Thymic carcinoids are a rare entity that may be associated with endocrine diseases like Cushing's syndrome or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type I (MEN1). These tumors represent 4% of anterior mediastinal tumors and are characterized by their very aggressive behavior. We present the case of a patient with a previous MEN 1 diagnosis in whom, during the follow up of his disease, a thoracic image compatible with thymic carcinoid was detected. After an extended thymectomy that included peri-thymic fat resection, the clinical diagnosis was confirmed. A follow up examination 14 months later

BACKGROUND: Surgery in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1)-associated primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is difficult as the condition it is caused by asymmetrical multiple gland hyperplasia. It is uncertain which operative procedure provides the best outcome with regard to long-term normocalcaemia.
METHODS: All patients who had surgery for genetically confirmed MEN1-associated pHPT between 1987 and 2009 were identified from a prospective database. Clinical data, operative procedures and outcome were analysed retrospectively.
RESULTS: A total of 47 patients were identifi

Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) types 1 and 2 syndromes are rare hereditary cancer syndromes expressing a variety of endocrine and non-endocrine neoplasias and lesions. The improving of both molecular and clinical genetics knowledge helps health care providers in the whole spectrum of the clinical managements of MEN patients. The MEN1 gene, a tumour suppressor gene, is responsible of MEN1 syndrome, and is probably involved in the regulation of several cell functions, including DNA replication and repair and transcriptional machinery. RET proto-oncogene encodes for a receptor tyrosine kinase

Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) occurs in about 90% of patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1). In contrast to sporadic pHPT, multiple gland disease is most common in MEN1. The appropriate surgical approach is still controversial. The aim of this study was to analyze the results of surgical therapy of pHPT in patients with genetically confirmed MEN1. In an observational study, preoperative data, operative procedures, long-term results, and a possible genotype-phenotype correlation were analyzed in patients with pHPT and genetically confirmed MEN1. According to our results,

A rare case of leiomyoma of the ureter in a patient with type 1 multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) is reported. The case is of a Japanese man in his forties who had a past history of parathyroid gland hyperplasia, pancreatic islet cell tumors, and bilateral adrenocortical nodular hyperplasia. The leiomyoma, measuring 15 x 13 x 12 mm, was located in the right upper ureter, obstructing the lumen and causing hydronephrosis. Three small leiomyomas were also detected in the lower portion. Furthermore, histological examination revealed three tiny leiomyomatous nodules embedded in the muscular layer.

A 59-year-old woman with chronic renal failure due to type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is presented. Her father and a brother had a history of brain tumor. Her blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels were 102 mg/dl and 4.5 mg/dl, respectively. Her serum Ca(2+) and Pi were within the normal range (9.4 mg/dl and 5.4 mg/dl, respectively). Her intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) level was 1 730 000 pg/ml. A (99m)Tc-methoxy-isobutylisonitrile scintigraphy showed high uptake in three parathyroid glands. A magnetic resonance image showed microadenoma in the pituitary gland. The serum gastrin level

A 16-year-old boy had a swollen neck that was a result of multiple endocrine neoplasia Type 2B (MEN 2B). CT revealed bilateral thyroid tumors, swelling of right cervical lymph nodes, and slight enlargement of the right adrenal gland. I-131 metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy demonstrated increased uptake in the right adrenal gland and the left thyroid tumor, but no abnormal uptake in the right thyroid tumor and the right cervical lymph nodes. Postoperative pathologic findings were consistent with the diagnosis of right adrenal medullary hyperplasia, which is a precursor of pheochromocy

In a few patients with Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) and no clinical symptoms of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN-2A) or medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), missense mutations in the cysteine residues 609 and 620 of the Ret gene have been identified. In several pedigrees with either MEN-2A or familial MTC (FMTC) a documented germline mutation in cysteine 618 or 620 follows the segregation of the disease phenotype. The appearance of the HSCR phenotype in such patients and pedigrees cannot be easily reconciled with the gain of function which is associated with the dominant oncogenic effect

A patient with preexisting multiple endocrine neoplasia type IIA had normal 24-hour urinary metanephrine and vanillylmandelic acid excretions before and during pregnancy. After a benign prenatal course, the patient had a term spontaneous vaginal delivery. Multiple endocrine neoplasia type IIA antedating pregnancy may be associated with a normal obstetric outcome in the absence of a phenochromocytoma.

