Neurological examination of Pacific harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardii) pups: development and assessment of a protocol.

Stranded Pacific harbor seal (HS, Phoca vitulina richardii) pups admitted to rehabilitation centers have a variety of health problems, including neurological disorders. However, the standard neurological examination protocol for land-based quadrupeds does not suit marine mammals such as seals. In this study we aimed to develop and establish a neurological examination protocol (NEx) for phocid seal pups undergoing rehabilitation. In two consecutive years, we assessed stranded HS pups (n = 45; males n = 21, females n = 24) in care at The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC), Sausalito, California. The dr

Psychological Therapy for Functional Neurological Disorder: Examining Impact on Dissociation, Psychological Distress and General Functioning.

Functional neurological disorder (FND) represents a broad group of motor and sensory clinical symptoms which cannot be explained by other neurological diagnoses. Dissociation is considered a key mechanism in their development and maintenance. Despite psychological therapy being the recommended choice of treatment for FND, evidence for its effectiveness is in its infancy. This study explored the dissociative profile of forty-seven patients with FND and evaluated whether individual psychological therapy improved dissociative symptoms, psychological distress and general functioning among twenty-f

Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome: A systematic review examining genetic, neurological, and neurovascular associations to inform screening.

Axenfeld-Rieger Syndrome (ARS) is comprised of a group of autosomal dominant disorders that are each characterized by anterior segment abnormalities of the eye. Mutations in the transcription factors FOXC1 or PITX2 are the most well-studied genetic manifestations of this syndrome. Due to the rarity this syndrome, ARS-associated neurological manifestations have not been well characterized. The purpose of this systematic review is to characterize and describe ARS neurologic manifestations that affect the cerebral vasculature and their early and late sequelae. PRISMA guidelines were followed; stu

Is the glymphatic system the missing link between sleep impairments and neurological disorders? Examining the implications and uncertainties.

Until recently, both the purpose of the biological need for sleep and the mechanism by which the central nervous system eliminated metabolic waste products were unknown. The glymphatic system is the recently discovered macroscopic waste clearance system for the CNS, which predominantly functions during sleep states. Important implications for the glymphatic system exist for a significant proportion of neurological disorders, including traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, stroke, migraine, and Alzheimer's disease. Within the limited amount of research pertaining to this novel system there exists c

Involuntary Thumb Flexion on Neurological Examination: An Unusual Form of Upper Limb Dystonia in the Faroe Islands.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of dystonia varies worldwide. A prior report suggested a high prevalence of focal dystonia in the Faroese population, possibly reflecting a founder effect. During standardized neurological examination as part of an ongoing neuroepidemiologic study in the Faroe Islands, we noted an unusual phenomenon of thumb flexion during repetitive hand movements in a subset of subjects and sought to define its phenomenology. METHODS: We requested commentary from a panel of dystonia experts regarding the phenomenology of the movements. These experts reviewed the videotaped neurolo

[Methodologic guidelines related to neurologic and neurophysiologic examinations in a population occupationally exposed to carbon disulfide (CS2)].

A range of neurological and neurophysiological examinations of persons chronically exposed to carbon disulfide (CS2), together with appropriate methods were presented. The principles of the subjective and objective examinations of persons suspected to be chronically exposed to CS2 were discussed. A characteristic syndrome of subjective symptoms with their neurasthennic and polyneuropathic nature was highlighted. The usefulness of neurophysiological examinations in the diagnosis of chronic CS2 poisoning, and particularly the value of the brain evoked potentials, were evaluated.

[Etiological analysis of male diabetic erectile dysfunction with particular emphasis on findings of vascular and neurological examinations].

We studied the nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) value obtained by simple method and the vascular and neurological findings closely related to the ability to achieve/maintain an erection in order to investigate the causative factors of organic erectile dysfunction seen in diabetes. Studies were carried out on 62 male diabetics (32-78 y.o.). The results were as follows. 1. There were no cases of a decrease in the nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) value among eight subjects who showed no erectile dysfunction. However, a decrease in the NPT value was recorded in 28 (85%) of 34 subjects who showed

Portable Ultra-Low-Field MRI in Outpatient Neurology: An Examination of Clinical Performance and Patient Experience.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an essential component for outpatient neurological evaluation, though access to timely imaging at the point of care is not feasible for most outpatient neurology practices. Portable ultra-low-field MRI systems offer a potential solution, but studies describing their clinical performance in routine outpatient neurology practice remain limited. This study evaluated clinical concordance and patient experience of portable MRI (pMRI) compared to standard-of-care MRI (sMRI) in independent neurology practices. METHODS: In this prospec

Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination at 3 Months in Infants at Risk for Congenital Infections: A Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: STORCH refers to a group of congenital infections (syphilis, toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus and herpes) that can impact the central nervous system. As clinical signs may not appear until several months or years after birth, the early detection of risk in STORCH-exposed infants has been challenging, and the use of sensitive tools in this population is understudied. OBJECTIVE: To compare STORCH-exposed infants with non-exposed controls using the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) at 3 months of age. METHODS: This is an observational cohort study. A total
