Counselling customers at risk of the triple whammy effect at community pharmacies - A feasibility study.

The combination of diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-i)/angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) involves a risk of acute renal failure known as the triple whammy effect (TWE). NSAID can be provided by prescription or over the counter (OTC) and community pharmacies counsel on this medication every day to contribute to medication safety. The objective of this study is to test the feasibility of an intervention where community pharmacies identify and counsel customers at risk of the TWE. Participating pharmacies were recruit

Patient perspectives on a proposed pharmacy-based colorectal cancer screening program.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common and preventable cancer. CRC screening is underutilized, particularly within medically underserved communities. Most interventions aimed at increasing CRC screening are delivered through primary care clinics. Pharmacies are more accessible than traditional primary care settings and may be ideally suited for delivering CRC screening and increasing access. Fecal immunochemical test is an at-home, stool-based CRC screening test that could be distributed through pharmacies. The purpose of our study was to assess patient perspectives on receiving fecal immunochemi

Expedited Partner Therapy: Pharmacist Refusal of Legal Prescriptions.

BACKGROUND: Expedited partner therapy (EPT) is an effective strategy for partner management of sexually transmitted infections. Some states, including Wisconsin, allow EPT prescriptions to be filled without a patient name. This study determined the refusal rates of nameless EPT prescriptions in Milwaukee pharmacies. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 3 trained research assistants of different age, sex, and race posed as "patients" and visited 50 pharmacy locations from one pharmacy chain in Milwaukee County, WI, to fill nameless EPT prescriptions. A χ test was used to compare demographic

Missed Opportunities in Engaging Community Pharmacies for Integrated Tuberculosis Care in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Call to Action.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Community pharmacies, which are often the first point of contact for people with TB, are underutilized in expanding TB care. Engaging community pharmacies in TB care could facilitate personalized adherence counseling, the timely detection and reporting of medication side effects, and the integration of TB and HIV services for individuals with both TB and HIV. Pharmacies can reduce stigma and address social and psychological barriers by offering person-centered care in convenient, accessible settings, in

An Exploration of Access to Tobacco Cessation Services Through Pharmacies in a Medically Underserved Area in California: Accuracy of Telephone Information Regarding Pharmacist-Furnished NRT.

BACKGROUND: Residents of California's San Joaquin Valley (SJV) have limited access to physicians and high rates of tobacco use. To address this issue, the state permits pharmacists to independently prescribe nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Rural residents seeking information about such services may depend on telephoning pharmacies; this case study sought to determine whether information received by phone accurately aligned with information relayed in person. METHODS: We collected data on pharmacist prescribing in a rural, low-resource California region in 3 stages: (1) all corporate and i

Evaluation of antibiotics returned for safe disposal during and after a community pharmacy antibiotic amnesty campaign.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies in England offer convenient and safe disposal of unwanted medicines, including antimicrobials, and better uptake of this service could limit environmental antimicrobial resistance. However, there is limited information on the extent and nature of antibiotic returns to community pharmacies. The impact of an antibiotic amnesty campaign promoting antibiotic disposal through community pharmacies was evaluated with the intention of collecting detailed information on the antibiotics returned. METHODS: An antibiotic amnesty campaign was delivered by community pharmac

An Integrative Review of Micro-Credentials and Digital Badges for Pharmacy Educators.

Micro-credentials (MCs) and digital badges (DBs) have gained popularity in recent years as a means to supplement traditional degrees and certifications. MCs and DBs can play a significant role in supporting student-centered learning by offering personalized and flexible learning pathways, emphasizing real-world relevance and practical skills, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. However, barriers currently exist within health professions education, including pharmacy education, that could limit the full adoption and implementation of MCs and DBs. Research on the use of MC

Preparing for pharmacy-based delivery of long-acting injectable antiretrovirals: a pre-implementation study.