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry1995eng
Successful treatment of the multiple endocrine neoplasia type III (MEN III) syndrome requires early diagnosis. It is highly possible that the patient's dentist may be the first practitioner with the opportunity to diagnose this potentially fatal syndrome. Additionally, patients with this syndrome having a pheochromocytoma and needing invasive dental treatment pose a life-threatening dental management risk. This article presents a review of the MEN II syndrome and a case report on the surgical management of a MEN III patient with a pheochromocytoma.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1), an autosomal dominant disease characterized by neoplasia of the parathyroid glands, anterior pituitary and endocrine pancreas, is rarely reported in Asian populations. The MEN1 gene, mapped to chromosome 11q13 but yet to be cloned, has been found to be homogeneous in Caucasian populations through linkage analysis. Here, two previously unreported Asian kindreds with MEN1 are described; linkage analysis using microsatellite polymorphic markers in the MEN1 region was carried out. The first kindred, of Mongolian-Chinese origin, is a multigeneration famil

Pheochromocytoma is a rare adrenal medullary tumor of chromaffin cell origin that presents a syndrome of alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptor stimulation due to secretion of epinephrine and norepinephrine. This tumor occurs sporadically in the population and is also associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type II (MEN II). Although malignant pheochromocytoma is associated with sporadic tumors, those associated with familial MEN syndromes are rarely malignant. We report a case of a rare metastatic pheochromocytoma in a patient with MEN IIA. Surgical debulking, which has been shown

BACKGROUND: Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 1 is a rare genetic syndrome mainly caused by mutations of MEN1 gene and characterized by a combination of several endocrine and non-endocrine manifestations. The objective of this study was to describe cutaneous lesions and other non-endocrine manifestations of MEN1 in a cohort of patients with familial (F) and sporadic (S) MEN1, compare the prevalence of these manifestations between the two cohorts, and investigate the correlation with MEN1 mutation status.
METHODS: We collected phenotypic and genotypic data of 185 patients with F-MEN1 and S-MEN

Endocrine tumors of the parathyroid and pancreas are encountered either as sporadic type or as part of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1). A high frequency of the loss of heterozygosity (LOH) has been observed in tumors of the sporadic type in the locus of the MEN 1 gene, which has recently been cloned and designated the menin gene. It would be of great interest to determine whether somatic mutations in the menin gene are responsible for the sporadic endocrine tumors. For this purpose, we have investigated the menin gene mutations in 21 sporadic parathyroid adenomas, 2 parathyroid car

We report the case of a 35-year-old woman with clinically and genetically confirmed multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) who presented with abnormal uterine bleeding, hypermenorrhea, menstrual irregularities, and visual field defects. Hormonal evaluation revealed elevated estradiol levels, non-suppressed follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), suppressed luteinizing hormone (LH), and mild hyperprolactinemia. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a large pituitary macroadenoma. The patient underwent transsphenoidal surgery, and histopathological and immunohistochemical (IHQ) analyses confir

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN2A) is a rare condition that combines three different tumors: pheochromocytoma, medullary thyroid cancer and hyperparathyroidism. Genetic testing is usually the standard method of diagnosis; however, financial limitations in this case led us to forego the genetic test and rely on clinical findings.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 28-year-old female presented to the surgery department with episodes of hypertension, blurred vision, redness of hands, and excessive sweating. Computed tomography confirmed multiple adrenal tumors. Combin

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 is a rare genetic neuroendocrine syndrome caused by over 1500 different germline mutations. It can cause 20 different endocrine tumors affecting primarily the parathyroid glands, gastroenteropancreatic tract, and the anterior pituitary gland. Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN2A) and Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B (MEN2B) are autosomal dominant genetic syndromes because of a germline variant in the 'rearranged during transfection' (RET) proto-oncogene. There are common RET mutations causing receptor hyperactivation and induction of downstream si

Primary hyperparathyroidism is a common endocrinopathy. Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 (MEN1) is a rare autosomal dominantly inherited endocrine tumor predisposition syndrome, with one of main manifestations being primary hyperparathyroidism. We retrospectively evaluated a set of 1011 patients who underwent surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism between the years 2018-2022, and found 78 (8 %) patients who underwent reoperations and 27 patients with MEN1 syndrome. In the group of patients with MEN1 syndrome, 7 (35 %) needed reoperations. Patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome
