Effect of vibration on antagonist muscle coactivation during progressive fatigue in humans.

1. Biceps femoris antagonist coactivation increases during progressive fatigue. Our purpose was to determine if the mechanism that increases coactivation during fatigue is susceptible to vibration. Vibration drives alpha-motoneurons via the Ia loop, producing force without descending motor drive, and thus uncoupling antagonist and agonist activation. Evidence that vibration increases coactivation disproportionately from its 'common drive' would suggest the possibility that some of the effects of fatigue are mediated through a segmental reflex loop. 2. Ten male subjects performed repeated maxim

Physiologic parameters and perceived exertion with local muscle fatigue in postpolio subjects.

Fifty postpolio patients, 34 with and 16 without complaints of progressive loss of muscle strength, and 41 control subjects were studied to compare physiologic measures of the fatiguing process and to determine whether there is a significant interaction between the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and physiologic measures. Statistical analyses were by ANOVA and repeated-measures ANOVA. The RPE was obtained every 20 seconds during an isometric contraction of the quadriceps at 40% of maximal torque; median frequency (Fm) of the power spectrum of the surface electromyographic signal and neuromu

A new syndrome: thrombocytopathia, muscle fatigue, asplenia, miosis, migraine, dyslexia and ichthyosis.

A new multifacetted syndrome inherited as an autosomal, dominant trait is described encompassing not only two hitherto undescribed hereditary defects--thrombocytopathia and asplenia--but also muscle contractile defect, migraine-like headache, miosis, dyslexia and ichthyosis. None of these defects has so far been assigned to a specific chromosome or linkage group. Further studies on the various aspects of the syndrome are in progress.

Hamstring-to-quadriceps fatigue ratio offers new and different muscle function information than the conventional non-fatigued ratio.

Commonly used injury risk prediction tests such as the hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) strength ratio appear to be poor predictors of non-contact injury. However, these tests are typically performed in a non-fatigued state, despite accumulated fatigue being an important risk factor for both hamstring strain (HS) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in professional soccer players. After the effect of different H:Q calculation methods were compared and contrasted, the influence of neuromuscular fatigue on the H:Q strength ratio and the association between fatigued and non-fatigued ratio s

Acute Effects of Neck Muscle Fatigue on Masticatory Muscles in Probable Bruxists: A Sonoelastography and Perfusion Imaging Approach.

OBJECTIVE: The interplay between cervical and masticatory muscles remains unclear, despite evidence suggesting co-contraction. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the acute effects of induced neck muscle fatigue on the mechanical and hemodynamic properties of masticatory muscles using sonoelastography and microvascular imaging. METHODS: Thirty-two individuals with probable bruxism were included based on positive responses to a standardized questionnaire and the presence of clinical signs (e.g., tooth wear, linea alba). Sonoelastography assessed the elasticity index (EI) of the mass

The impact of inertial exercises performed in the workplace on shoulder muscles' strength and muscles' fatigue resistance in women with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Workers who do monotonous and repetitive work in a static position often complain about fatigue and decreased work efficiency. Some studies indicate that to improve muscle fatigue, resistance strength training can be used. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To investigate the effect of 4-week inertial training on shoulder muscles' strength and muscles' fatigue resistance 44 female workers with disabilities were examined. The participants were randomized into the training group (T) (N = 32) and the control group (C) (N = 12). Before the training and after that shoulder muscles' strength were te

Effects of back muscle fatigue and modified trunk inertia on lumbar kinematics, kinetics and muscle activity during walking.

Back endurance is a strong predictor of back pain, but the mechanisms underlying this relationship are not clear. Fatigue reduces muscles' force-generating capacity, so greater fatigability may increase lumbar motion and loading and trunk muscle co-contraction. Using a novel pack to modify inertia, we tested the effect of back fatigue and increased trunk inertia on lumbar kinematics, kinetics and muscle activity during walking. Lumbar kinematic and kinetic amplitudes and maximum muscle activity were measured per stride across four conditions: pre- and post-fatigue, with and without increased t

Verification of fingertip blood lactate measurement as an index of muscle fatigue recovery.

[Purpose] To evaluate the validity of measurement sites for assessing blood lactic acid levels following unilateral upper-limb exercises. [Participants and Methods] Blood lactic acid levels were measured at the fingertips of both hands in 40 healthy young men (mean age 20.9 ± 2.5 years). Measurements were taken before, immediately after, and at 90-s intervals following unilateral upper-limb exercises involving palmar flexion and dorsiflexion of the non-dominant hand. Exercise load was determined through maximum voluntary contraction testing. [Results] No significant differences were found in t

Brain and muscle activity during fatiguing maximum-speed knee movement.

