"There is a target on you": Female neurosurgeons' and cardiothoracic surgeons' experiences of overt and covert discrimination in the workplace.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to explore how gender-based discrimination manifests in neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery by interviewing women surgeons in these fields about their lived experiences. METHODS: Interviews were conducted via videoconference with 22 female surgeons (18 neurosurgeons and 4 cardiothoracic surgeons) practicing in academic and community settings in North America. A thematic analysis based on grounded theory principles was used to code the data for major themes. Results encompass inductively derived themes describing experiences of gender discriminatio

Follow up of infants with skull fractures by neurosurgeons due to the risk of growing fractures; is it needed?

INTRODUCTION: Growing skull fractures are a rare complication of paediatric skull fractures. Despite its rarity, a large proportion of resources go towards detecting this complication. This study aims to identify the factors associated with growing skull fracture development to determine which children require follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single-centre retrospective study examining the referral data from all patients under one years old referred with head trauma between 2013 and 2023 (n = 246). Of these patients 189 sustained skull fractures, with two requiring surgery for a g

The Value of White Matter Tractography by Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Altering a Neurosurgeon's Operative Plan.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if the implementation of white matter (WM) fiber tractography by diffusion tensor imaging in presurgical planning for supratentorial tumors proximal to eloquent WM tracts can alter a neurosurgeon's operative strategy. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients with supratentorial brain tumors within eloquent WM tracts who underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography as part of their preoperative assessment. These patients were classified into 3 different DTI groups per the radiology reports: group 1, intact WM tracts; group 2, deviated and/or

Protocols and Results of Resident Neurosurgeon's Transfemoral Catheter Angiography Training Supervised by Neuroendovascular Specialists.

OBJECTIVE: Transfemoral catheter angiography (TFCA) is a basic procedure in neurovascular surgery with increasing importance in surgical and non-invasive treatments. Unfortunately, resident neurosurgeons have relatively few opportunities to perform TFCA in most institutions. We report a method developed in our hospital for training resident neurosurgeons to perform TFCA and evaluate the efficacy of this training. METHODS: From May 2011 to September 2011, a total of 112 consecutive patients underwent TFCA by one resident neurosurgeon supervised by two neuroendovascular specialists. Patients wh

Detection and Management of Tethered Cord in Anorectal Malformation: A Survey of Pediatric Neurosurgeons in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: The reported prevalence of tethered spinal cord in patients with anorectal malformations (ARMs) ranges from 9% to 64%. Practice patterns surrounding the diagnosis and management of tethered cord (TC) are suspected to vary, with consideration to the type of spine imaging, adjunct imaging modalities, what patients are offered surgical intervention, and how patients are followed after detethering. We sought to determine what consensus, if any, exists among pediatric neurosurgeons in the USA in terms of diagnosis and management of TC and, specifically, patients with TC and ARM. METH

A psychoeducational intervention increases use of a delirium protocol by Neurologists and Neurosurgeons in patients with brain disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Over 50% of inpatients with neurological disorders may present with a co-morbid psychiatric illness. Delirium has a reported point prevalence of 20% in hospital inpatients and is frequently undetected. We aimed to (1) examine inpatient referrals to a Liaison Neuropsychiatry service and (2) review the diagnosis and management of delirium before and after an educational intervention. METHODS: An initial 6-month audit of referrals to the inpatient Liaison Neuropsychiatry service was conducted in 2018. We then undertook a psychoeducational intervention to raise awareness of the diagno

Neurosurgeon academic impact is associated with clinical outcomes after clipping of ruptured intracranial aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: Surgeon-dependent factors such as experience and volume are associated with patient outcomes. However, it is unknown whether a surgeon's research productivity could be related to outcomes. The main aim of this study is to investigate the association between the surgeon's academic productivity and clinical outcomes following neurosurgical clipping of ruptured aneurysms. METHODS: We performed a post-hoc analysis of 3567 patients who underwent clipping of ruptured intracranial aneurysms in the randomized trials of tirilazad mesylate from 1990 to 1997. These trials included 162 center
