Museum genomics links MC1R alleles to adaptive winter coat color polymorphism in the long-tailed weasel.

Understanding the architecture of biological adaptations is a major endeavor of evolutionary biology. Using Natural History collections, we study the genetic basis and evolution of white/brown winter coat color variation in the long-tailed weasel (Neogale frenata), a crucial phenological adaptation for camouflage in habitats with seasonal snow. We produced whole-genome sequencing data for museum specimens, along two winter color morph transition areas in North America, at the West and East coasts. Genome-wide association scans identified a single genomic region linked to color variation polymo

Bringing the museum into the hospital to promote cultural wellness in patients undergoing haemodialysis through a virtual reality tour.

Previous studies placed copies of artworks in hospital environments to reduce stress and anxiety of patients. This study aims to investigate the psychological effect of a virtual tour of a museum provided by a virtual reality (VR) system in chronic patients suffering from Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) during the administration of haemodialysis. Twenty-six patients were enrolled at the Hospital where usually underwent for receiving their conventional therapy (CT) for CRF. Their positive and negative affect was measured by PANAS at baseline (before), after CT, and after CT in which a virtual museu

Rediscovery of a name-bearing type of Echinococcus multilocularis (Leuckart, 1863) by museum forensics: a cold case revisited.

We report on the rediscovery of a presumably lost type specimen of Echinococcus multilocularis (Leuckart, 1863). The study establishes the mitochondrial genome of E. multilocularis from a historical syntype specimen and explores modern genomic techniques to clarify its identity in European populations. Despite initial failure in nested PCR, high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) successfully assembled the mitochondrial genome from post-capture reads, revealing a 13,738 bp sequence. This genome contained 12 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis p

Particle-Bound Mercury Characterization in the Central Italian Herbarium of the Natural History Museum of the University of Florence (Italy).

Museums air quality can be negatively affected by treatments with heavy metals compounds employed to prevent pest infestations. Among these, the past use of mercury dichloride (HgCl2) on herbaria artifacts currently produces high levels of indoor atmospheric gaseous mercury (Hg0) and possibly of particulate bound Hg (PBM), i.e., the particulate matter containing Hg. This study evaluates the PBM pollution in the Central Italian Herbarium (Natural History Museum of the University of Florence, Italy), characterizing the size range and chemical speciation with SEM-EDS microanalysis. The analysis o

Variola virus genome sequenced from an eighteenth-century museum specimen supports the recent origin of smallpox.

Smallpox, caused by the variola virus (VARV), was a highly virulent disease with high mortality rates causing a major threat for global human health until its successful eradication in 1980. Despite previously published historic and modern VARV genomes, its past dissemination and diversity remain debated. To understand the evolutionary history of VARV with respect to historic and modern VARV genetic variation in Europe, we sequenced a VARV genome from a well-described eighteenth-century case from England (specimen P328). In our phylogenetic analysis, the new genome falls between the modern str

Breaking the Rules: Museum Data Reveal Divergent Support for Classic Ecogeographical Rules in North American Flying Squirrels.

Ecogeographic generalizations or "rules", such as Bergmann's rule and Allen's rule, propose that endotherms in colder climates evolve larger bodies and shorter appendages to minimize heat loss. These patterns are hypothesized to reflect physiological adaptations to thermal stress through reduced surface area-to-volume ratios. Although these rules have been extensively evaluated across birds and mammals, their applicability to arboreal gliders remains untested, with little consideration of how alternative ecological and evolutionary drivers may structure morphological variation in flying squirr

BeeGees: A High-Throughput Protein-Coding DNA Barcode Recovery Pipeline Tailored for Genome Skims of Museum Specimens.

Natural history collections are unparalleled archives of global biodiversity, yet most specimens remain molecularly uncharacterised due to the technical challenges of historical DNA (hDNA), including degradation, low endogenous content and contamination. Genome skimming offers a scalable alternative to PCR-based barcoding, but existing bioinformatic workflows are not optimised for the heterogeneous, metagenomic nature of museum-derived data. Here we present BeeGees (Barcode Extraction and Evaluation from Genome Skims), a high-performance computing (HPC) integrated, Snakemake-based workflow des

"Unraveling the Gut Microbiome of the Genus Herichthys (Pisces: Cichlidae): What Can We Learn from Museum Specimens?".

The use of museum preserved specimens to know microbiome in extinct and threatened species has been explored recently. The fishes of the genus Herichthys are distributed mainly in the Pánuco-Tamesí system in Northeastern Mexico, one of the most polluted basins in the country leading to near half of the species be considering as threatened. In this paper we used the hypervariable V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene from the 11 species of the genus Herichthys obtained from museum collections to evaluate the potential use of fixed preserved vouchers in the knowledge of gut microbiota diversity and the

[Nosebleed in the history of rhinology. Images of the history of otorhinolaryngology presented by instruments from the collection of the Ingolstadt Medical History Museum].