Although the underlying mechanisms behind upper limb (e.g., finger) motor slowing during movements performed at the maximum voluntary rate have been explored, the same cannot be said for the lower limb. This is especially relevant considering the lower limb's larger joints and different functional patterns. Despite the similar motor control base, previously found differences in movement patterns and segment inertia may lead to distinct central and peripheral manifestations of fatigue in larger joint movement. Therefore, we aimed to explore these manifestations in a fatiguing knee maximum movem

Natural Compounds That Enhance Motor Function in a Mouse Model of Muscle Fatigue.

Musculoskeletal disease can be a serious condition associated with aging that may lead to fractures and a bedridden state due to decreased motor function. In addition to exercise training to increase muscle mass, increasing muscle function with the intake of functional foods is an effective treatment strategy for musculoskeletal disease. Muscle-specific SOD2-deficient mice (muscle-Sod2-/-) show a severe disturbance in exercise in association with increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, as well as mitochondrial dysfunction and muscle damage. In the present study, to develop a therapeut

Hip muscle response to a fatiguing run in females with iliotibial band syndrome.

Impaired hip muscle function has often been cited as a contributing factor to the development of iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), yet our full understanding of this relationship is not well established. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of fatigue on hip abductor muscle function in females with ITBS. Female runners, 20 healthy and 12 with a current diagnosis of ITBS, performed a treadmill run to fatigue. Prior-to and following the run to fatigue, gluteus medius strength and median frequency values (an indicator of fatigue resistance) were measured. Additionally, onset activ

Chemotherapy-induced weakness and fatigue in skeletal muscle: the role of oxidative stress.

SignificanceFatigue is one of the most common symptoms of cancer and its treatment, manifested in the clinic through weakness and exercise intolerance. These side effects not only compromise patient's quality of life (QOL), but also diminish physical activity, resulting in limited treatment and increased morbidity.Recent advancesOxidative stress, mediated by cancer or chemotherapeutic agents, is an underlying mechanism of the drug-induced toxicity. Nontargeted tissues, such as striated muscle, are severely affected by oxidative stress during chemotherapy, leading to toxicity and dysfunction.Cr

Fatigue is associated with muscle weakness in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: an explorative study.

OBJECTIVES: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of inherited connective tissue disorders characterised by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility and tissue fragility. It has recently been shown that muscle weakness occurs frequently in EDS, and that fatigue is a common and clinically important symptom. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between fatigue severity and subjective and objective measures of muscle weakness. Furthermore, the predictive value of muscle weakness for fatigue severity was determined, together with

Effects of lower extremity muscle fatigue on the outcomes of slip-induced falls.

Slip-induced fall accidents continue to be a significant cause of fatal injuries and economic losses. Identifying the risk factors causing slip-induced falls is key to developing better preventive measures to reduce fall accidents. Although epidemiological studies suggest localised muscle fatigue may be one of the risk factors for slip-induced falls, there has been no documented biomechanical study examining the relationship between fatigue and fall accidents. As such, the overall objective of the current study was to investigate the effects of localised muscle fatigue of the quadriceps on the

Isotonic dynamometry for the assessment of power and fatigue in the knee extensor muscles of females.

Impairments in muscle power production and recovery following short-duration intense activity could lead to decreased performance and risk of injury. We developed a power test for the knee extensor muscles using torque-velocity testing and moderate isotonic loads. Twenty-eight female volunteers performed three maximal efforts at each of four isotonic loads (27.1, 40.6, 54.2 and 67.8 N. m). If the calculated regression line for the torque-velocity data had an r2 >/= 0.95 (i.e. an acceptable test), maximal power (408 +/- 56 W) was computed from the data. Immediately after torque-velocity testing

Neuromuscular propagation after fatiguing contractions of the paralyzed soleus muscle in humans.

We analyzed the M wave and torque after repetitive activation and recovery of the human soleus muscle in individuals with spinal cord injury. Fifteen individuals with complete paralysis had the tibial nerve activated for 330 ms every second with a 20-Hz train. The M wave and torque were analyzed before fatigue, immediately after fatigue, and during recovery. The torque and three M-wave measurements (amplitude, duration, median frequency) changed significantly after fatigue in the chronic group, but the M-wave area was not changed. The M wave was completely recovered after 5 min of rest, even t
