Corneal enlargement during the first 3 years of life can be a sign of early childhood glaucoma and optic nerve head cupping is a useful confirmatory finding. We report 3 children with corneal enlargement without optic nerve head cupping who had recessive CYP1B1 mutations, the most common identifiable cause of primary congenital glaucoma. One child later developed unilateral Haab striae, still in the absence of optic disk cupping. These cases illustrate that CYP1B1-related corneal changes can occur in young children without visible optic nerve head damage.

We report an atypical case of optic disk drusen (ODD). A 12-year-old girl complained of blurred vision in both eyes. However, visual acuities in both eyes were 20/20. Fundus examination revealed blurring of the optic disk margins and elevation of the optic disk in both eyes. Initially it was considered that the diagnosis would be papilledema. However, neurologic examination revealed no pathology which would cause the visual field defect and disk elevation. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans showed hyperreflectance lesions on the disk and shadowing areas beneath the optic nerve head in bo

Serous retinal detachment, associated with optic disk pit, was diagnosed in 28 eyes of 24 dogs. Xenon arc photocoagulation was used in treatment of the detachment. Of 24 dogs, 21 were Collies. In 23 eyes, retinal detachments affected temporal and/or inferior portions of the retina. In 5 eyes, detachments were predominantly superior and/or nasal. A single photocoagulation treatment resulted in reattachments in 25 eyes. Of the 3 remaining detachments, 2 eyes improved with additional photocoagulation, and 1 eye, which was not treated further, had a complete retinal detachment.

Accurate segmentation of the optic disk (OD) and optic cup (OC) regions of the optic nerve head is a critical step in glaucoma diagnosis. Existing architectures based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) still suffer from insufficient global information and poor generalization ability to small sample datasets. Besides, advanced transformer-based models, although capable of capturing global image features, perform poorly in medical image segmentation due to numerous parameters and insufficient local spatial information. To address the above two problems, we propose an innovative W-shaped hyb

The purpose of the case study was to determine an optimal method for monitoring the condition of the optic nerve disk (OND) and for precising the OND peculiarities in patients with normal pressure glaucoma (NPG). A comparison of the OND calculated parameters obtained for 16 patients (31 eyes), both by the "Rodenstock" scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) and by HRT-II, revealed that the OND parameters calculation preformed by HRT-II was more informative, diversified and automated, which essentially cuts the procedure time. We examined, by HRT-II, a group of 31 patients (61 eyes), comprising pat

PURPOSE: In this study, we aimed to determine the alterations in the retina and peripapillary vascular density in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The patients were divided into two groups regarding their vitamin B12 levels as the low vitamin B12 group (< 200 pg/ml) and the normal vitamin B12 group (≥ 200 pg/ml). The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) and the central macular thickness (CMT) were measured through an SD-OCT analysis. The foveal avascular zone (FAZ), vessel density (VD) of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), and deep capillary plexus (DCP)

Adams-Oliver syndrome (AOS) (MIM 100300) was first described in 1945 as a condition of terminal transverse limb defects and aplasia cutis congenita. Since then, its clinical features have been found to be highly variable and include cardiac defects, abdominal wall defects, vascular malformations, brain abnormalities, and ocular anomalies. We report the case of a 3-year-old girl with AOS who was also found to have bilateral anterior polar cataracts and pseudopapilledema secondary to optic disk drusen. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of bilateral anterior polar cataracts and

PURPOSE: To assess the reproducibility of determining whether an eye has developed optic disk deterioration by the Optic Disc Reading Center (ODRC) in the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS).
DESIGN: Test-retest reproducibility study.
METHODS: Masked, certified graders at the ODRC determine the occurrence of optic disk deterioration in OHTS by comparing baseline with follow-up stereoscopic optic disk photographs. To assess reproducibility, re-gradings were obtained annually by inserting masked "quality control" photographs into the usual ODRC reading stream.
RESULTS: Agreement (kappa

A 43-year-old woman presented with painful visual loss and optic disk edema in the right eye (OD) diagnosed as optic neuritis. Initial non-gadolinium-enhanced fat suppressed cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was normal. Three months later, the disk edema persisted and a gadolinium-enhanced MRI scan of the brain and orbits with fat suppression showed enhancement of the optic nerve OD, most consistent with an optic nerve sheath meningioma. The diagnostic difference between optic neuritis and optic nerve sheath meningioma is discussed.

PURPOSE: Optic nerve pit is a rare congenital anomaly. In two third of the patients, the severity of the disease is increased by the apparition of a serous macular detachment, which may compromise the visual prognosis. The aim of this study is to propose a therapy appropriate to such complication.
METHODS: A prospective study was performed including 10 patients with a serous macular detachment caused by optic nerve pit. All patients underwent intraocular surgery including vitrectomy, peripapillary photocoagulation and intravitreal injection of gas. The mean postoperative follow-up period was

One hundred one eyes of 54 ocular hypertensive patients were studied to determine the value of optic disk evaluation in predicting the presence or absence and the location and type of visual field defects by means of binocular slit-lamp examination and projected 35-mm monocular color slides. We suspected visual field loss erroneously in only one patient, and failed to detect ten (16%) of 61 eyes with field defects. An examiner experienced in slit-lamp evaluation of the optic disk can accurately predict the presence, absence, and location of field defects in most cases by stereoscopic evaluatio

The canonical picture of star formation involves disk-mediated accretion, with Keplerian accretion disks and associated bipolar jets primarily observed in nearby, low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs). Recently, rotating gaseous structures and Keplerian disks have been detected around several massive (M > 8 M⊙) YSOs (MYSOs)1-4, including several disk-jet systems5-7. All the known MYSO systems are in the Milky Way, and all are embedded in their natal material. Here we report the detection of a rotating gaseous structure around an extragalactic MYSO in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The gas motion

BACKGROUND: Every clinician has at one time or another examined a patient who was misdiagnosed as having glaucoma or whose diagnosis of glaucoma was missed. Although glaucoma can exist with normal intraocular pressures, clinicians often rely on the presence of visual-field defects and the degree of optic disk cupping to direct care. However, assessment of cupping is but one small part of optic disk evaluation in glaucoma, and other features of the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer must be closely inspected to help diagnose borderline cases. In addition, glaucoma can exist without