ETIOLOGY AND ANATOMY: Up to the Middle Ages, nosebleeds were considered a natural means of purification in internal diseases. In addition injuries, extreme physical exertion, and influences from the sexual sphere were recognized causes. In the 19th century, low atmospheric pressure on mountains and in balloons was also assumed to be an etiological factor. It was only at the end of the 19th century that the importance of high blood pressure and defective coagulation were diagnosed in context with nosebleeds. In ancient times, it was known that compressing the nasal alae can often stop the bleed

A methodology for the identification and classification of weighted silk in museum collections using portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (PXRF).

In the 19th century in Europe and North America, silk was often treated with inorganic salts to increase its weight. Although such silk fabrics, often referred to as "weighted" or "loaded", are considered to degrade rapidly, their presence in heritage collections often remains unclear. So far, the fragility and multilayered structure of garments have prevented swift identification and classification of weighted silks, as often objects cannot be placed in the vertical position for analysis, nor can superimposed layers of fabric be measured selectively. In this article, a non-invasive approach f

A chemical analysis of 20th century traditional medicines curated at the Ditsong museum of culture History, Pretoria, South Africa.

This paper presents the results of chemical tests conducted on the contents of seven 20th Century medicine containers, mostly from southern Africa, curated at the Ditsong Museum of Culture History. Our results reveal 56 discreet chemical compounds, most of which are plant secondary metabolites but including several toxins and a synthetic compound. A range of different ingredients, some of which could be from plant or animal origin, are implicated in each of the containers. Although most of the identified compounds have known medicinal and/or nutritional properties, some, like conhydrine, are t

Use of mammalian museum specimens to test hypotheses about the geographic expansion of Lyme disease in the southeastern United States.

Lyme disease, caused primarily in North America by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, is the most frequently reported vector-borne disease in North America and its geographic extent is increasing in all directions from foci in the northeastern and north central United States. Several southeastern states, including Virginia and North Carolina, have experienced large increases in Lyme disease incidence in the past two decades, with the biggest changes in incidence occurring in the western portion of each state. We tested the hypothesis that B. burgdorferi s.s. was present in weste

Dental pathology of the wild Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus): The study of a 20th century Portuguese museum collection.

For some wild canids, such as the Iberian wolf, there is a lack of in-depth knowledge about dental pathology. We aimed to evaluate it, in a standardized manner, in specimens from a Portuguese museum collection. Sixty-five deceased specimens of wild Iberian wolves, 61 complete skulls and 4 mandibles, collected in Portugal between 1977 and 1995, were analyzed. Sample comprised 18 females, 24 males and 23 individuals of undetermined sex. Teeth were evaluated by visual observation and dental radiography for tooth wear, periodontitis, fractures and other dental lesions. We have found several causes

More than skin and bones: Comparing extraction methods and alternative sources of DNA from avian museum specimens.

Next-generation sequencing has greatly expanded the utility and value of museum collections by revealing specimens as genomic resources. As the field of museum genomics grows, so does the need for extraction methods that maximize DNA yields. For avian museum specimens, the established method of extracting DNA from toe pads works well for most specimens. However, for some specimens, especially those of birds that are very small or very large, toe pads can be a poor source of DNA. In this study, we apply two DNA extraction methods (phenol-chloroform and silica column) to three different sources

[The history of the Pathologic Museum of the Berlin Charité Hospital. 4. The remarkable events concerning a twin monster from Eupen].

A legal dispute broke out in Eupen near Aachen, 1873, and was to be protracted through 14 years. The case was about a twin monster that had died at or after birth. A physician in Eupen, at the same time public servant in the local government, was aware of Virchow's interest in collecting cases. He obtained the two interconnected dead bodies from the parents and promised the latter a sizeable amount of money, obviously assuming that Virchow had at his disposal funds for compensation, as had been the case with Rudolphi and Müller, some time before. The twin monster was sent to Berlin, but no mon

Crises involving cultural institutions increasingly unfold across multiple platforms, where the same controversy is interpreted through different content formats, interaction structures, and community norms. This study develops distributed accountability as a function-based framework for examining how public demands for sanction, explanation, and relational repair are organized across platform environments. The study analyzes 64,349 publicly visible top-level comments from Douyin, Bilibili, and Rednote, organized into three event-anchored source-content groups concerning the Nanjing Museum don
