BACKGROUND: The liver plays an essential role in the body by regulating several important metabolic functions. Liver injury is associated with the distortion of these functions causing many health problems. Pharmaceutical drugs treat liver disorders but cause further damage to it. Hence, herbal drugs are used worldwide and are becoming increasingly popular.
METHODS: The hepatoprotective activity of Phyllanthus niruri (PN) was evaluated against liver cirrhosis induced by thioacetamide (TAA) in male Sprague Dawley rats. Rats received intraperitoneal injections of thioacetamide (TAA, 200 mg/kg,

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the ethyl acetate fraction of amla (EAFA) extract on valproic acid (VPA)-induced postnatal autism in BALB/c mice. Our study revealed that mice treated with VPA on postnatal day 14 (PND14) showed significant abnormal behaviours such as social interaction, social affiliation, anxiety, and motor coordination compared to the control group, while EAFA extract treatment (100 mg/kg) ameliorated these symptoms. Our study highlights the protective effect of EAFA extract on improving behavioural alterations, significantly restoring anti-oxidativ

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging arbovirus that in recent years has been associated with cases of severe neurological disorders, such as microcephaly in newborns and Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. As there is no vaccine or treatment, the search for new therapeutic targets is of great relevance. In this sense, plants are extremely rich sources for the discovery of new bioactive compounds and the species Phyllanthus brasiliensis (native to the Amazon region) remains unexplored.
PURPOSE: To investigate the potential antiviral activity of compounds isolated from P. brasiliensis le

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the major global health issues, strongly correlated with insulin resistance, obesity and oxidative stress. The current study aimed to evaluate anti-NAFLD effects of three different extracts of Phyllanthus niruri (P. niruri). NAFLD was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats using a special high-fat diet (HFD). A 50% methanolic extract (50% ME) exhibited the highest inhibitory effect against NAFLD progression. It significantly reduced hepatomegaly (16%) and visceral fat weight (22%), decreased NAFLD score, prevented fibrosis, and reduced serum tot

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Leaves of Phyllanthus acidus (PA) have been used in Thai traditional medicine for the treatment of hypertension. We have previously shown that chronic treatment of a PA water extract to middle-aged male rats caused a lowering of the body and serum lipids, two of the parameters that are implicated in cardiovascular disease.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate if chronic treatment of middle-aged male rats with a PA water extract affected the perivascular (aortic) adipose tissue (PVAT) and/or their vascular functions
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fresh leaves of PA were ex

The polarization of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) from M2 to M1 phenotype is an effective strategy for tumor immunotherapy. In this study, a pectic polysaccharide (PEP-1) was isolated from Phyllanthus emblica fruits via hot water extraction, ethanol precipitation, and purified by anion exchange and gel permeation chromatography. PEP-1 was identified as a homogalacturonan (molecular weight, 156.8 kDa) via characterization analysis. The structural attributes of PEP-1 were elucidated through GC-MS and NMR analyses, confirming that its repeating sugar units consist of GalA connected by α-1,4

Phyllanthus muellerianus (Kuntze) Excell (family Euphorbiaceae) stem bark methanol extract inhibited the growth of Clostridium sporogenes and Streptococcus pyogenes, responsible for gas gangrene and suppurative and non suppurative diseases, respectively. After the HPLC fingerprint acquisition a bioguided fractionation of the defatted methanol extract allowed the isolation of six fractions whose activity was evaluated against the two pathogen bacteria. A further purification of the most active fraction afforded a pure compound responsible for the very interesting inhibitory activity against C.

This study investigated the therapeutic effects of PEP-2, a 348.45 kDa pectin isolated from Phyllanthus emblica, against metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Characterized as a homogalacturonan with minor rhamnogalacturonan I, PEP-2 consists of galacturonic acid, galactose, rhamnose, and arabinose. In high-fat diet-induced mice, PEP-2 significantly improved metabolic phenotypes, reducing obesity, insulin resistance, and hepatic steatosis. Mechanistically, PEP-2 modulated the gut-liver axis by enriching Akkermansia and enhancing short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production. These chang

The leaves of Phyllanthus niruri L. are used in folk medicine in many countries to treat various diseases. However, despite the enormous therapeutic potential, use of the plant is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Reports on the impacts of exposure to this plant on the development of the offspring of rats are still scarce and controversial. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of the administration of P. niruri aqueous extract, during pregnancy and lactation, on maternal toxicity, on postnatal physical development, and on behavioral aspects in adult male offspring
