OBJECTIVES: Hyaluronic acid fat graft myringoplasty (HAFGM) is a new technique for tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) treatment. It is simple, inexpensive, and performed under local anesthesia at the outpatient office department. We aim to evaluate the HAFGM on different TMP sizes, to compare the success rate of HAFGM with the underlay and overlay techniques, and to assess the hearing improvement at one year postoperatively.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
METHODS: Patients were divided into three groups depending on the patient's choice of technique: HAFGM (group I), underlay technique (g

OBJECTIVES: The study compares the medium-term outcomes of myringoplasty procedures using fascia and cartilage grafts.
METHODS: Patients with chronic otitis media with perforations larger than 50% of the size of the tympanic membrane were included in a randomized, controlled, prospective clinical trial. The perforations were repaired with either temporalis fascia (20 ears) or cartilage (18 ears) grafts selected randomly. A search of the literature was performed to look for other randomized studies comparing fascia and cartilage.
RESULTS: The graft take rates of fascia and cartilage grafts at

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have reported a high success rate of pediatric myringoplasty, but their definition of success and length of follow-up vary widely. Authors debate whether the success of a pediatric myringoplasty should be defined purely by an intact tympanic membrane or should analysis of middle ear health and audiometric data also be included. For the purposes of this study, success was defined as an intact tympanic membrane at 12 months postsurgery without evidence of effusion and preservation of hearing.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the true success rate of myringoplasty and identi

OBJECTIVES: Tympanic membrane (TM) perforation closure can present a problem in children, especially in anterior and total perforations, because of the anterior's lack of support for the graft. It was suggested that the anterior tab flap (ATF) myringoplasty, an underlay graft with an anterior tab under the TM annulus, could provide better stability of the graft. We undertook a prospective, randomized, controlled study to compare the ATF myringoplasty with the standard underlay (SU) myringoplasty in children.
METHODS: We randomly assigned 59 children to undergo ATF myringoplasty and 52 to unde

Anterior and subtotal tympanic perforations are difficult perforations to repair. We used the anterosuperior anchoring technique to repair 105 of those perforations. Our technique utilizes a large temporalis fascia graft using an underlay technique with due emphasis on anterosuperior anchorage. The success rates in paediatric myringoplasty for consultant solo (J.R.K.) and trainees under supervision were 100% and 85.7%, respectively. The overall success rates in adult myringoplasty for consultant solo and trainees under supervision were 93.8% and 82.4%, respectively. Analysis of the 82 successf

INTRODUCTION: Type 1 tympanoplasty (myringoplasty) is the surgical closure of a perforated eardrum. Its purpose is to restore the integrity of the tympanic membrane and to improve hearing in the affected ear. Nowadays, we note the increasing use of cartilage as material for the reconstruction of the tympanic membrane. The main objective of our study is to evaluate the influence of size and perforation site on the results of type 1 tympanoplasties performed in our department.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a retrospective study of a series of myringoplasties spread over a period of four

BACKGROUND: About 80% of tympanic membrane tears consequential of middle ear infections or trauma restore spontaneously. Myringoplasty is the procedure to fix the perforation which fails to heal. It is of two types; overlay and underlay techniques. In former technique graft is placed lateral to the fibrous sheet of the tympanic membrane while in underlay technique the graft is placed medial to the tympanic membrane remnant. The published success rates of underlay and overlay myringoplasty varied. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of graft uptake by underlay and overlay tec
