Aggressive squamous cell carcinoma of the cranium of a dog.

BACKGROUND: The authors report a case of keratinized squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in a 14-year-old dog with extensive cranial bone invasion. To our knowledge, this is the first description of such a case of cranial keratinized SCC with aggressive generalized osteolysis described in a dog. CASE PRESENTATION: The 14-year-old dog was referred for radiological examination with suspicion of head trauma with clinical signs of head deformation, exophthalmos and nasal discharge. The skull radiographs showed a large osteolytic defect of the frontal bone and parietal bone in the region of the external

Solitary Giant Extradural Plasmacytoma.

Solitary plasmacytoma of the skull is very rare, and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. It remains controversial whether solitary plasmacytoma of the skull is essentially identical with solitary plasmacytoma of bone or not. Solitary plasmacytoma of bone including solitary plasmacytoma of the skull is characterized by a radiologically solitary bone lesion, neoplastic plasma cells in the biopsy specimen, fewer than 5% plasma cells in bone marrow, <2.0 g/dl monoclonal protein in the serum when present and negative urine test for Bence Jones protein (monoclonal light chain). Homozygous TREM2 mutation in a family with atypical frontotemporal dementia.

TREM2 mutations were first identified in Nasu-Hakola disease, a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by recurrent fractures because of bone cysts and presenile dementia. Recently, homozygous and compound heterozygous TREM2 mutations were identified in rare families with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) but without bone involvement. We identified a p.Thr66Met heterozygous mutation in a new consanguineous Italian family. Two sibs had early onset autosomal recessive FTLD without severe bone disorders. Atypical signs were present in this family: early parietal and hippocampus inv

The Morphogenesis of Cranial Sutures in Zebrafish.

Using morphological, histological, and TEM analyses of the cranium, we provide a detailed description of bone and suture growth in zebrafish. Based on expression patterns and localization, we identified osteoblasts at different degrees of maturation. Our data confirm that, unlike in humans, zebrafish cranial sutures maintain lifelong patency to sustain skull growth. The cranial vault develops in a coordinated manner resulting in a structure that protects the brain. The zebrafish cranial roof parallels that of higher vertebrates and contains five major bones: one pair of frontal bones, one pair

[Study on renal osteodystrophy using 2-compartment model analysis of bone scintigraphy. 1. Clinical significance of K Index].

The dynamic analyses of bone scintigraphy were performed in 30 cases of hemodialysed patients. The regression analyses between biochemical data or duration and K indexes obtained from the 2-compartment model analysis in the maxillofacial region were carried out. The obtained results were as follows. 1) The duration and K indexes were significantly correlated with 1 or 2% of significance level in the parietal bone and the zygomatic bone. 2) Serum Ca and K indexes were highly correlated in every settled ROI. The correlation coefficients were distributed from 0.58 to 0.79. In the cranial bone the

Experimental and numerical study on the mechanical properties of cortical and spongy cranial bone of 8-week-old porcines at different strain rates.

Pediatric porcines have widely been used as substitute for children in biomechanical research. Previous studies have used entire piglet cranium when testing their properties. Here, the piglet craniums from the frontal and parietal locations were carefully dissected into spongy and cortical part, and tensile tests at different strain rates were then conducted on these two bone types. It is found that the elastic modulus, yield stress, and ultimate stress of the cortical bone were all significantly higher than those of the spongy bone. The ultimate strains of the cortical and spongy bone were si

The influence of pressure upon the fetal head during labour.

In contracted pelvis, moulding of the skull bones is caused by the force of the amniotic fluid pressure and the resistance of the pelvis. In normal labour and abnormal uterine action the moulding of the skull bones is caused by the head to cervix pressure, as has been demonstrated by intra-uterine tokometry. By contrast, in the contracted pelvis there are no mouldings between the two parietal bones. In breech presentation during the first stage of labour the moulding of the skull bones is explained, by the differing resistance of the various skull bones against the amniotic fluid pressure.

Rare giant cell tumour of the left parieto-occipital skull in an 8-year-old female patient: a case report.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a generally benign but locally aggressive neoplasm that most commonly affects the epiphysis of long bones in young adults, while involvement of the cranial bones is exceedingly rare, particularly in the pediatric population. Calvarial GCTs pose significant diagnostic challenges because their clinical and radiologic features overlap with other lytic skull lesions. We report a rare case of a pediatric giant cell tumor arising from the calvarium that presented with progressive scalp swelling and localized pain. Radiologic evaluation demonstrated an expansile oste

Expression of SPARC/osteonectin transcript in murine embryos and gonads.

