, green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using aqueous leaf extract of Bauhinia variegata by reduction of Ag(+) ions from silver nitrate soluti

Effects of mosquito-proofing storm drains on adult and larvae mosquito abundance: Protocol of the IDAlErt storm drAin randomiSed controlled trial (IDEAS).

Aedes and Culex mosquitoes, known for spreading arboviruses like dengue and West Nile, thrive in cities, posing health risks to urban populations. Climate change can create suitable climatic conditions for these vectors to spread further in Europe. Cities contain numerous landscape and infrastructure elements, such as storm drains, that allow stagnant water build-up facilitating mosquito breeding. Modifying urban infrastructure to prevent water accumulation can reduce mosquito populations, but evidence is limited. The Public Health Agency of Barcelona, Spain, introduced a structural modificati

Ecological and engineered modulation of the mosquito microbiome: mechanisms, vector competence, and translational prospects for disease control.

Malaria, dengue fever, Zika, chikungunya, yellow fever, and West Nile fever are mosquito-borne diseases that collectively impose an enormous global health burden, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries where vector-control tools remain limited or compromised by insecticide resistance. Over the past two decades, the characterization of mosquito-associated microbiomes has transformed our understanding of vector biology, revealing complex, ecologically contingent assemblages of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protists that profoundly influence mosquito physiology, immunity, a

Efficacy of 3D screens for sustainable mosquito control: a semi-field experimental hut evaluation in northeastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: A three-dimensional window screen (3D-Screen) has been developed to create a window double-screen trap (3D-WDST), effectively capturing and preventing the escape of mosquitoes. A 2015 laboratory study demonstrated the 3D-Screen's efficacy, capturing 92% of mosquitoes in a double-screen setup during wind tunnel assays. To further evaluate its effectiveness, phase II experimental hut trials were conducted in Muheza, Tanzania. METHODS: Three experimental hut trials were carried out between 2016 and 2017. Trial I tested two versions of the 3D-WDST in huts with open or closed eaves, wi

Challenge and opportunity for vector control strategies on key mosquito-borne diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mosquito-borne diseases are major global health problems that threaten nearly half of the world's population. Conflicting resources and infrastructure required by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic have resulted in the vector control process being more demanding than ever. Although novel vector control paradigms may have been more applicable and efficacious in these challenging settings, there were virtually no reports of novel strategies being developed or implemented during COVID-19 pandemic. Evidence shows that the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted the impleme

Mesocosm experiments reveal the impact of mosquito control measures on malaria vector life history and population dynamics.

The impact of control measures on mosquito vector fitness and demography is usually estimated from bioassays or indirect variables in the field. Whilst indicative, neither approach is sufficient to quantify the potentially complex response of mosquito populations to combined interventions. Here, large replicated mesocosms were used to measure the population-level response of the malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis to long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) when used in isolation, or combined with insecticidal eave louvers (EL), or treatment of cattle with the endectocide Ivermectin (IM). Attacking the mosquito on multiple fronts: Insights from the Vector Control Optimization Model (VCOM) for malaria elimination.

BACKGROUND: Despite great achievements by insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) in reducing malaria transmission, it is unlikely these tools will be sufficient to eliminate malaria transmission on their own in many settings today. Fortunately, field experiments indicate that there are many promising vector control interventions that can be used to complement ITNs and/or IRS by targeting a wide range of biological and environmental mosquito resources. The majority of these experiments were performed to test a single vector control intervention in isolation; however,

An analysis of community perceptions of mosquito-borne disease control and prevention in Sint Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: In the Caribbean, mosquito-borne diseases are a public health threat. In Sint Eustatius, dengue, Chikungunya and Zika are now endemic. To control and prevent mosquito-borne diseases, the Sint Eustatius Public Health Department relies on the community to assist with the control of Aedes aegypti mosquito. Unfortunately, community based interventions are not always simple, as community perceptions and responses shape actions and influence behavioural responses Objective: The aim of this study was to determine how the Sint Eustatius population perceives the Aedes aegypti mosquito, mosq