BACKGROUND: Use of long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (LA-ART) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment and prevention is increasing, but there are challenges that could limit broad expansion of these important treatments. The goal of this study was to explore attitudes, barriers, and facilitators for implementing LA-ART administration within community pharmacies. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study focusing on pre-implementation aspects of community pharmacy-administered LA-ART. Pharmacists, clinic staff members, and persons with HIV completed a baseline survey foll

Patient perspectives on community pharmacy administered and dispensing of methadone treatment for opioid use disorder: a qualitative study in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacy administration and dispensing of methadone treatment for opioid use disorder (PADMOUD) may address inadequate capability of opioid treatment programs (OTPs) in the US by expanding access to methadone at community pharmacies nationally. PADMOUD is vastly underutilized in the US. There is no published US study on OUD patients' perspectives on PADMOUD. Data are timely and needed to inform the implementation of PADMOUD in the US to address its serious opioid overdose crisis. METHODS: Patient participants of the first completed US trial on PADMOUD through electronic prescribin

Over-the-counter antimicrobial dispensing in Lusaka Province retail pharmacies, Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global threat, projected to cause 10 million deaths annually by 2050, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. Indiscriminate dispensing and policy non-adherence worsen AMR, yet non-prescription antimicrobial use persists. This study examines over-the-counter (OTC) antimicrobial dispensing by pharmacy personnel in Lusaka Province, Zambia. OBJECTIVE: To describe OTC antimicrobial dispensing by retail pharmacy personnel in Lusaka Province and its implications for AMR. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey using simulated clients at 142 retail

Impact of Internet pharmacy regulation on opioid analgesic availability.

OBJECTIVE: Access to prescription opioid analgesics has made Internet pharmacies the object of increased regulatory scrutiny, but the effectiveness of regulatory changes in curtailing availability of opioid analgesics from online sources has been not assessed. As part of an ongoing investigation into the relationship between the Internet and substance abuse, we examined the availability of prescription opioid analgesics from online pharmacies. METHOD: From a pharmacy watch Web site, we constructed a data set of postings entered every 3 months beginning November 1, 2005, that were related to t

Integration of Pharmacy Student Interns into a Naloxone Telephone Outreach Service.

Opioid overdose remains a significant public health issue in the United States and is the leading cause of accidental death. Naloxone has become increasingly accessible, with greater emphasis placed by health systems and pharmacies on distribution of the safety tool. While the utility of pharmacists in advancing this work is clear, there is limited research on the success of integrating pharmacy students into a naloxone outreach program. The purpose of this project was to implement and evaluate the success of integrating pharmacy student interns into a naloxone telephone outreach service for V

[Sertürner and morphine--a historical vignette].

Friedrich Wilhelm Sertürner was born near Paderborn in 1783. At the age of twenty he passed examinations as a pharmacist's assistant in Paderborn. In a letter to the editor of Trommsdorffs Journal der Pharmacie Vol 13 (1805) he reported on the isolation of a substance from opium which showed alkaline character and was later called by him "morphine". In 1806, Sertürner moved to Einbeck where he first worked as assistant to the tenant of the magistrate's pharmacy. In 1809, he became pharmacist and, since the tenant was already 75 years old, he intended to take charge of the pharmacy. However,he

Trends in vaccination in pharmacy and medical settings among Medicaid recipients in the United States, 2018-2023: a claims analysis.

BACKGROUND: Medicaid beneficiaries typically have low vaccination rates, in part due to limited access. Pharmacies provide easy-to-access locations for vaccination. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of trends in pharmacy-based vaccination by age and race or ethnicity among Medicaid recipients aged ≥9 from 1 January 2018 (before the COVID-19 pandemic) to 31 December 2023. The percentage of all vaccinations administered at pharmacies and the overall percentage change in vaccination rates were determined. RESULTS: With some exceptions, overall routine and seasonal v

Qualitative Investigation of Community Pharmacy Immunization Enhancement Program Implementation.

Background: Despite widely available nonseasonal immunization services in community pharmacies, actual pharmacist-administered vaccines are not yet optimal. A flexible choice multicomponent intervention, the "We Immunize" program, was implemented in Alabama and California community pharmacies, with the goal to enhance pneumococcal and zoster immunization delivery. Limited research has been done to qualitatively understand factors influencing immunization service expansion. Objective: Explore pharmacist perceptions of the We Immunize program in terms of its acceptability, impact, and real-world

Healthcare Professional Students' Perspectives on Substance Use Disorders and Stigma: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Access to and quality of care for Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) remain a major public health issue. Stigma associated with SUDs contributes to the gap between the number of patients who need treatment and the much smaller fraction that receive it. Healthcare professional students are future care providers; an opportunity exists to characterize their collective perspectives on patients with SUDs and how that informs the care they provide. METHODS: Healthcare professional students participated in online, semi-structured focus group (FGs) between March and April 2021. The FGs were c