A cDNA clone, p2-4, was isolated from mouse teratocarcinoma-derived parietal endoderm-like cells and used to analyze expression of the corresponding transcript during mouse embryogenesis. Nucleotide-sequence analysis revealed extensive homology between this clone and SPARC/osteonectin cDNA cloned from mouse parietal endoderm and bovine bone cells. The SPARC/osteonectin transcript became more abundant when embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells differentiated into parietal endoderm-like cells. In embryos, the transcript began to appear in the embryo proper on day 11 and continued to be expressed throug

Parietal pseudofracture and spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage suggesting nonaccidental trauma: report of 2 cases.

Massive intracranial hemorrhage, no history of trauma and radiographic findings that were initially interpreted as linear parietal fractures raised the possibility of nonaccidental trauma in 2 infants. Both had severe coagulopathy, 1 due to hemorrhagic disease of the newborn (vitamin K deficiency) and the other due to disseminated herpes simplex virus infection. Both infants died. At autopsy, the parietal bone abnormalities were not fractures, but proved to be an anomalous suture in 1 and a connective tissue fissure in the other.

Stability of standardized uptake values for quantitative bone SPECT for jawbone lesions: a single-center cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The long time required for bone uptake of radiopharmaceutical material after injection for bone scintigraphy is a burden for patients with poor health. Thus, to assess whether the uptake time could be reduced for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of the jawbone, this study evaluated differences in maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) within patients using SPECT imaging at 2 and 3 hours after radiopharmaceutical injection. METHODS: A total of 33 patients undergoing treatment or in post-treatment follow-up for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, who

Does dexmedetomidine induce bone regeneration in cranial defects in rabbits?

Dexmedetomidine has been shown to exert protective and curative effects on various tissues and organs in different pathological processes. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine on the regeneration process after making holes in the parietal bones of rabbits. Twenty-four male Oryctolagus cuniculus rabbits were allocated to three groups, and an 8-mm circular parietal critical-sized bone defect was induced in each animal. Group_C (control) received saline; Group_LD (low dose) was given dexmedetomidine 2.75 µg/kg; Group_HD (high dose), dexmedetomidine 5.5 µg/kg; all were adm

Normal childhood developmental patterns in skull bone marrow by MR imaging.

To establish the normal developmental pattern of skull bone marrow in children by MR imaging, sagittal T1-weighted MR skull images of 324 normal children (newborn to 18 years) were reviewed. Bone marrow intensity was assigned four gradations as compared with that of muscle and fat on the same image. Bone marrow became isointense with fat (yellow marrow) at a mean age +/- S.E.M. (in years) of 8.5 +/- 0.24 in sphenoid, 9.1 +/- 0.29 in mandible, 9.3 +/- 0.28 in hard palate, 9.7 +/- 0.26 in frontal, 11.0 +/- 0.26 in squamous occiput, 11.5 +/- 0.28 in parietal, and 11.9 +/- 0.24 in basiocciput. Activation of AGEs-RAGE axis impairs bone repair in a metabolic syndrome model.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a heterogeneous and multifactorial disorder associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Preclinical and clinical studies have reported a negative correlation between MetS and bone tissue integrity and repair; however, a consensus remains elusive, likely due to the variability observed among individuals with MetS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Young male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 5). One group received 20% fructose in their drinking water, while the control group received water alone, for three months. One month

Average thickness of the bones of the human neurocranium: development of reference measurements to assist with blunt force trauma interpretations.

The accurate interpretation of a blunt force head injury relies on an understanding of the case circumstances (extrinsic variables) and anatomical details of the individual (intrinsic variables). Whilst it is often possible to account for many of these variables, the intrinsic variable of neurocranial thickness is difficult to account for as data for what constitutes 'normal' thickness is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of age, sex and ancestry on neurocranial thickness, and develop reference ranges for average neurocranial thickness in the context of those biolog

Immediate Implant Placement in Conjunction with Maxillary Sinus Lifting and Grafting.

Bone deficiency in the posterior maxillary bone can be associated with a large sinus cavity and this dilemma can limit implant placement for dental rehabilitation in this area. The maxillary sinus lifting technique can be the solution for many clinical situations with minimal bone height, allowing the placement of longer implants. Autogenous bone graft is a safe and reliable material for reconstructive surgery. In this article, a case of an elderly male patient with inadequate maxillary bone height is presented. Simultaneous maxillary sinus elevation and implant placement with autogenous parie

[Congenital cutaneous aplasia of the scalp. Apropos of 4 cases].

Report of four cases of congenital defects of the scalp. In two of these cases, the skin defect was associated with a skull defect and in one, there were other cranial deformities. In each case, the lesion seemed isolated in otherwise normal children. This study contains a review of congenital scalp defects. The different aspects of this rare disease are presented and the treatment is discussed with reference to natural evolution. The authors differentiate between cases with isolated lesion and cases with associated malformations or abnormalities, malformation syndromes, as has been previously
