Transgenic plants expressing the AaIT/GNA fusion protein show increased resistance and toxicity to both chewing and sucking pests.

The adoption of pest-resistant transgenic plants to reduce yield losses and decrease pesticide use has been successful. To achieve the goal of controlling both chewing and sucking pests in a given transgenic plant, we generated transgenic tobacco, Arabidopsis, and rice plants expressing the fusion protein, AaIT/GNA, in which an insecticidal scorpion venom neurotoxin (Androctonus australis toxin, AaIT) is fused to snowdrop lectin (Galanthus nivalis agglutinin, GNA). Compared with transgenic tobacco and Arabidopsis plants expressing AaIT or GNA, transgenic plants expressing AaIT/GNA exhibited in

Development of an automated water toxicity biosensor using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans for monitoring cyanides in natural water for a water filtering plant.

An on-line biosensor consisting of immobilized Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and an oxygen electrode was developed for automated monitoring of acute toxicity in water samples. T. ferrooxidans is an obligatory acidophilic, autotrophic bacterium and derives its energy by the oxidation of ferrous ion, elemental sulfur, and reduced sulfur compounds including metal sulfides. The assay is based on the monitoring of a current increase by addition of toxicoids, which is caused by the inhibition of bacterial respiration and decrease in oxygen consumption. Optimum cell number on the membrane was 5.0 x 10(8)

Effect of an insecticide, fungicide and plant growth regulator and their mixture on the survival of the springtail Folsomia candida and the potential reduction of toxicity by vitamins.

A pesticide-free model soil was pretreated with field-realistic doses/applications of the insecticide, Biscaya 240 OD; the fungicide Tilmor; the growth regulator, Atonik and their mixture. Because Folsomia candida is eyeless, unpigmented, avoids light, and prefers dark, wet and cold conditions, we grew and tested it in the dark and at 18°C. Survival of springtails added to soil at 50 % moisture was assessed after 28 days. The experiments were repeated three times in order to confirm the validity of the test and results. The mixture decreased the survival most significantly. Bayesian statistics

Innovative auxin-micronutrient based nanocomposites (IAA-Fe2O3NPs and IAA-Mn2O3NPs) shield strawberry plants from lead toxicity.

Smart nanohybrid technology with potential advantages to plants has recently been developed formanaging the widespread pollution of heavy metals. Herein, we disclose a novel strategy to combat Pb stress in strawberry (Fragaria spp. cv. Fertona) through a newly designed nano-based system that conjugates indole acetic acid (IAA) with nanoparticles (NPs) of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) micronutrients, forming IAA-Mn2O3NPs (IAA-MnNPs) and IAA-Fe2O3NPs (IAA-FeNPs) nanocomposites and illuminates the underlying mechanisms involved. NPs were synthesized, yielding cubic Mn2O3 NPs (50 nm) and spheric Fe

Phytotoxicity of environmental norfloxacin concentrations on the aquatic plant Spirodela polyrrhiza: Evaluation of growth parameters, photosynthetic toxicity and biochemical traits.

As an emerging pollutant, the increasing use of antibiotics in wastewater posed a serious threat to non-target organisms in the environment. Duckweed (Spirodela polyrrhiza) is a common higher aquatic plant broadly used in phytotoxicity tests for xenobiotic substances. The aim of this study was to evaluate the chronic toxicity of norfloxacin (NOR) on Spirodela polyrrhiza during 18 days of exposure. Our study investigated the addition of NOR into the medium with environment-related concentrations (0, 0.1, 10, and 1000 μg L-1). Subsequently, biomarkers of toxicity such as growth, pigment, chlorop

Antioxidant properties of the Lebanese plant Iris x germanica L. crude extracts and antagonism of chlorpromazine toxicity on Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Iris x germanica L., which belongs to the Iridaceae family, has been reported in the literature for its antioxidant properties in acellular chemical-antioxidant assays. Chlorpromazine (CPZ) is an antipsychotic drug known to cause adverse reactions in humans. Oxidative stress is among the main mechanisms by which CPZ exerts its toxicity in animal cell models as well as in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study we investigated the protective effects of I. germanica L. crude extracts against CPZ toxicity. We demonstrated that methanolic extracts from rhizome (R-M), leaf (L-M) and flowe

The plant Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville as a neutralizing source against some toxic activities of Bothrops jararacussu snake venom.

Snakebites produce several toxic effects in victims, such as hemorrhage, tissue necrosis, hemostatic, renal, or cardiotoxic alterations, inflammation, and death. To counteract these symptoms, antivenom is the official treatment. Although such therapy prevents death, it does not efficiently neutralize necrosis or other local effects, leading to amputation or morbidities of the affected limb. Therefore, the search for better and more efficient therapies deserves attention; further, plants have been used to ameliorate a number of diseases and medical conditions, including snakebites, for many yea

Hydrogen sulphide partly involves in thiamine-induced tolerance to cadmium toxicity in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch) plants.

Although thiamine (THI) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) both have widely been tested in the plant under stress conditions, cross talk between THI and H2S in the acquisition of cadmium (Cd) stress tolerance needs to be studied. So, an experiment was designed to study the participation of endogenous H2S in THI-induced tolerance to Cd stress in strawberry plants. A foliar spray solution containing THI (50 mg L-1) was sprayed once a week for 4 weeks to the foliage of strawberry plants under Cd stress (1.0 mM CdCl2). The plant dry weight, total chlorophyll, maximum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), leaf pota

Healing potential of Adiantum capillus-veneris L. plant extract on bisphenol A-induced hepatic toxicity in male albino rats.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely used environmental pollutant in the production of plastics but causes hepatotoxicity in mammals. In the present study, we studied the BPA-induced oxidative stress in rats and ameliorative potential of Adiantum capillus-veneris L. plant. It was concluded that the BPA can reduce the body and liver weight, increase in biochemical levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin, and disturb the normal hepatic physiology, histology, and metabolism. Additionally, liver histology shows hepatic necrosis, congestion, and vacuo

Toxicity of copper hydroxide nanoparticles, bulk copper hydroxide, and ionic copper to alfalfa plants: A spectroscopic and gene expression study.

Bulk Cu compounds such as Cu(OH)2 are extensively used as pesticides in agriculture. Recent investigations suggest that Cu-based nanomaterials can replace bulk materials reducing the environmental impacts of Cu. In this study, stress responses of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seedlings to Cu(OH)2 nanoparticle or compounds were evaluated. Seeds were immersed in suspension/solutions of a Cu(OH)2 nanoform, bulk Cu(OH)2, CuSO4, and Cu(NO3)2 at 25 and 75 mg/L. Six days later, the germination, seedling growth, and the physiological and biochemical responses of sprouts were evaluated. All Cu treatment

Comparative investigation of toxicity and bioaccumulation of Cd-based quantum dots and Cd salt in freshwater plant Lemna minor L.

The purpose of this study was to determine the toxicity of two different sources of cadmium, i.e. CdCl2 and Cd-based Quantum Dots (QDs), for freshwater model plant Lemna minor L. Cadmium telluride QDs were capped with two coating ligands: glutathione (GSH) or 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA). Growth rate inhibition and final biomass inhibition of L. minor after 168-h exposure were monitored as toxicity endpoints. Dose-response curves for Cd toxicity and EC50168h values were statistically evaluated for all sources of Cd to uncover possible differences among the toxicities of tested compounds. Tot
