The Hemopump as a left ventricular assist device in pediatric applications: initial Canadian applications.

Three children aged 11 months, and eight and nine years were supported with a Hemopump as a potentially life saving measure for circulatory failure. Left ventricular assist time ranged from 10 to 32 h. None of the three patients could be successfully weaned from the device because of complications of bleeding, arrhythmia or neurological insult. Despite poor outcomes, each patient demonstrated important hemodynamic stabilization with the device. The Hemopump is suggested as a potentially life saving treatment modality for selected pediatric patients who have critical left ventricular failure.

Feasibility and Concurrent Validity of the Family-Assisted Severe Illness Therapy Tool Compared With Pediatric Early Warning Systems in Pediatric Oncology.

PURPOSE: Children with cancer in low- and middle-income countries face high preventable in-hospital mortality, often because of delayed recognition of clinical deterioration. Pediatric Early Warning Systems (PEWS) enable early detection but require frequent clinician assessments that are difficult to sustain in resource-constrained settings. The Family-Assisted Severe Illness Therapy (FASTER) tool trains caregivers to perform simple bedside assessments as an alternative screening approach. We evaluated the concurrent validity, feasibility, and acceptability of caregiver-recorded FASTER scores

ASSIST: Refinement of a Benefits Navigator Intervention Among Low-Income Pediatric Oncology Families.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Children with cancer living in poverty experience worse survival and quality of life. Interventions connecting low-income families to benefits (e.g., Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP] improve health outcomes; yet nearly 50% of SNAP-eligible pediatric oncology families are unenrolled. We developed ASSIST (Assisted Benefits Navigation Support) to connect pediatric oncology families to SNAP, the Special Supplemental Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) via benefits navigation. METHODS: This was a single-cent

Endoscopic ultrasonic aspirator-assisted resection for pediatric hypothalamic hamartomas: outcomes and technical nuances.

BACKGROUND: Hypothalamic hamartomas (HHs) are rare developmental lesions frequently associated with drug-resistant epilepsy. Multiple surgical techniques have been described, but the optimal strategy remains controversial. Endoscopic approaches have emerged as minimally invasive options, yet technical limitations persist, particularly in larger or firm lesions. This article aims to describe the technical nuances, safety, and clinical outcomes of endoscopic resection of pediatric HHs assisted by a neuroendoscopic ultrasonic aspirator (NUA). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 21 pediatric pat

Left ventricular assist device temporary explantation as a strategy for infection control in a pediatric patient.

We report a case of temporary Berlin Heart EXCOR® explantation in a pediatric patient with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy who suffered an uncontrollable inflow cannulation site infection while on bridge-to-transplantation. Despite failure to thrive and catheter-related infections, once free of the device, the patient was cured of infection using systemic antibiotics and surgical debridement. The patient underwent EXCOR® reimplantation after four months, and is awaiting heart transplantation in stable condition. A life-threatening ventricular assist device-related infection may require devic

Cost-effectiveness analysis of robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery for complex pediatric surgical conditions.

BACKGROUND: Robotics has been used safely and successfully in a variety of adult surgeries and is gradually gaining ground in pediatrics. While the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery in disease treatment are well recognized, its high cost has led to questions. To investigate whether robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) is cost-effective compared to conventional laparoscopic surgery (LS) in pediatric surgery, we attempted to construct a model to perform an analysis of these two surgical approaches using Python statistical analysis software. METHODS: We selected four common complex pe
